6598. Lighthouse - Disagreeable Man

Image
From: Can You Feel It ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock/Jazz Rock Had the Canadian Jazz/Rock band Lighthouse on my mind since last night. They are one of the main bands known for having a full horn section along with Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears, and as such have a lot of similarities on the surface, but also have a very unique sound. This track uses a lot of middle eastern/Spanish modes that makes quite an exotic blend of tones and musical ideas.   Hear Disagreeable Man on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Redbone - The Witch Queen of New Orleans     My song pick 2 years ago today: Karussell - Nachtkind   My song pick 3 years ago today: Aerosmith - Lightning Strikes   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jim Croce - Box No. 10   My song pick 5 years ago today: Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now My song pick 6 years ago today: The Cult - Sweet Soul Sister   My song pick 7 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Pied ...

6387. Lighthouse - Man, Woman, Child

Image
From: Good Day ; Year: 1974; Genre: Psychedelic Rock Thought I would check out this record, which was Lighthouse's final studio album for over 20 years when they released Song of the Ages in 1996. I can say it is really odd not hearing the horn section and/or strings in the dominant role that I am used to hearing on their songs; I always categorized them in my mind with bands such as Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. I do not know much about the band other than I really like most of wot I have heard, but it seems that they might've abandoned that core sound for this record. This is perhaps a sign of the band calling it quits after this one; from wot I have read they did tour through 1976 and did not really get together until the reunion in the early/mid 1990s.   Hear Man, Woman, Child on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Cameo - Attitude   My song pick 2 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - The Lights Go Down   My song pick ...

5957. Lighthouse - Sunny Days

Image
From: Sunny Days ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock/Jazz Fusion Lighthouse has always been one those bands that I like wot I have heard, but have not actually been exposed to a lot of their material. Only every now and then does it hit me to look into more of their music; today, of course, is one of those days. This record's title track, Sunny Days almost reminds me if, hypothetically of course, The Kinks jammed out with the Blood, Sweat & Tears; quite a fun track for both the interesting music and great lyrics.    Hear Sunny Days on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ulysses Crockett - Sunshine Superman   My song pick 2 years ago today: Automat - Mecadence   My song pick 3 years ago today: Carmen - Table Two For One   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - This Is Not Love   My song pick 5 years ago today: U2 - October My song pick 6 years ago today: Pendragon - Victims of Life My song pick 7 years ago today:...

3236. Lighthouse - One Fine Morning

Image
From: One Fine Morning ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock/Pop I was thinking about this Canadian group and their work over the last week or so and am finally getting around to picking another one of their songs. What really sets Lighthouse apart from the other popular bands of the time is that they had a full brass and string section and they used it; they weren't there for show. While somewhat similar to bands like Chicago, their sound is still quite unique. Hear One Fine Morning on YouTube. 1581 Lighthouse - Pretty Lady

Image
1581 Lighthouse - Pretty Lady From: Can You Feel It , Year: 1973 Genre: Rock For most of the morning I had this song running through my mind; I thought I would add it to my list for today's pick. I cannot begin to count the amount of times I've heard this song over the years; I believe that my dad had it on one of his many "Super Hits" records and he loved it. I distinctively remember my dad re-cuing the record; as I heard the song fade it would stop and then I'd hear the crackle just before the song began again. While this one has a mainstream Rock feel, it's quite a 'big' sounding song; there is a noted Jazz influence throughout. The horns and strings give an excellent hook in the breaks, and as with almost all Canadian Rock bands, I just love the driving rhythm section. Here is the studio version on YouTube.
