3948. The Guess Who - Flying on the Ground is Wrong

Image
From: This Time Long Ago ; Year: 2001 (1967); Genre: Pop/Rock Learned of this song's existence the other day, which with me being a pretty big Guess Who fan is a fairly interesting, but since it was a single never made it to a proper album and they were still known a "The Guess Who?" at the time it's not surprising. Anyway, this one is a little lighter and poppier than wot most would think of coming from the band, but it's still a neat piece of history from the band. Hear Flying on the Ground is Wrong on YouTube. Image
From: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock/Glam Rock Drew a blank again today and decided to pick the last song playing in my mind. I've actually always loved Bennie and the Jets ever since I can remember. 3933. The Moody Blues - I Know You're Out There Somewhere

Image
From: Sur La Mer ; Year: 1988; Genre: Rock/Synthpop For some reason I had this song on my mind yesterday; I absolutely thought I had chosen it already, but to my surprise I had not. I know I've mentioned it before, but The Moody Blues were my "gateway drug" so to speak into progressive rock. This and other ones of the era were the songs that got my into the band in the first place; once I dug through their back catalogue I ended up buying a lot of their records. And from there I looked into similar groups and immediately fell in love with the genre. Anyway, I Know You're Out There Somewhere has an upbeat yet urgent feeling about it, especially in the lyrics. The keyboards are the main draw for me along with the rhythm section. Hear I Know You're Out There Somewhere on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstrong - Money Blues My song pick two years ago today: Weather Report - Palladíum My song pick three years

Image
From: Phase Two ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk/Comedy Thought I'd do another Funky Friday pick today; had a couple in mind, but the late-great Jimmy Castor and his band have been on my mind off and on for the last month or so. Image
From: Blood Mountain ; Year: 2006; Genre: Sludge Metal/Progressive Metal Here's a good one to get your blood moving; the opening track off of Mastodon's Blood Mountain album, which still is my favourite of theirs. 3927. Depeche Mode - Strangelove

Image
From: Music for the Masses ; Year: 1987; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop Strangelove is one that anybody who was around in the 1980s should immediately recognize; it was a decently big hit single. It's always fun to go back and revisit some great song from years past; it's hard to believe that it's over 30 years since its release, but it has aged exceptionally well. 3920. Elvis Costello - Alison

Image
From: My Aim is True ; Year: 1977; Genre: Soft Rock/New Wave/Pop I've noticed that in past years for some reason in the month of April I have a tendency to pick songs from bands I had not chosen a song from prior. Well, I figured that I would do so again, with this light ballad from Elvis Costello. For being a song that contains a lot of pop/rock "zeitgeists" of the late '70s era it has some excellent music and ideas thrown in; especially that bass. Hear Alison on YouTube.
