William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Joe Cocker! ; Year: 1969; Genre: Soul/Gospel/Rock It is quite interesting how I have yet to find a version of this song that I do not like, I'm sure one exists, but I have not run into it yet. I really love the gospel and soul that Joe Cocker bestowed on this one; he sure did a lot of their songs, which is a testament to how the artists "gelled" and the writing prowess of The Beatles' members.   Hear Something on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Johnny Rodriguez - Erez tú   My song pick 2 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - More Hot Fun   My song pick 3 years ago today: Cheap Trick - Ain't That a Shame   My song pick 4 years ago today: Marcus Miller - Superspy   My song pick 5 years ago today: Seals & Crofts - Diamond Girl My song pick 6 years ago today: Rick James - Call Me Up My song pick 7 years ago today: Chris Squire - Hold Out Your Hand My song pick 8 years ago today: Al Green - Back Up Train My song pick 9 ye...

From: Joe Cocker ; Year: 1972; Genre: Blues Rock/Soul I've had music from Joe Cocker running through my mind this morning; took it as that I needed to pick another one of his songs. I remember hearing this one a lot whilst playing the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and thus it's been one I've kind of made a lot of memories attached to it. From: With a Little Help From My Friends ; Year: 1969; Genre: Soul/Rock For the last couple of days I've had Joe Cocker on my brain; I'm finally getting around to picking one in particular. Joe Cocker's version of this song originally recorded by Traffic, is probably the definitive version. Which seems to be something that he has done quite often with other songs. From: With a Little Help From My Friends ; Year: 1968; Genre: Soul/Hard Rock Taking a day off from picking Christmas music today. Yesterday I learned that Joe Cocker passed away; a writeup can be read here on BBC . Anyway, I figured that I would pick his biggest hit and one of my favourites from his catalogue. In my opinion this was always far and gone the best version of this Lennon/McCartney classic; so much soul and power. Rest in Peace Mad Dog. Hear With a Little Help From My Friends on YouTube. Today when working in the kitchen this song started running through my head as if it was playing on the radio; a lot of the songs that make it on this list are here for this reason as well. This is one of those songs that can be played in almost any setting to most people and they will enjoy it. I love Joe Cocker's gravely yet powerful voice, this along with the great musicianship in this song make it incredible. A nice rocker with a touch of blues and gospel; a powerful love song from 'The Mad Englishman.' Here is the music video on YouTube. +
