6958. Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back

Image
From: Mack Daddy ; Year: 1992; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap This is one of those songs that seems to get just about everyone up and shakin' their thang even some 34 years on. Not surprising that Baby Got Back hasn't gotten the static that many songs of a similar subject have; so many people love it and it is actually empowering to individuals that were maligned, (shamed), for not being like the cultural ideal of, more or less, a skeleton with skin stretched around it. Plus it's really well done and infectiously dance-inducing with a great lyrical delivery.   Watch the music video on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Into My Own Thing     My song pick 2 years ago today: Brenton Wood - Best Thing I Ever Had     My song pick 3 years ago today: Edgar Winter's White Trash - Keep Playin' That Rock 'n' Roll   My song pick 4 years ago today: Explorers Club - Impact 1 – Fate Speaks   My song pick 5 years ago t...

6924. Ugly Kid Joe - Sandwich

Image
From: Motel California ; Year: 1996; Genre: Alternative Metal/Rap Rock I do not know why, just wanted to go with something from Ugly Kid Joe today. Also decided on going with one off of this album, which I have not picked one off of yet. Motel California was released just prior to the band breaking up and going their separate ways with other bands and such until reuniting back in 2010. You can really feel that they were getting burned out by this time and probably calling it quits was the best course of action. A great deal of the music on this one was essentially doing the same music and ideas the other popular metal bands were creating. Good thing though is that after getting back together that "spark" and originality they were known for has been ever-present.   Watch the music video on YouTube.          My song pick 1 year ago today: Loverboy - Working for the Weekend     My song pick 2 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - I'm An Animal...

Image
From: In the Face of Funk ; Year: 1994; Genre: Funk/Hip-Hop Dang, I ain't kiddin', this Friday really did some sneaking up on me this week. 6816. Rage Against the Machine - Township Rebellion

Image
From: Rage Against the Machine ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Metal/Rap This is one of those records that has continued to reverberate almost 35 years since its release and counting; will probably still be totally relevant for another century or two. I absolutely love how their music is not stuck as a signpost from the 1990s, but feels and sounds as new as when released. The only real sad part about their music is that the same BS they were raging against is still happening and in some cases has gotten a lot worse. C'est la vie .   Hear Township Rebellion on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Cameo - Slyde     My song pick 2 years ago today: Savatage - Miles Away   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Eagles - New Kid in Town   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Positive Force - We Got The Funk   My song pick 6 years ago today:...

6807. Sir Mix-a-Lot - My Hooptie

Image
From: Seminar ; Year: 1989; Genre: Rap/Hip-Hop Been working on my car for a solid three days getting a worn out, super stubborn ball joint out and putting in a replacement. It always seems that I have these "little" maintenance chores that need done, but something always goes wrong and ends up a giant mess. Anyway, whilst getting ready to pick today's song I had this classic track pop into my mind and, under the circumstances, I knew there was no other track to choose. Sir Mix-a-Lot is one that immediately puts a huge grin on my face when one of his tracks plays. This one in particular I identify all to well with; I have owned quite a few vehicles that perfectly match his description, especially when I was younger. Rolling in a vehicle that is not road worthy or probably legal, but is yours is something that makes some incredible memories.   Hear My Hooptie on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Ritchie Valens - La Bamba     My song pick 2...

6727. Faith No More - As the Worm Turns

Image
From: Angel Dust ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Metal/Rap Metal You can definitely hear some of Mike Patton's influence from his other band, Mr. Bungle , on this one. I just love the way they mix so many types of music and sounds and come up with more or less a brand new sub-genre, which is something that Faith No More excels at in spades.    Hear As the Worm Turns on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Clarence Carter - Slip Away     My song pick 2 years ago today: Bloodrock - D.O.A.   My song pick 3 years ago today: King Crimson - The Talking Drum   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Association - Never My Love   My song pick 5 years ago today: Boston - Walk On   My song pick 6 years ago today: Rush - Heresy   My song pick 7 years ago today: Sister Sledge - Do the Funk Do My song pick 8 years ago today: The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 My song pick 9 years ago today: The Guess Who - Share the Land My s...

6690. E.U. (Experience Unlimited) - Funky Like a Monkey

Image
From: Cold Kickin' It ; Year: 1990; Genre: Funk/New Jack Swing/Hip-Hop A lot of good memories linked to this music for me; E.U. was definitely one of the main purveyors of this branch of funk in the late '80s/early '90s.    Hear a remixed version on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Toronto - Get It on Credit     My song pick 2 years ago today: Metallica - Tuesday's Gone   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pallas - Midas Touch   My song pick 5 years ago today: Queen - Who Wants to Live Forever   My song pick 6 years ago today: Mr. Big - Fragile My song pick 7 years ago today: Bob Seger - Travelin' Man My song pick 8 years ago today: Uriah Heep - That's the Way That It Is My song pick 9 years ago today: Midnight Oil - No Man's Land My song pick 10 years ago today: Soundgarden - Like Suicide My song pick 11 years ago today: D Train - ...

6674. Run-DMC - Christmas in Hollis

Image
From: A Very Special Christmas ; Year: 1987; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap/Christmas Music Christmas Eve is here, boy this Holiday Season is just flying by at hyper-sonic speed or at least it seem like it to me. Anyway, yesterday I said that I would choose this one in the future , well, it's the future now and an absolutely perfect time to choose this modern Christmas classic. It is just such a fun song to have on whilst getting things ready to go for tomorrow.     Hear Christmas in Hollis on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Manfred Mann - Abominable Snowmann     My song pick 2 years ago today: Trans-Siberian Orchestra - An Angel Came Down   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bing Crosby - I'll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In My Dreams)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Pavane   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Smashing Pumpkins - Christmastime   My song pick 6 years ago today: Duke Ellington & Hi...

6669. Sir Mix-a-Lot - Put 'Em on the Glass

Image
From: Chief Boot Knocka ; Year: 1994; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap Final pick for my "Satanic Panic Theme;" I wanted to go more upbeat to wrap this up. This was one of the many songs to make reference to the Satanic Panic and the PMRC. Despite the outcome of record labels having to put the Parental Advisory stickers on albums, it obviously did not do a single thing to temper more extreme musical artists and arguably made finding such material easier for underage people to find with that iconic label. A lot of other artists took a more explicit and derogatory stance in their response to that moral panic and subsequent ones still going on to this day, but I really liked Sir Mix-a-Lot's straight-up statement in this song: "How many times will you play this, before you ban this? I heard Mrs. Gore can't stand this."   Hear Put 'Em on the Glass on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Cranberries - In the End     My song pick 2 years ago today: Dr. John...

6636. Bell Biv Devoe - Ain't Nut'in' Changed

Image
From: Poison ; Year: 1990; Genre: New Jack Swing/Hip-Hop/Rap Been meaning to pick this one for a bit now and have finally gotten to doing so. This is another one of those songs from my early teens that brings back so many memories; among the best sounds of that early decade.    Hear Ain't Nut'in' Changed on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Ray Charles - What'd I Say     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Romantics - Rock You Up   My song pick 3 years ago today: Yes - Believe Again   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - If This Bass Could Only Talk   My song pick 5 years ago today: Winery Dogs - Solid Ground   My song pick 6 years ago today: Alestorm - Alestorm   My song pick 7 years ago today: Osiris - War On The Bullshit My song pick 8 years ago today: Triumph - Hard Road My song pick 9 years ago today: AC/DC - Big Guns My song pick 10 years ago today: The Yardbirds - For Your Love My...

6620. Whodini - Haunted House of Rock

Image
From: Whodini ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rap/Hip Hop/Funk Happy Halloween once again! I went with another one from Whodini this year; a lot of their music is absolutely perfect for the holiday. Haunted House of Rock is the first track on their debut album, so, not only did they open with a funky Halloween song for the ages, but it was most likely the first song of Whodini's that people heard.   Hear Haunted House of Rock on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party     My song pick 2 years ago today: Coven - Black Sabbath   My song pick 3 years ago today: Muse - You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween   My song pick 4 years ago today: Black Sabbath - When Death Calls   My song pick 5 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath   My song pick 6 years ago today: Helloween - The Time of the Oath   My song pick 7 years ago today: Concrete Blonde - Darkening of the Light My song pick 8 y...

6463. Tag Team - Whoomp! (There It Is)

Image
From: Whoomp! (There It Is) ; Year: 1993; Genre: Hip Hop/Rap I have found it odd how some songs from this period come to realize that even though I was more or less indifferent to them, they were, in fact, ones I look very fondly on and were part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. Whilst Tag Team is considered a "One Hit Wonder" by many, they sure did astronomically knock it out of the park. With the positive energy that ramps up a crowd it is no surprise that it became big with sporting events and other public events that require high-energy participation. Also, it has stayed in pop culture without fail for over 30 years now in about everything you could name; dang, now I feel old.... Anyway though, it goes to show how keeping things positive and energizing your listeners will ensure longevity.   Hear Whoomp! (There It Is) on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Nightwatchman - A Wall Against the Wind     My song pick 2 years ago t...

6344. Rage Against the Machine - Bullet in the Head

Image
From: Rage Against the Machine ; Year: 1992; Genre: Funk Metal/Rap Metal Perfect song to get the blood and endorphins moving to bring not only the workweek to a conclusion, but also the month. Dang, that is one killer groove from beginning to end; a perfect platform for Zach de la Rocha to belt it out over the top; amazing work.   Hear Bullet in the Head on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Santana - Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation   My song pick 2 years ago today: Weather Report - River People   My song pick 3 years ago today: Audioslave - Until We Fall   My song pick 4 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Power of the Laser Dragon Fire   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Cold Dead Reckoning (2044)   My song pick 6 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Good Rockin' My song pick 7 years ago today: Carmen - Bullfight My song pick 8 years ago today: The Outfield - Say It Isn't So My song pick 9 years ago today: Qu...

6245. Whodini - Freaks Come Out at Night

Image
From: Escape ; Year: 1984; Genre: Hip-Hop/Funk/Electronica/Rap Last Funky Friday before Halloween, so I'm not letting it go by without an appropriate pick. The 1980s seemed to have a trove of excellent funk flavoured creepy songs; this seasonal party favourite exemplifies this; pure funky freaky fun!   Hear Freaks Come Out at Night on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Stuart Hamm - I Want to Know   My song pick 2 years ago today: Diesel - Leader Of The Pac-Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: Al Stewart - Flying Sorcery   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Down   My song pick 5 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Fire & Ice   My song pick 6 years ago today: Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - Weed Whacker My song pick 7 years ago today: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band- The Fire Down Below My song pick 8 years ago today: Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) My song pick 9 years ago today:...

6184. Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Image
From: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised ; Year: 1973; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion/Rap Wanted to pick something unique and from an artist that I had not picked a song from on this Friday; and, boy did I find one! This is a rather poignant track from the late-great poet Gil Scott-Heron. It was originally released in 1971 as recited spoken word poetry accompanied by percussion, but a couple of years later was recorded with a full band.   Hear The Revolution Will Not Be Televised on YouTube. Hear The Original version on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Les Paul & Mary Ford - Bye Bye Blues   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Stylistics - Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - Somewhere   My song pick 4 years ago today: Joni Mitchell - God Must Be a Boogie Man   My song pick 5 years ago today: Funkadelic - Uncle Jam My song pick 6 years ago today: Hawkwind - Looking in the Future M...

6106. "Weird Al" Yankovic - Jerry Springer

Image
From: Running with Scissors ; Year: 1999; Genre: Comedy/Parody/Alternative Rock Needed something light and happier today, and I knew I couldn't go wrong with one of "Weird Al's" epic parodies. This one is, of course, his reworking of the hit song by The Barenaked Ladies: One Week . Al's subject matter is/was the over-the-top and brain destroying talk show hosted by Jerry Springer, which was strangely quite popular back in the late '90s; I guess it was another one of the cases of "entertainment for the lowest common denominator." I suppose that reality television and social media have since taken its place as an all-consuming place for such ilk to waste their lives.   Hear Jerry Springer on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Helloween - From Out of Nowhere   My song pick 2 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Lord of This World   My song pick 3 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cowgirl in the Sand   My song pick 4 years ago toda...

6098. Marcus Miller - Keep 'Em Running

From: Laid Black ; Year: 2018; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion/Hip Hop Felt like hearing something from the one and only Marcus Miller to bring this workweek to a close.
