6812. ABBA - Fernando

Image
From: Greatest Hits ; Year: 1975 (1976); Genre: Pop/Rock Yet another case of a song playing in my head.... I cannot count the amount of times I have heard this track; my Dad owned everyone of ABBA's records and for the most part played them all the way through. For some reason this track in particular is one that just catches your attention even more that usual from the Swedish superstars. Originally Benny and Bjorn along with their manager Stig Anderson wrote this one for Anni-Frid's solo album in '75 and later recorded it as a single for the band as well; the original was sung in Swedish and the entire story/lyrics were different as well. With the Swedish version the titular Fernando, (whose name was taken from a bartender at one of the band's favourite clubs in Stockholm), is being consoled after the loss of a love. In the English version Bjorn wrote the lyrics in the form of two old veterans of the Mexican Revolution reminiscing about their tour of duty as freedom ...

6788. ABBA - The King Has Lost His Crown

Image
From: Voulez-Vous ; Year: 1979; Genre: Pop/Rock Off and on for quite some time I have had music from this record on my mind and with enough regularity that I am picking another one from it. Musically, this is a great "sit back and enjoy" kind of track very much in the norm of the hit making machine that was ABBA. Lyrically, this one is slightly darker in that it deals with the " schadenfreude " that the jilted ex-lover is feeling after her ex-boyfriend gets unceremoniously dumped by the girl he left her for.    Hear The King Has Lost His Crown on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Los Lobos - The Mess We're In     My song pick 2 years ago today: Ultravox - Visions in Blue   My song pick 3 years ago today: Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Northern Pikes - She Ain't Pretty   My song pick 5 years ago today: Parliament - Wizard of Finance   My song pick 6 years ago today: ABBA - Sup...

6692. ABBA - Does Your Mother Know

Image
From: Voulez-Vous ; Year: 1979; Genre: Pop/Rock Heard this one the other day and it has been on my mind a great deal ever since. It is always been one of those hooky " schlager " pop tracks that you just can't help but tap your foot to at the bare minimum. Those Swedes sure can write and record some catchy songs.    Hear Does Your Mother Know on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Sam & Dave - Don't Pull Your Love Out On Me Baby     My song pick 2 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - Rock 'n Roll Jelly   My song pick 3 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Sea Shells   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Nightwatchman - It Begins Tonight   My song pick 5 years ago today: Foghat - Drivin' Wheel   My song pick 6 years ago today: Rush (Neil Peart) - Der Trommler (Drum Solo)   My song pick 7 years ago today: Billy Joe Royal - Cherry Hill Park My song pick 8 years ago today: Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses My son...

6329. ABBA - Slipping Through My Fingers

Image
From: The Visitors ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock/Pop It's just interesting how a song can affect you differently at certian times throughout your life... this is one of such. Ever since becoming a father, especially the older my child gets, this one in particular will have me bawling in tears by the first chorus, which is, I suppose not a good thing when behind the wheel of your car or in mixed company. Whilst not a true sad song, it's just one that hits you hard knowing that your time with your child is very finite.   Hear Slipping Through My Fingers on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Temptations - I Truly, Truly Believe   My song pick 2 years ago today: Neil Diamond - Dry Your Eyes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Zealot Gene   My song pick 4 years ago today: Dick Dale and his Del-Tones - Mr. Eliminator   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jane's Addiction - Just Because   My song pick 6 years ago today: Jou...

6086. ABBA - The Name of the Game

Image
From: ABBA: The Album ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock/Pop ABBA's The Name of the Game kept coming to mind today and it seemed like as good a time as any other to pick it. This is yet another in a long line of pop songs in which the band embedded with some impressive musical ideas and arrangements. I have always especially loved that funky synth bass intro and how it the line was implemented in the rest of the track.   Hear The Name of the Game on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Naked Eyes - Always Something There to Remind Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Cosmic Sound Orchestra - Fight   My song pick 3 years ago today: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - If You Leave   My song pick 4 years ago today: Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth   My song pick 5 years ago today: Midnight Oil - King of the Mountain My song pick 6 years ago today: The Wootens - Do I Do My song pick 7 years ago today: Berlin - No More Words My so...

5814. ABBA - Bang-A-Boomerang

Image
From: ABBA ; Year: 1975; Genre: Rock/Pop Interestingly enough, this song is technically the cover and at the same time the original. Written by the Anderson/Ulvaeus songwriting team from ABBA for the musical act Svenne & Lotta for a song contest, but was later recorded for the album of the band's namesake.   Hear Bang-A-Boomerang on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Faster Pussycat - Nonstop to Nowhere   My song pick 2 years ago today: Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Mountain Labyrinth   My song pick 3 years ago today: David Bowie - Star   My song pick 4 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Standing in the Rain My song pick 5 years ago today: David Bowie - Five Years My song pick 6 years ago today: Queen - Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley My song pick 7 years ago today: Don Henley - Sunset Grill My song pick 8 years ago today: Bad Company - No Smoke Without a Fire My song pick 9 years ago toda...

5755. ABBA - I Still Have Faith In You

Image
From: Voyage ; Year: 2021; Genre: Rock/Pop Have been off an on listening to ABBA's last release and felt like choosing another song off the record on this Monday, which is also the first day of spring. This track oozes with some wistful sentimentality that really touches not only with the members of the band, but to the fans as well who have been along for the ride all of these decades.   Hear I Still Have Faith In You on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Mine Is the Mountain   My song pick 2 years ago today: Hawkwind - Ascent   My song pick 3 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - (You're A) Foxy Lady   My song pick 4 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Heroes Are Hard To Find My song pick 5 years ago today: Peter Gabriel - Come Talk to Me My song pick 6 years ago today: Chuck Berry - Maybellene My song pick 7 years ago today: Maddy Prior - Rollercoaster My song pick 8 years ago today: Bootsy's Ru...

5362. ABBA - Just a Notion

Image
From: Voyage ; Year: 2021; Genre: Pop/Rock Admittedly it took me a couple of times listening for this song for me to like it, and it seems the more I play it the more it grows on me so to speak. Just a Notion was one of the tracks off of ABBA's newest album release and actually was written over 40 years ago, but was abandoned for various reasons, however, with the new record it was given a second chance being updated and reworked. To me, this song sounds the most like their classic sound from it; probably due to its genesis being from the time their fame was at its peak. Anyway, I really like the rhythm section, especially that walking bass line; you can tell that they really tried to do the drums and bass in the powerhouse styles of Ola Brunkert and Rutger Gunnarsson.   Hear Just a Notion on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jigsaw - Freud Fish   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - Faithless   My song pick 3 years ago today: Our Lady Peac...

5180. ABBA - Don't Shut Me Down

Image
From: Voyage ; Year: 2021; Genre: Pop/Rock I decided to sample the newest offering from ABBA that just came out a couple of days ago and I can say that I am pretty satisfied as a fan of their music. This is one of two lead singles from their brand new album that will be released in November; 40 years in the making since their last one. Anyway, I really like how they took an additive approach to their classic sound instead of trying to reinvent themselves for the contemporary market. I can say: if you liked their music before you'll probably like it now.   Hear Don't Shut Me Down on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Classics IV - Stormy My song pick 2 years ago today: Wilson Pickett - Funky Situation My song pick 3 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Second Hand News My song pick 4 years ago today: Harlequin - Innocence My song pick 5 years ago today: Waylon Jennings - Theme from 'The Dukes of Hazzard' (Good Ol' Boys) My song pick 6 years ago today:...

5130. ABBA - Eagle

Image
From: ABBA: The Album ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock Eagle is among my top favourites from ABBA and always has been; there's a lot to listen to in this one. Layers upon layers of music, vocals and other sounds, it's such an interesting track in many ways.   Hear Eagle on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: George Harrison - Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)   My song pick 2 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - The Bouncer My song pick 3 years ago today: Dick Dale - Summer Surf My song pick 4 years ago today: Neil Young - Computer Cowboy (aka Syscrusher) My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Foot of Our Stairs My song pick 6 years ago today: Peter Tosh - Rumors of War My song pick 7 years ago today: War - Low Rider My song pick 8 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Truganini My song pick 9 years ago today: The Nightwatchman - I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night My song pick 10 years ago today: Van der Graaf ...

Image
From: Super Trouper ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock/Pop I was thinking about some songs from ABBA today and thought I'd pick one as well. 4668. ABBA - Super Trouper

Image
From: Super Trouper ; Year: 1980; Genre: Pop/Rock I've had this song playing in my head the last couple days and thought I'd go ahead and make it today's pick. Whilst I like this song it's not my favourite of even second favourite from the record, but there's a lot of great music to be heard in this one along with the amazing vocals the band is known for. 4467. ABBA - Lay All Your Love On Me

Image
From: Super Trouper ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock I've always loved the big sound of ABBA's Lay All Your Love on Me , especially in the choruses. 4365. ABBA - Andante, Andante

Image
From: Super Trouper ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock/Pop As I've said prior about ABBA, their last pair of albums have always been my favourite; Super Trouper being one of them. I happened upon this song from the album recently and it's been going through my mind. The best part of the song for me are the instrumental sections; whilst being written around a simple melody, the keys and guitar are so beautifully done. Hear Andante, Andante on YouTube. 3997. ABBA - One of Us

Image
From: The Visitors ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock/Pop Off and on ever since I heard that they were getting back together and releasing a new song later this year I've had ABBA on my mind. This was their last #1 hit song before their disbanding. I've always especially loved the bass and drums on this one. Hear One of Us on YouTube. 3405. ABBA - Head Over Heels

Image
From: The Visitors ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock/SynthPop I was in the mood for something from ABBA on this Sunday. Never really listened to the rather uninspiring lyrics, but I've always loved the music and the way this song was constructed and arranged; it's quite complex for a 'pop' song. The use of the tango beat in particular really helps to make it so danceable whilst also keeping it interesting for the musical ear. Hear Head Over Heels on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Dr. John - Right Place Wrong Time My song pick two years ago today: Billy Joel - All for Leyna My song pick three years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Adventures in Paradise My song pick four years ago today: Megadeth - Blackmail the Universe My song pick five years ago today: Black 47 - Fire of Freedom My song pick six years ago today: Aerosmith - Amazing My song pick seven years ago today: Banchee - Beautifully Day My song pick eight years ago today: The Cure - Bu...

3229. ABBA - Two for the Price of One

Image
From: The Visitors ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock/Pop This is another one that is not what you would expect from the band and genre of the song. As with most of The Visitors album, the music and arrangements are much more interesting and complex. Two for the Price of One borders on a mini opera in its construction with sections that are quite different one another; it's a neat little tune wrapped up in a very interesting package. Hear Two for the Price of One on YouTube. 2568 ABBA - Knowing Me, Knowing You

Image
From: Arrival ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Pop I had some ABBA on my mind this morning, and it felt like a good day to pick one of their songs. 2246 ABBA - Dum Dum Diddle

Image
From: Arrival ; Year: 1976; Genre: Pop/Rock It's funny, but in all actuality this song should truly suck across the board, but the way Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and company arranged it made this track about a girlfriend's jealousy of her boyfriend's violin actually pretty good. Hear Dum Dum Diddle on YouTube.
