6889. Racer X - Lucifer's Hammer

Image
From: Getting Heavier ; Year 2002; Genre: Power Metal Started listening to Racer X again the other day; it has been fun to once again acquaint myself with their music. The technicality combined with the full-on power metal story-driven music/subject matter really works well.   Hear Lucifer's Hammer on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Jim & Ingrid Croce - What the Hell     My song pick 2 years ago today: The O'Jays - The Year 2000     My song pick 3 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Fire   My song pick 4 years ago today: Los Bravos - Going Nowhere   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Kinks - You Can't Stop The Music   My song pick 6 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - The World Keeps On Turning   My song pick 7 years ago today: Soundgarden - Slaves & Bulldozers My song pick 8 years ago today: Pearl Jam - Daughter My song pick 9 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Don't Follow My song ...

Image
From: The Thunderfist Chronicles ; Year: 2025; Genre: Pirate Metal/Power Metal Had them pop into my mind once again this morning; a good mix for doing your taxes to anyway. This is to date their lengthiest song at an epic 17+ minutes and filled with a great deal of big, astounding music and tales of boldness, adventure and legend.   Hear Mega-Supreme Treasure of the Eternal Thunderfist on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Boyz II Men - It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday     My song pick 2 years ago today: Daniel Boone - Beautiful Sunday   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Hallucinations   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Kinks - Sleepwalker   My song pick 5 years ago today: Carmen - The Horseman   My song pick 6 years ago today: Daniel Lanois - That's The Way It Is   My song pick 7 years ago today: Raspberries - Go All The Way My song pick 8 years ago today: The Thermals - Test...

6743. Gloryhammer - Holy Flaming Hammer Of Unholy Cosmic Frost

Image
From: Return to the Kingdom of Fife ; Year: 2023; Genre: Power Metal/Symphonic Metal I just cannot help but to love this band and their epic theatrics and larger-than-life cacophony that would be at home in any opera. Yeah, it might be camp and pretentious, but their delivery and singalong choruses really brings the listener/audience into the heroic tale.     Hear Holy Flaming Hammer Of Unholy Cosmic Frost on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Mr. Mister - Kyrie     My song pick 2 years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - Jerry Springer   My song pick 3 years ago today: Helloween - From Out of Nowhere   My song pick 4 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Lord of This World   My song pick 5 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cowgirl in the Sand   My song pick 6 years ago today: Band of Horses - Infinite Arms   My song pick 7 years ago today: Paris - Heart of Stone My song pick 8 years ago today:...

6622. Powerwolf - Kyrie Klitorem

Image
From: Wake Up the Wicked ; Year: 2024; Genre: Power Metal The blend of faith and carnal pleasures I suppose is a hallmark of a great deal of music traditionally, and of course, the many metal genres have embraced this century's old subject. I really like how the German power metal band Powerwolf wrote this one; not really focusing on the vulgarity or the overall extreme carnal nature, but really blends to show not only a tug-o-war, but a simpatico nature between the two erroneously perceived opposing forces. The urgency and overall feeling of the galloping music really adds to this greatly as well.  Hear Kyrie Klitorem on YouTube. 6451. Savatage - Forever After

Image
From: Edge of Thorns (Bonus Track); Year: 1993; Genre: Symphonic Metal/Power Metal Savatage, and the related bands for that matter, are another comforting band that gets me through rough patches. And since discovering that next year will be their first new studio release, ( Curtain Call ), since 2001's Poets and Madmen , I've been listening to them a lot more frequently; kind of hyping myself up for it. Whilst I am aware this will probably be it for Savatage and Jon Oliva's Pain as far as new material, I will savour it and the back catalogue. Plus, I highly doubt Trans-Siberian Orchestra is going anywhere.   Hear Forever After on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised   My song pick 2 years ago today: Les Paul & Mary Ford - Bye Bye Blues   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Stylistics - Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Soundgarden - Somewhere ...

Image
From: Tales From The Kingdom of Fife ; Year: 2013; Genre: Power Metal Here is where the epic story told by Gloryhammer began! The evil wizard Zargothrax invades the Kingdom of Fife with a horde of undead unicorns as told in a dark prophesy. Our hero must now go forth and meet this foe in mortal combat as the tale is retold in power metal song!   Hear Anstruther's Dark Prophecy/The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Gerry Rafferty - Can I Have My Money Back?   My song pick 2 years ago today: Billy Joel - Vienna   My song pick 3 years ago today: Quasar - Logic?   My song pick 4 years ago today: Lenny Kravitz - Circus   My song pick 5 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Starlight   My song pick 6 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Ooby Dooby My song pick 7 years ago today: Fats Domino - I'm Walkin' My song pick 8 years ago today: Ultravox - Dancing with Tears in My...

6213. Gloryhammer - Legendary Enchanted Jetpack

Image
From: Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex ; Year: 2019; Genre: Power Metal Never seem like there is enough nanoseconds in a day to complete all of your work anymore, but still making time to post a song today. Whilst there's nothing "serious" about it, there is a load of epicness and high-energy metal music to blast you through a Monday.   Hear Legendary Enchanted Jetpack on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Pearl Jam - Animal   My song pick 2 years ago today: Parliament - [You're a Fish & I'm a] Water Sign   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Raspberries - Tonight   My song pick 5 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Quick Change Artist   My song pick 6 years ago today: Spock's Beard - All on a Sunday My song pick 7 years ago today: Van Der Graaf Generator - White Hammer My song pick 8 years ago today: Bernard Wright...

6259. Stormwarrior - Freeborn

Image
From: Norsemen ; Year: 2019; Genre: Power Metal/Viking Metal I have not listened to this band in wot seems like ages; haven't chosen a song from them in a long while either... need to remedy both of those issues. Have not listened to a great deal of "Viking Metal" in a spell, and this has really given me a great sense of, (I cannot believe I'm typing this), "nostalgia." Hard for me to fathom that I had just gotten into this metal sub-genre about 20 years ago and couldn't get enough of it. Dang, has it been two decades....   Hear Freeborn on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Fleetwood Mac - I'm So Afraid   My song pick 2 years ago today: Frank Zappa - He Used to Cut the Grass   My song pick 3 years ago today: England Dan & John Ford Coley - The Prisoner   My song pick 4 years ago today: Firehouse - All She Wrote   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Motoreyes My song pick 6 years ago today: Ween - The Mollusk My son...

6213. Gloryhammer - Vorpal Laserblaster Of Pittenweem

Image
From: Return to the Kingdom of Fife ; Year: 2023; Genre: Power Metal Loving this new album from Gloryhammer; got all of that over-the-top drama and story telling that I have come to enjoy. I would really love to see some of their records performed as full-on operas with all of the dressing and pomp. That is essentially what they are, heck, if it was back in the Classical or Romance period this would be opera in all its grandeur.     Hear Vorpal Laserblaster Of Pittenweem on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Megadeth - United Abominations   My song pick 2 years ago today: Sly & The Family Stone - I'll Never Fall In Love Again   My song pick 3 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Forge of Vulcan   My song pick 4 years ago today: Asia - Ride Easy   My song pick 5 years ago today: Three Dog Night - It's a Jungle Out There My song pick 6 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Last Train My song pick 7 years ...

6181. Savatage - Miles Away

Image
From: Edge of Thorns ; Year: 1993; Genre: Power Metal/Progressive Metal Been listening to a lot of late '80s and early '90s Savatage lately; it was such a great time for the band musically with arguably much of their greatest material. This was one of the last songs written by the fraternal writing team of Jon and Criss Oliva before Criss' tragic death. Miles Away is among the best from this album with some excellent dynamics and musicianship.   Hear Miles Away on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Eagles - New Kid in Town   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Positive Force - We Got The Funk   My song pick 4 years ago today: Everclear - Santa Monica   My song pick 5 years ago today: Icehouse - Electric Blue My song pick 6 years ago today: Jackson Browne - The Load-Out/Stay My song pick 7 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Don't Turn Y...

6100. Europe - The Final Countdown

Image
From: The Final Countdown ; Year: 1986; Genre: Power Metal/Hard Rock Noticed that I had yet to pick this one from Europe, which is their most famous song on this side of the Atlantic; or perhaps just the U.S. at least. Anyway, even some 35+ years on it is an iconic anthem of sorts, which was, from what I understand, written around a "fanfare" on the synthesizer that was meant to introduce the band when coming on stage, but was wisely used instead for a basis for the track. Heck, even though many I have heard that malign the band and the song, it is still just as popular as it was back then; probably more with the younger generations discovering it.   Hear The Final Countdown on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze   My song pick 2 years ago today: Archie Bell & The Drells - The Soul City Walk   My song pick 3 years ago today: Xerath - I Hold Dominion   My song pick 4 years ago t...

5634. Rhapsody of Fire - Glory for Salvation

Image
From: Glory for Salvation ; Year: 2021; Genre: Power Metal/Symphonic Metal Rhapsody of Fire is and will always be one of the power metal bands that I absolutely adore; after listening to one of their records you feel like you can take on anything in the world, or at least that's how I feel. ;p.    Hear Glory for Salvation on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rare Earth - Good Time Sally   My song pick 2 years ago today: Asia - Anytime   My song pick 3 years ago today: Joe Cocker - Woman to Woman   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Soul System - Xmas Done Got Funky My song pick 5 years ago today: Queen - A Winter's Tale My song pick 6 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Rise of the Chaos Wizards My song pick 7 years ago today: Foghat - Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool) My song pick 8 years ago today: Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Scratch & Sniff My song pick 9 years ago today: Triump...

5559. Accept - Princess of the Dawn

Image
From: Restless And Wild ; Year: 1982; Genre: Heavy Metal I could've sworn that I had chosen songs from Accept, but I'm truly shocked to discover that I was in error and am well over 5000 songs into this blog and haven't even picked a single one. Well... that's definitely being fixed today; I've always really liked Accept and the music from Udo Dirkschneider, their material from the early-mid 1980s in particular. This is one of my top favourites of the band's albums and this track in particular is one I absolutely like; a perfect song to close out the record.   Hear Princess of the Dawn on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Funkadelic - Shockwaves   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Average Man My song pick 3 years ago today: Reverend Horton Heat - Psychobilly Freakout My song pick 4 years ago today: Fates Warning - Anarchy Divine My song pick 5 years ago today: Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal My song p...

5525. Savatage - Awaken

Image
From: Poets and Madmen ; Year: 2001; Genre: Power Metal/Progressive Metal I had Savatage's Poets and Madmen on my mind today, you know the rest.... Unless I'm mistaken, this was the "swansong" for the band, and they really went out on a high note with it. Although, technically the band did continue as both Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Jon Oliva's Pain, but there was something special about Savatage. This track comes towards the end of the story told throughout the album and is definitely a highlight; the verses in particular with Johnny Lee Middleton's bass and Jeff Plate's drums really sets the mood especially when they launch into the chorus.   Hear Awaken on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rush - Cut to the Chase   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Tales of Kidd Funkadelic (Opusdelite Years)   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Moody Blues - No More Lies My song pick 4 years ago today: 3 Inches of Blood - Wykydtron My so...

5449. Alestorm - Magellan's Expedition

Image
From: Seventh Rum of a Seventh Rum ; Year: 2022; Genre: Power Metal/Pirate Metal Became aware of this soon-to-be-released album from the epic pirate metal band Alestorm the other day; this was the first of the three songs that have been released I heard, I have to say that so far I like wot I hear. As stated in the title, this song is about the voyage of Ferdinand Magellan , who attempted to circumvent the world by sea; he, however perished but his ships and crew completed the expedition. Of course, the band Alestorm adds their own twists and style to the tale using their well-liked pirate themed metal.   Watch the music video on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Ventures - Twilight Zone   My song pick 2 years ago today: Victor Wooten - Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior   My song pick 3 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Satisfied Man My song pick 4 years ago today: Johnny Cash - Four Strong Winds My song pick 5 years ago today: Red Hot Chili...

5439. Gloryhammer - On the Wings of a Rainbow

Image
From: Legends From Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex ; Year: 2019; Genre: Power Metal/Symphonic Metal Was having some fun listening to some more epic fantasy-inspired metal from the one and only Gloryhammer. This was a bonus track off of their most recent album, and you can definitely hear influence of bands such as Iron Maiden on this one.   Hear On the Wings of a Rainbow on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Wishbone Ash - Drive   My song pick 2 years ago today: Queensrÿche - The Mission   My song pick 3 years ago today: C.W. 5367. Europe - Stormwind

Image
From: Wings of Tomorrow ; Year: 1984; Genre: Heavy Metal I thought I have for sure chosen a song from the metal band Europe at some point in the past, but apparently not. Sadly, almost everyone here in the U.S. knows Europe for the song The Final Countdown , which also has sadly in U.S. popular culture become associated with the time period of it's release and the "cheesiness" that comes with it.  Anyway, this is a somewhat earlier single of theirs off of their second album and has Judas Priest feel to it.   Hear Stormwind on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dazz Band - Let It All Blow   My song pick 2 years ago today: Faith No More - Epic   My song pick 3 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Too Shy To Say My song pick 4 years ago today: The Postal Service - Brand New Colony My song pick 5 years ago today: Wolfmother - Joker & the Thief My song pick 6 years ago today: Peter Gabriel - Digging in the Dirt My song pick 7 years ago t...

5218. Gloryhammer - Quest for the Hammer of Glory

5210. Savatage - Legions

Image
From: Hall of the Mountain King ; Year: 1987; Genre: Progressive Metal/Power Metal Needed some more Savatage today, more specifically material from their Hall of the Mountain King album.
