6172. The Coasters - The Deodorant Song

Image
From: It Ain't Sanitary ; Year: 1972; Genre: R&B/Doo-Wop/Comedy The Coasters are just one of those positive "feel good" bands that fuse the power of comedy into their act in a way that always makes them a favourite. Apparently It Ain't Sanitary was more or less a compilation album of unreleased tracks from the early 1960s; about '62 or '63 to be more precise. The Deodorant Song is one that sits right in line with most of the music they are known for.   Hear The Deodorant Song on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Barrabás - Wild Safari   My song pick 2 years ago today: The First Class - Beach Baby   My song pick 3 years ago today: Weather Report - Five Short Stories   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Death Valley Nights   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ray Stevens - The Streak My song pick 6 years ago today: Faith No More - Sunny Side Up My song pick 7 years ago today: Parliament - Do That Stuff My song ...

Image
From: Coast Along With The Coasters ; Year: 1962 (1959); Genre: R&B/Soul/Pop Every time I listen to The Coasters I am amazed by not only how much fun their music is to listen to, but just how amazing the performance, the music, and the production is. In about 3 minutes in length you also get a full tale being told in song with great vocal harmonies and a saxophone solo; they are among the best groups to come out of the 1950s.   Hear Run Red Run on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Return to Forever - After the Cosmic Rain   My song pick 2 years ago today: Nazareth - This Flight Tonight   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sam Cooke - Wonderful World My song pick 4 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - For The Weekend My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Lights Out My song pick 6 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Throw-N-Down the Funk My song pick 7 years ago today: Foreigner - At War Wit...

From The Coasters' Greatest Hits ; Year: 1959 (1957); Genre: Rock 'n Roll/R&B I let my computer pick my song today by shuffling my library; I came up with some great music from the legendary band The Coasters. Searchin' is one of their earlier hits; it's one of those classic songs you'd hear on a late 1950s/early 1960s jukebox. Hear Searchin' on YouTube. 3787. The Coasters - Smoky Joe's Cafe

Image
From: The Coasters ; Year: 1957; Genre: R&B/Doo-Wop/Rock 'n Roll Smoky Joe's Cafe just keep showing up on shuffle for me when out driving; I've always really liked this song and thought I'd already picked it. I checked and sure enough I hadn't yet, so I have my pick today so it would seem. This is one of those songs that seems a lot longer than it actually is; it's just so engaging and the story draws you in. But the way the vocals are done and the great, danceable R&B music just makes Smoky Joe's Cafe a definite classic and one of my all time favourites. Hear Smoky Joe's Cafe on YouTube. 2269 The Coasters- Poison Ivy

Image
From: The Coasters 20 Greatest Hits ; Year: (1959); Genre: Rhythm and Blues I've had this track in the queue for a while now, and I though I would pick it today. It's kind of funny, on the surface this is kind of an upbeat "feel good" song. However, if you dig into the metaphor-laced lyrics this one is somewhat of a "dirty" track about a superficially beautiful woman whose not only loose, but also carries a sexually transmitted disease. It's amazing to think that this was such a radio hit in the "wholesome" 1950s; of course the great performance by The Coasters probably had more to do with it being so big. Hear Poison Ivy on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Earthling Parade My song pick two years ago today: Stuart Hamm - Kings of Sleep My song pick three years ago today: Steeleye Span - Lovely on the Water My song pick four years ago today: Crosby, Stills & Nash - Just a Song Bef...

1202 The Coasters - Along Came Jones

Image
1202 The Coasters - Along Came Jones Was drawing a blank for my song pick this morning and then this rather cute track happened to start playing in my mind. I've never been heavily into silly songs. Don't get me wrong, I love the work of Weird Al, Cheech and Chong, and Dr. Demento, etc... but most of the time after the three or more times of playing it or so, like telling a joke too many times, it can start to become stale. For me, for some reason, The Coasters' silly songs don't seem to get as stale as fast as other comedic songs. I absolutely love how they arranged this song, especially the vocals; a true masterpiece of comedic music. Hear Along Came Jones on YouTube. Watch a television performance of the song on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Grand Funk Railroad - Footstompin' Music My song pick two years ago today: Petula Clark - Don't Sleep in the Subway My song pick three years ago today: Band of Horses - Wicked Gil +
