Image
From: Play Deep ; Year: 1985; Genre: Rock After a couple of their songs come on my playlist yesterday. 3481. Pallas - Shock Treatment

Image
From: The Sentinel ; Year: 1984; Genre: Progressive Rock Shock Treatment is one of the bit heavier songs musically on the album and also one of the three tracks that are not part of the original concept. Even though the song was created to be "more radio friendly" it still is dyed-in-the-wool progressive rock with all the technicality that comes with it. Hear Shock Treatment on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Marillion - Hooks in You My song pick two years ago today: Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity My song pick three years ago today: Queensrÿche - Breaking the Silence My song pick four years ago today: Aerosmith - Jaded My song pick five years ago today: Blind Faith - Had to Cry Today My song pick six years ago today: Jethro Tull - By Kind Permission Of My song pick seven years ago today: Peter Gabriel - Down To Earth My song pick eight years ago today: Edgar Winter Group - Free Ride My song pick nine years ago today: Janis Joplin - Me and

Image
From: This Close to You ; Year: 1977; Genre: Disco/Funk Was thinking about Luther Vandross' couple albums from his band of his namesake; thought I'd pick one for this Funky Friday. 3479. Melvins - With Teeth

Image

3478. Three Dog Night - The Loner

Image
From: Three Dog Night "One" ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock Had a couple of tunes from Three Dog Night on my mind; as usual I'm picking one. This is their cover of one of Neil Young's tunes from his first solo album released the same year; I have to say, Three Dog Night's version is quite a bit funkier and definitely has more soul flavour to it. With that great powerhouse rhythm section of Floyd Sneed and Joe Schermie you cannot go wrong. Hear The Loner on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Babies My song pick two years ago today: Live - Lightning Crashes My song pick three years ago today: Duran Duran - The Reflex My song pick four years ago today: Savatage - The Storm My song pick five years ago today: John Dowland - In Darkness We Dwell My song pick six years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - I Love the Night My song pick seven years ago today: The Byrds - Eight Miles High My song pick eight years ago today: Wings -

3477. Scorpions - Send Me an Angel

Image
From: Crazy World ; Year: 1990; Genre: Rock This has been one of my favourite albums and songs from the Scorpions. The deep, emotional, and self-exploring lyrics and their delivery is one of the biggest draws for me besides the great arrangement of the music of course, which hides a heavy song in the trappings of a ballad, but is so much more. Hear Send Me an Angel on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: R.E.O. Speedwagon - Ridin' The Storm Out My song pick two years ago today: The Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar My song pick three years ago today: The O'Jays - Give the People What They Want My song pick four years ago today: Rammstein - Alter Mann My song pick five years ago today: Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing My song pick six years ago today: Rammstein - Der Meister My song pick seven years ago today: Jethro Tull - Nothing to Say My song pick eight years ago today: Bad Company - Seagull My song pick nine years ago today: Diana Ross - Do You Kn

3476. Jethro Tull - Only Solitaire

Image
From: War Child ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock For some reason I had this rather short acoustic piece on my brain yesterday; I felt like picking it. Only Solitaire is one of Ian Anderson's jabs at the "in" and "hip" critics that, for fashionable reasons, knocked the more progressive bands that had more technical proclivities when it came to music. Hear Only Solitaire on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Modest Petrovitch Mussorgsky - Intermezzo Symphonique in Modo Classico My song pick two years ago today: The Soul Seven - The Cissy's Thang My song pick three years ago today: Soundgarden - Fell on Dark Days My song pick four years ago today: Rush - Driven My song pick five years ago today: The Moody Blues - Go Now My song pick six years ago today: Queen - 39 My song pick seven years ago today: Hawkwind - Standing at the Edge My song pick eight years ago today: Rush - Nocturne My song pick nine years ago today: Hea

3475. Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Woncha Take Me for a While

Image
From: Head On ; Year: 1975; Genre: Hard Rock/Rock I was having the Head On album on my mind last night and into this morning; figured I should pick one from it. I've always loved the dynamic of this song in the way the sections contrast. That launch into that heavy and powerful chorus out of the mellow verses; one heck of a hook there. Hear Woncha Take Me for a While on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Bass Extremes - Bassically Yours My song pick two years ago today: Bonnie Tyler - It's a Jungle Out There My song pick three years ago today: The Cult - Fire Woman My song pick four years ago today: The Beatles - Free as a Bird My song pick five years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Julie Don't Live Here My song pick six years ago today: Fire Bomber (Humming Bird) - My Soul For You My song pick seven years ago today: Hawkwind - D-Rider My song pick eight years ago today: Duran Duran - Rio My song pick nine years ago today: Rare

3474. Gloryhammer - Questlords of Inverness, Ride to the Galactic Fortress!

Image
From: Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards ; Year: 2015; Genre: Power Metal Every time I hear Gloryhammer their epic music brings a smile to my face and makes me want to go out and save the universe. They are one of those bands that is just awesome in their delivery; don't take themselves too seriously and want to tell an outrageous tale set to high-Adrenalin European metal. Yeah, it's pretentious, but who cares; this is pure epicness! Hear Questlords of Inverness, Ride to the Galactic Fortress! on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Bob Welch - Hot Love, Cold World My song pick two years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears My song pick three years ago today: UFO - Too Hot To Handle My song pick four years ago today: Stratovarius - Chasing Shadows My song pick five years ago today: The Beatles - Back in the U.S.S.R. 3472. Queensrÿche - Take Hold of the Flame

Image
From: The Warning ; Year: 1984; Genre: Progressive Metal Was listening to some off of their debut album this morning; as I normally do, I'm picking one from it. Take Hold of the Flame was one of the songs of note from it; which had more of an international following than here in The States. It's neat to hear the band at a more basic sound than wot would go on become one of the premier progressive metal acts. Hear Take Hold of the Flame on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Glenn Frey - Smuggler's Blues My song pick two years ago today: Weather Report - Predator My song pick three years ago today: Joni Mitchell - Hejira My song pick four years ago today: Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon My song pick five years ago today: Pearl Jam - Light Years My song pick six years ago today: Band of Horses - Factory My song pick seven years ago today: Rush - Freewill My song pick eight years ago today: R.E.M. - Stand My song pick nine years ago today:

3471. The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society

Image
From: The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock Very much in the mood for some Kinks today; this very British nostalgia-laced song just seemed like a pretty good choice. Hear The Village Green Preservation Society on YouTube. 3470. U2 - A Sort of Homecoming

Image

3469. Sammy Hagar - There's Only One Way to Rock

Image
From: Standing Hampton ; Year: 1982; Genre: Hard Rock Had this rather popular number from the Red Rocker off and on this week and I thought I'd go ahead and have it for today's post. There's Only One Way to Rock is definitely a crowd pleaser in most situations; a solid classic. Hear There's Only One Way to Rock on YouTube. 3468. Bon Jovi - Hey God

Image
From: these Days ; Year: 1995; Genre: Hard Rock/Alternative Rock I believe I've said it before, but as I get older these Days has become my favourite album from Bon Jovi. A lot of it has to do with the rawness and purity within it; you'd expect to hear an album like this from a band's early years, but not a decade later after being established and through the pop culture machine. Anywho, this is without a doubt the rawest and most "from the gut" song on the album. With the fact they were so raw musically and with there being no vocal harmony tracks it makes it quite gritty and in your face. Hear Hey God on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Parliament - Let's Play House My song pick two years ago today: Rare Earth - Warm Ride My song pick three years ago today: Pallas - Warriors My song pick four years ago today: Soundgarden - Flower My song pick five years ago today: Northern Kings - Wanted Dead or Alive My song pick six years

Image
From: Powerage ; Year: 1978; Genre: Hard Rock In the mood for some AC/DC from the Bon Scott era in particular. My song pick one year ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out My song pick two years ago today: Dream Theater - The Ministry of Lost Souls My song pick three years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Give it Time My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Waking Edge My song pick five years ago today: The Scorpions - The Good Die Young My song pick six years ago today: Megadeth - Elysian Fields My song pick seven years ago today: Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli (Quintette du Hot Club de France) feat. Freddy Taylor - Nagasaki My song pick eight years ago today: Miles Davis - Flamenco Sketches My song pick nine years ago today: The Kinks - Waterlo

3466. Imagination - Flashback

Image
From: Body Talk ; Year: 1981; Disco/Funk/R&B Happened to hear this one yesterday and thought it would make a good Funky Friday pick, which happens to be my 175th consecutive. Flashback goes more for the dance side of things, but that monster beat is incredible. Hear Flashback on YouTube. 3465. Weather Report - Blackthorn Rose

Image
From: Mysterious Traveler ; Year: 1974; Genre: Jazz Fusion Essentially Blackthorn Rose is a showcase of some great sax playing by Mr. Wayne Shorter with modest accompaniment. 3464. Al Di Meola - Black Cat Shuffle

3463. Powerwolf - Sanctus Dominus

Image
From: Blessed & Possessed ; Year: 2015; Genre: Power Metal I was thinking about this band again today, and I've been meaning to pick one for a bit now; better late than never. I'm surprised that no one has thought of mixing heavy metal and Latin lyrics with high fantasy, but Powerwolf does it excellently. Hear Sanctus Dominus on YouTube. 3462. Midnight Oil - No Man's Land

Image
From: No Man's Land (single); Year: 2003; Genre: Alternative Rock Last night I learned that Midnight Oil was embarking on a reunion tour this year; I certainly hope they swing by near here. Anyway, No Man's Land was apparently their last trip they made into the studio as a band for Alan Simon's Gaia Project album, (which I have not been able to find), and was also released as a single. It would be awesome for a new album, but I won't hold my breath over that one. Hear No Man's Land on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Soundgarden - Like Suicide My song pick two years ago today: D Train - You're the One for Me My song pick three years ago today: Deep Purple - Child in Time My song pick four years ago today: Peter Gabriel - Shock the Monkey My song pick five years ago today: Stormwarrior - Foreign Shores My song pick six years ago today: Larry Greene - Through the Fire My song pick seven years ago today: Puhdys - Geh Dem Wind Nic

3461. Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love

Image
From: 5150 ; Year: 1986; Genre: Hard Rock I had this song on my mind this morning, so I'm choosing it for today's pick. Whilst I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan on the band when I hear their music I normally turn it up and at least bob my head to the beat, which is the same with this morning. It would've been so easy back in the mid 1980s for them to have made this hit song a dyed-in-the-wool power ballad like a plethora of bands during the time were doing, but they went heavy with it instead, thank goodness. Hear Why Can't This Be Love on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Zapp - More Bounce to the Ounce My song pick two years ago today: Ugly Kid Joe - Milkman's Son My song pick three years ago today: Megadeth - Bite the Hand My song pick four years ago today: Jefferson Starship - Find Your Way Back My song pick five years ago today: Band of Horses - Compliments My song pick six years ago today: Hawkwind - Lord of Light My son

3460. Rush - Seven Cities of Gold

Image
From: Clockwork Angels ; Year: 2012; Genre: Progressive Rock Was listening to this album last night; figured I'd pick another one from it, (as I always do). This one has some great bass playing by Geddy Lee throughout this one; add that with the normal high quality musicianship of the band and excellent lyrics and you get a pretty good track. Hear Seven Cities of Gold on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Carmen - Viva mi Sevilla My song pick two years ago today: Benny Goodman - Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing) My song pick three years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Dreams My song pick four years ago today: Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love My song pick five years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Superstition My song pick six years ago today: Journey - To Play Some Music My song pick seven years ago today: Apocalyptica featuring Till Lindemann - Helden My song pick eight years ago today: James Gang - Funk 49 My song p

3458. Golden Earring - Twilight Zone

Image
From: Cut ; Year: 1982; Genre: Hard Rock Again, I'm very surprised of the bands that I have not picked a song from yet; I like Golden Earring, so it's definitely surprising. Anyway, this is probably my favourite song from the band; as a bass player it's one of those songs where you get to show off a bit when covering the song, so yeah it's fun. It's a well-done song all around musically and with the great story being told in the lyrics. Hear Twilight Zone on YouTube. 3457. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders - Louise

Image
From: Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders ; Year: 2006; Genre: Alternative Rock/Progressive Rock I was going over this album which is the debut record from Taylor Hawkins' side-project band/supergroup. 3455. Foreigner - Break it Up

Image
From: 4 ; Year: 1981; Genre: Hard Rock I had Foreigner's 4 album on my mind last night; as I'm always doing, I'm picking a song from it.
