How earlier could you get than choosing something from the band that would become The Guess Who? Or more specifically wot the record company advertised them as a means to gain attention by leading people to believe they were an English beat group in anonymity: Guess Who? Long story short, it did bring them fame and they just stuck with that moniker. Lightfoot , which is a tribute to the legend and fellow Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, was originally the b-side track to their first hit single, ( These Eyes ), as what would be known as "The American Woman Lineup." There is just some magic that happens when you get Randy Bachman and C.F. From: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1984) ; Year: 1984; Genre: Hard Rock Been trying to get myself back into the swing of things as a musician so to speak; figured going to one of my earliest influences would be a good starting point. Their second self-titled record is by no means their best effort, it is, for me at least, without a doubt an album I enjoy; always love to have more material from some of my favourites. I only wish that they had recorded more before Fred Turner retired from touring, which I can understand with him now being an octogenarian and all. From: Four Wheel Drive ; Year: 1975; Genre: Hard Rock For me, the Four Wheel Drive album is always the one that seems to not get as much attention from the band's most famous "superstar" era; I honestly don't know why except possibly the sheer volume of excellent music they were putting out at that point. That being said, this is yet another shining example of "album oriented rock" that just works playing it straight through and thus you wont notice the weak material as much. She's a Devil is another one of their tracks that uses the more mellow and melodic verses and then launches into the much harder driving riff-based choruses; and of course C.F. You could kind of call BTO a supergroup at this point with two members from BTO: (C.F. Turner and Tim Bachman), one from The Guess Who: (Garry Peterson), and, of course, Randy Bachman who was in both bands. From: It's Time ; Year: 1966; Genre: Rock I was thinking about this album, which is essentially kind of the "pivot," if you will, in The Guess Who's direction as a band. This song in particular I find very fitting being at the end of the original record and has the group's soon-to-be former lead singer Chad Allen on lead vocals and their future lead singer, Burton Cummings, on backing vocals. After this The Guess Who would go from moderate success, mostly in their native Canada, on to huge international success.
