6304. Muse - Will of the People

Image

5603. Muse - You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween

Image
From: Will of the People ; Year: 2022; Genre: Symphonic Rock/Alternative Rock Happy Halloween to those few who visit my Song-a-Day blog! I discovered this new album from the band Muse the other day, which has at this time been out for about a couple of months, with this apropos song for today's pick. I really like the two keyboard parts that are both doing their own separate lines, but working together quite well. The "organ" piece on one plays around with some of the lines and themes from Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor (BWV 565), which is attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, whilst the other keyboard lays down some funky riffs, especially in the choruses, that are reminiscent of some of the classic tracks of the type heard back in the 1980s. Add to that the awesome groove from the rhythm section and excellent vocal delivery of some great lyrics, and you get one of the best songs I've heard from the band in a while.   Hear You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween on Y...

2187 Muse - Explorers

Image
From: The 2nd Law ; Year: 2012; Genre: Progressive Rock I felt like some Muse this morning and I thought I would take this opportunity to sample something off of their newest album. This is another one of their tracks that has a noted Queen influence to it, although the overall melancholy feel of the song shows off more of their own style. Hear Explorers on YouTube. 2009 Muse - Unnatural Selection

Image
From: The Resistance ; Year: 2009; Genre: Progressive Rock For those unaware, I since my song pick numbers have coincided with years I have been picking song from the year that is the same as my song pick number. Anyway, here's one from my favourite Muse album, which was released in 2009. I have, of course, already picked many songs off of this album and am choosing some deeper cuts now. Not to say that this is a "lesser song" by any means; far from that, it is an excellent track. Hear Unnatural Selection on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk My song pick two years ago today: Yoko Takahashi - Zankoku na Tenshi no These ( A Cruel Angel's Thesis ) My song pick three years ago today: Aphrodite's Child - Hic et Nunc My song pick four years ago today: Elton John - All The Girls Love Alice My song pick five years ago today: Rush - The Body Electric

1801 Muse - United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)

Image
From: The Resistance ; Year: 2009; Genre: Progressive Rock I had a few bugaboos in my schedule this morning, but am finally able to get my pick in, and guess what? I have also been meaning to pick this song for over a week now and am finally able to get to picking it as well! Anyway, this is one of the centrepiece songs off of their '09 The Resistance album and is also one of my favourites as well. This is a very dynamic track that reminds me a lot of Queen's music; some critics have actually compared it to " Bohemian Rhapsody " in particular. At the end of the song there is a nice light instrumental piece " Collat eral Damage," which is based on Frédéric Chopin's " Nocturne in Eb Major , Op.9 No.2" As with most of the rest of the material on this album, lyrically and thematically it has to do with tyranny and a call to rise up against it. From what I understand this track in particular was inspired by Zbigniew Brzezinski's book Th...

1573-5 Muse - Exogenesis: Symphony Parts 1,2, and 3

Image
1573-5 Muse - Exogenesis: Symphony Parts 1,2, and 3 From: The Resistance , Year 2009 Genre: Progressive Rock/Symphonic Rock For most of yesterday Muse kept popping up all over the place from my iPod, the radio, to the television. Since I actually like the band quite a lot anyway I figured that I would pick one of their songs today. Anyway, this is a three-part mini concept piece and is about 13 minutes in length; I hear a lot of classical composers' influence in this piece, Beethoven in particular. Long, multifaceted pieces like these used to permeate many of the Progressive Rock albums, but not as much in more recent years. When I first ran into this song it was a joy hearing a newer band taking the time and effort to write, arrange, and record one; not only that, but they did an amazing job as well. Here is Part 1 ( Overture ) on YouTube. Here is Part 2 ( Cross-Pollination ) on YouTube. Here is Part 3 ( Redemption ) on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Hawkwind - Spirit...

884 ( Muse - Knights of Cydonia )

Image
884 ( Muse - Knights of Cydonia ) A few months ago we started receiving a new HD channel on our television called Palladia , which features mostly live musical performances and also music videos from time to time. Anyway, last night before heading to bed they started playing some music videos and this was the first one featured. Now, I have heard this band before, but this song and the album it is from in particular have really caught my attention with its "Space Rock" feel. Whilst watching the video they kept reminding me of the band Hawkwind; I was actually surprised that they do not reference Hawkwind, Dave Brock, or even Lemmy as influences. An excellent song all the same and filled my craving for things progressive; it is nice to see that Space Rock is still alive and well. Here is the music video on YouTube. Here is a live performance on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Nightwish - 10th Man Down My song pick two years ago today: Jaco Pastorius...
