Image
From: Chocolate Star: The Very Best of Gary Davis ; Year: 2006 (~1980); Genre: Funk/Soul It's a Funky Friday again; thought I'd pick one that's a bit off-the-wall. This one's got a real infectious groove and beat; the only detractor for me personally is the whispering vocals and moaning sounds, but other than that it's a great track. 3628. Chris Squire - Hold Out Your Hand

Image
From: Fish Out of Water ; Year: 1975; Genre: Progressive Rock Surprised I hadn't picked this one; it's probably my favourite song off of Chris Squire's Fish Out of Water album. This one that's deceptively difficult; on the surface it has a very listenable sound to those who just want a something to dance to, but when you listen past the surface there's a lot of amazing music going on. 3626. The Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra

Image
From: Abracadabra ; Year: 1982; Genre: Electronic Rock/New Wave I had early '80s Steve Miller Band on my mind and otherwise couldn't think of anything else to pick; not that it's a bad thing. Frankly, I was a little surprised that I had not picked the title track off of Abracadabra yet; I've heard it a lot throughout my life. This is one where the music is the main draw for me; I've always found the lyrics, (especially in the chorus), a bit camp, but that's part of the song's mystique and charm. Hear Abracadabra on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Blood, Sweat & Tears - And When I Die My song pick two years ago today: Styx - Mademoiselle My song pick three years ago today: David Shire - Night on Disco Mountain My song pick four years ago today: King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man My song pick five years ago today: Rush - BU2B My song pick six years ago today: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Born to Run M

3625. Jethro Tull - Rover

Image
From: Heavy Horses ; Year: 1978; Genre: Progressive Rock Ever since I first heard this song I was immediately hooked; as with the rest of the album. That bass line... dang; it's a pain to learn to say the least, especially in the instrumental sections. But that's wot to expect from a song John Glascock played on. Anyway, if you like prog rock with some folk influence this one's right up your alley. Hear Rover on YouTube. Image
From: ...The Stories We Could Tell ; Year: 2014; Genre: Hard Rock After hearing some of their work yesterday I thought I'd pick one off their latest album, which I don't believe I've chosen one from as of yet. Image

Image

3620. Bay City Rollers - I Only Want to Be With You

Image
From: Dedication ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Power Pop This one came on yesterday, and I realized that I had not picked one from the Bay City Rollers yet. Whilst they and their music are not my favourite variety, I do like them and I grew up hearing them a lot; both of my parents loved their music. Anyway, this is probably the best version in my opinion of this often covered pop standard; I love that backbeat and bass. Hear I Only Want to Be With You on YouTube. 3619. Fleetwood Mac - Emerald Eyes

Image
From: Mystery to Me ; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock When thinking as to which song I was to pick today; Fleetwood Mac's Mystery to Me album kind of got stuck in my mind. I think I've said it before, but this is one of the band's most underrated and forgotten albums with some real good music on it. This is the first track and very much welcomes you in with that 70's rock sound that would make them famous. Hear Emerald Eyes on YouTube. 3618. Rush - Open Secrets

Image
From: Hold Your Fire ; Year: 1987; Genre: Rock/Progressive Rock Ah, mid 1980s Rush; it seems that you either love it or you hate it, but I'm sure there are some middle-of-the-road fans out there too that are indifferent. I'm one that loves it; to me their journey through the '80s was much more experimental, pushing the band to do things differently. Sure, it was great in the 1990s when they went back to basics, but they really pushed their sound in my opinion during the 1980s. This in my opinion is among the stronger songs from Hold Your Fire , and one of my favourites from the album. Hear Open Secrets on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Sonny & Cher - The Beat Goes On My song pick two years ago today: The Soul Searchers - Think My song pick three years ago today: Soundgarden - My Wave My song pick four years ago today: Midnight Oil - The Stars of Warburton My song pick five years ago today: Rush - The Garden My song pick six years ago

3616. Hawkwind - Kerb Crawler

Image
From: Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music ; Year: 1976; Genre: Progressive Rock/Space Rock Had this album on my mind last night; as normal I thought I would pick another song from it. 3614. Silver - Wham Bam

Image
From: Silver ; Year: 1976; Genre: Pop/Rock Last night I got to see the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie and I immediately recognized this song, which I haven't heard since I was quite young. I think my dad has it on an old 8-track or "superhits" LP, I cannot remember exactly; definitely brought back a lot of memories. Anyway, it's typical mid '70s pop in almost every way, but in a good way, especially with the nostalgia factor. It's a well-performed track, plus I love that nice Latin beat. Hear Wham Bam on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Genesis - Supper's Ready My song pick two years ago today: Ian Anderson - Puer Ferox Adventus My song pick three years ago today: Jon Oliva's Pain - Afterglow My song pick four years ago today: B.J. 3613. Wall of Voodoo - Ring of Fire

Image
From: Wall of Voodoo (Ep) ; Year: 1980; Genre: New Wave/Electronic Rock A little bit of an off-the-wall pick for today with Wall of Voodoo's synthed out, new wave cover of the Johnny Cash classic. Whilst it's got a sound that larger than life in actuality the arrangement is sparse with basically keyboards, guitar, and vocals; everything else is less prominent in the recording. 3612. Jethro Tull - Mother Goose

Image
From: Aqualung ; Year: 1971; Genre: Progressive Rock/Folk Rock One of his more surreal and somewhat whimsical songs lyrically and very well written musically, Mother Goose is one of those songs that, whilst not one that I actively listen to, it's one that I do like. 3611. The Hollywood Argyles - Alley Oop

Image
From: The Hollywood Argyles ; Year: 1960; Genre: Rock 'n Roll/Comedy I felt like something light-hearted and comedic this morning and this one written about the comic featuring the caveman of the song's namesake. Basically, from what I understand, The Hollywood Argyles were more or less a band made up of studio musicians, and they do a great job of it. The beatnik inspired vocals are really wot makes it so good and fun to listen to. Hear Alley Oop on YouTube. Image
From: Foxtrot ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock Ever since last night when I had the epic piece Supper's Ready playing in my car it got me in the mood to hear the rest of Foxtrot again. Can-Utility and the Coastliners is such a great song over the spectrum; another one of those songs I wouldn't change a single thing about it if I could. 3609. Dream Theater - When Your Time Has Come

Image
From: The Astonishing ; Year: 2016; Genre: Progressive Rock This is one of the prettier songs and one of my favourites off their The Astonishing album. 3608. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Suck My Kiss

Image
From: Blood Sugar Sex Magik ; Year: 1991; Genre: Funk Metal I had RHCP's Suck My Kiss on my mind today and thought it would make a good Funky Friday pick, which is also my 195th consecutive Funky Friday.
