6872. The Allman Brothers Band - Don't Keep Me Wonderin'

Image
From: Idlewild South ; Year: 1970; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock Recently, I read an insightful interview with the only surviving member of this historic band: Jai Johanny Johanson, or Jaimoe . He was one of the two amazing drummers/percussionists, (the other being Butch Trucks ), for the band throughout their most prosperous times and has appeared on the majority of their albums. I have to say that I still to this day love watching those two masters in the live recordings; almost like drumming professors putting on a clinic. Amongst a few neat things and anecdotes I learned was that each member had a tattoo of a psychedelic mushroom as kind of brotherhood bond and that he was proud to have the last one on his leg. It is still difficult for me to acknowledge that so many have passed on; they themselves were and are like monuments to American music. Anyway, I thought that I would revisit one of my favourite records; like most of their artistry, Idlewild South is best played all at on...

6790. Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around and Fell In Love

Image
From: Struttin' My Stuff ; Year: 1975; Genre: Southern Rock Kind of surprised that I had not yet chosen something from Elvin Bishop yet; especially this song, which is probably one of his most famous. Basically, if you have a movie or TV show depicting the 1970s this is one of the "go-to" tracks to play in the background, as such has been used for just that on many occasions.     Hear Fooled Around and Fell In Love on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Funkadelic - I Got a Thing, You Got a Thing, Everybody's Got a Thing     My song pick 2 years ago today: Boyz II Men - In the Still of the Night (I'll Remember)   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - One Rainy Wish   My song pick 4 years ago today: April Wine - Cat's Claw   My song pick 5 years ago today: Alphaville - Big In Japan   My song pick 6 years ago today: Primus - Mary the Ice Cube   My song pick 7 years ago today: Masto...

Image
From: Midnight Wind ; Year: 1977; Genre: Southern Rock Every now and then I will sit back and partake in music from the late-great Charlie Daniels and his band. 6503. .38 Special - Robin Hood

Image
From: Rockin' Into the Night ; Year: 1979; Genre: Southern Rock The best aspect of this instrumental is how the twin lead guitars play off one another with that rather bouncy rhythm that evokes a slight medieval flavour.     Hear Robin Hood on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Big Audio Dynamite II - The Globe     My song pick 2 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - See You In Black   My song pick 3 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Your Love   My song pick 4 years ago today: Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ennio Morricone - The Ecstasy of Gold   My song pick 6 years ago today: Rush - Clockwork Angels My song pick 7 years ago today: The Kinks - Living on a Thin Line My song pick 8 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Slow Marching Band My song pick 9 years ago today: Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - Flight of the Cosmic Hippo My song pick ...

6414. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Ain't No Good Life

Image
From: Street Survivors ; Year: 1977; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock As far as I am aware, this is the only song that Steve Gaines sung solo lead vocals on. It really is a shame that he was taken so young; he showed an amazing and quickly evolving virtuosity.   Hear Ain't No Good Life on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Johnny Rivers - Secret Agent Man   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - Resist   My song pick 3 years ago today: Heart - The Oldest Story in the World   My song pick 4 years ago today: Cream - Sitting on Top of the World   My song pick 5 years ago today: Van Der Graaf Generator - Forever Falling   My song pick 6 years ago today: Genesis - Behind the Lines My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - Emotion Detector My song pick 8 years ago today: Al Di Meola - The Wizard My song pick 9 years ago today: Rhapsody of Fire - Dark Wings of Steel My song pick 10 years ago today: Parliament - Flash Light My ...

6346. Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band - Blue on Black

Image
From: Trouble Is... ; Year: 1997; Genre: Blues Rock/Southern Rock Yet another song popped into me mind that I had not heard in well over a decade. At first I thought it was a .38 Special song, but I was wrong; I can really hear a similarity, but that is more than likely how much of southern rock traces itself to The Allman Brothers Band and, of course the many, many top blues performers from there before. You can definitely hear the influence of the Allman Brothers, but also quite a bit of the early 1990s alternative rock/grunge sound as well.   Hear Blue on Black on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - They Don't See You   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bon Jovi - Hardest Part is the Night   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rainbow - Fire Dance   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Marvelettes - Beechwood 4-5789 My song pick 5 years ago today: The Who - Don't Let Go The Coat My song pick 6 years ago today: Black Sa...

6265. Molly Hatchet - Jukin' City

Image
From: Flirtin' With Disaster ; Year: 1979; Genre: Southern Rock Had this track on my mind since yesterday. I remember when I used to play the 8-Track album of Flirtin' With Disaster this track was part of my "path" of songs through the four main stereo tracks. While it was never one that I particularly liked, I eventually came around to enjoy it all the more. Without a single doubt, the music, especially the guitar solos are my favourite part of it.   Hear Jukin' City on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Bangles - Manic Monday   My song pick 2 years ago today: Wolfmother - Colossal   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Moody Blues - The Spirit   My song pick 4 years ago today: Fatback Band - (Do The) Spanish Hustle   My song pick 5 years ago today: Fairport Convention - Reynardine   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Kinks - Introduction to a Solution My song pick 7 years ago today: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - M...

6053. Metallica - Tuesday's Gone

Image
From: Garage Inc. ; Year: 1998; Genre: Southern Rock I can remember when this album full of covers was released; it seemed as if a lot of bands and solo artists were making these all around that time. Anyway, this is a cover of the popular mainstay southern rock track from Lynyrd Skynyrd that not only features Metallica, but Skynyrd band member Gary Rossington, as well as Jerry Cantrell, Pepper Keenan, Sean Kinney, John Popper, Les Claypool, and Jim Martin.   Hear Tuesday's Gone on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody   My song pick 2 years ago today: Pallas - Midas Touch   My song pick 3 years ago today: Queen - Who Wants to Live Forever   My song pick 4 years ago today: Mr. Big - Fragile My song pick 5 years ago today: Bob Seger - Travelin' Man My song pick 6 years ago today: Uriah Heep - That's the Way That It Is My song pick 7 years ago today: Midnight Oil - No Man's Land My song pic...

5903. The Allman Brothers Band - Pegasus

Image
From: Enlightened Rogues ; Year: 1979; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock I have no idea as to why this song has not appeared yet on my blog, but it definitely is one of my favourite Dickey Betts' instrumentals. Pegasus really "cooks" throughout with the amazing playing by all on the track; just excellence personified.   Hear Pegasus on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Vixen - Cryin'   My song pick 2 years ago today: Weather Report - Surucucú   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Summer Lady   My song pick 4 years ago today: Bobby Freeman - Do You Want To Dance? 5742. Rossington Collins Band - Don't Misunderstand Me

Image
From: Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere ; Year: 1980; Genre: Southern Rock The other day the final founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington , passed away, which is an end of an era. It looks like 'Skynyrd is going to continue on for at least the short-term led by band veterans Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant, but only time will tell. Anyway, Rossington Collins Band was essentially what most of the surviving members of " The Plane Crash " went on to, feeling that they needed to move on. Whilst the band only existed a short time, it did have an impact on music with this track off of their debut record being their biggest hit.     Hear Don't Misunderstand Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: ABBA - Just a Notion   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jigsaw - Freud Fish   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - Faithless   My song pick 4 years ago today: Our Lady Peace - Starseed My song pick 5 years ago today: David Bowie - Scary...

5554. Lynyrd Skynyrd - You Got That Right

Image
From: Street Survivors ; Year: 1977; Genre: Southern Rock I've had them keep popping on my shuffle playlist quite often as of late, so I thought I'd pick another one of their songs today. If it weren't for the tragedy of the aeroplane crash that took the lives of three band members as well as the suffering of the survivors, this track would be an almost perfect feelgood rocker with that boogie beat and near perfect musicianship. Even with the fact of the crash surrounding it, this is one of their top tracks, which also features guitar virtuoso Steve Gaines singing co-lead with Ronnie Van Zant.   Hear You Got That Right on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Iron Maiden - Running Free   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jon Oliva's Pain - Festival My song pick 3 years ago today: Eddie Money - Baby Hold On My song pick 4 years ago today: Mr. Big - 1992 My song pick 5 years ago today: Fairport Convention - Dirty Linen My song pick 6 years a...

5427. Link Wray - I Got To Ramble (Dedicated to the Memory of Duane Allman)

Image
From: The Link Wray Rumble ; Year: 1974; Genre: Blues Rock Happened to be thinking about the music of Link Wray once again since yesterday; this album in particular I decided to look into. As the title states: this track is done in the style of The Allman Brothers Band in memory of guitar great Duane Allman, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident a few years prior. Link Wray and the rest of the band really show off their musical chops on this one.   Hear I Got To Ramble (Dedicated to the Memory of Duane Allman) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Thermals - Back to the Sea   My song pick 2 years ago today: Little Richard - Long Tall Sally   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby and the Range - Across the River My song pick 4 years ago today: Autograph - Turn Up the Radio My song pick 5 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Two Magicians My song pick 6 years ago today: Genesis - Silent Sun My song pick 7 years ago t...

5411. Molly Hatchet - Boogie No More

Image
From: Flirtin' With Disaster ; Year: 1979; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock Heard some of the music from this album the other day, and it just amazes me how much incredible musicianship, composition, and arranging Molly Hatchet was and is capable of. In this song, and many others, especially on this record, have so many musical ideas and schools of thought used throughout. Heck, they have some complex music here that really swings with all the jazz influence.   Hear Boogie No More on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe   My song pick 2 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Masters of the Galaxy   My song pick 3 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Legend of the Astral Hammer My song pick 4 years ago today: John Fogerty - Rockin' All Over the World My song pick 5 years ago today: Iain Matthews - Gimme An Inch Girl My song pick 6 years ago today: Marmalade - I See the Rain My song pick 7 years ago today: Maddy Prior...

5323. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Three Steps

Image
From: Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd ; Year: 1973; Genre: Southern Rock/Hard Rock Was listening to this song yesterday and was surprised that I had not chosen it yet, so I will remedy that today. Other than the story told throughout the track my favourite aspect from it is that really interesting and thumping bass line performed by apparently Ed King, who played the bass guitar on their first album; on subsequent records he was involved with the band.   Hear Gimme Three Steps on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Soundgarden - Superunknown   My song pick 2 years ago today: Tesla - Afterlife   My song pick 3 years ago today: Tom Rapp - Stardancer My song pick 4 years ago today: The Police - Mother My song pick 5 years ago today: Luther - Don't Wanna Be a Fool My song pick 6 years ago today: Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues My song pick 7 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Doggerland My song pick 8 years ago today: Carmen - Buleri...

5070. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Travelin' Man

Image
From: Twenty ; Year: 1997; Genre: Southern Rock I remember hearing this one a lot on the radio back in the late '90s/early '00s. The song actually featured the vocals of the late Ronnie Van Zant in a duet with his brother Johnny Van Zant, who is the band's current lead singer. The record's title: Twenty , is also in reference to the airplane crash that took Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, which was released 20 years after the accident.   Hear Travelin' Man on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Camel - Highways of the Sun   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Guess Who - Three More Days My song pick 3 years ago today: Heart - White Lightning & Wine My song pick 4 years ago today: Audioslave - Nothing Left to Say But Goodbye My song pick 5 years ago today: Eric Burdon & The Animals - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood My song pick 6 years ago today: The Who - 905 My song pick 7 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - ...

4750. The Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down To Georgia

Image
From: Million Mile Reflections ; Year: 1979; Genre: Country/Southern Rock As probably most know, yesterday I learned that music legend Charlie Daniels passed away. While I've picked some of his songs I was surprised that I had yet to pick his most famous piece that almost everyone who has been exposed to popular music has heard. 4708. The Allman Brothers Band - Sail Away

Image
From: Enlightened  Rogues ; Year: 1979; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock I was watching television the other day and happened upon a program that featured this album; sure brought back some memories. Originally I got an old stereo 8-Track tape of Enlightened Rogues and listened to it a lot back in the day. I still have it somewhere but with 30 years and 4 major moves I've kind of lost it; now I've been listening to it again and I forgot how much I liked it. Anyway, this was, I believe the last track on the tape and was part of my main "path" through the 4 tracks; it's one of my favourites on the album for sure. Hear Sail Away on YouTube. Image
From: Hittin' the Note ; Year: 2003; Genre: Southern Rock Time for some southern rock from the Allman Brothers Band.
