6779. David Essex - Lamplight

Image
From: Rock On ; Year: 1973; Genre: Glam Rock This jazzy pop number was the second single off of his debut album; it reminds me a lot of Dr. John , which is not surprising since David Essex was a fan of his. I have always found his music interesting in that he was a "pop idol," but has always been very experimental and progressive while still being consumable to the mainstream.    Hear Lamplight on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Midnight Oil - We Are Not Afraid     My song pick 2 years ago today: Marillion - Care   My song pick 3 years ago today: Eric Burdon and War - The Vision of Rassan   My song pick 4 years ago today: Brave Belt - Long Way 'Round   My song pick 5 years ago today: Meat Loaf - Paradise By the Dashboard Light   My song pick 6 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Light Years of Love   My song pick 7 years ago today: Tool - Vicarious My song pick 8 years ago today: Nena - Ich häng' an dir...

6606. Ace Frehley - New York Groove

Image
From: Ace Frehley ; Year: 1978; Genre: Glam Rock Yesterday was taken aback when I saw that founding member, Ace "Space Man" Frehley, of the band Kiss passed away after complications from an accidental fall. He was probably the member of the band I admired the most, if nothing else for the way he let his virtuosity speak for him instead of his mouth. Anyway, this one is from his first solo record, which was one where each member of Kiss made their own album whilst still a member; from wot I understand, it was the best-selling of the four. New York Groove was really the first song from his work outside Kiss that I really liked, but others since I have liked as well. It was originally written by songwriting powerhouse Russ Ballard and recorded by the English glam band Hello a few years prior. However, I have to say, Ace really made the track his own.   Hear New York Groove on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Kinks - Do You Remember Walter? ...

6283. Tesla - All the Young Dudes

Image
From: Real to Reel, Vol. 2 ; Year: 2007; Genre: Glam Rock I just keep coming back to Tesla's two albums of cover songs; it is just so awesome to hear a band I like play the songs of other bands that I like. They do a great service to this song originally recorded by Mott the Hoople; keeping all of the spirit of it intact whilst placing their own stamp on it.   Hear All the Young Dudes on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Underdog   My song pick 2 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Morning Rain   My song pick 3 years ago today: Faith No More - Naked in Front of the Computer   My song pick 4 years ago today: The B-52's - Deadbeat Club   My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - Crown of Thorns   My song pick 6 years ago today: 10cc - I'm Not In Love My song pick 7 years ago today: David Essex - A Winter's Tale My song pick 8 years ago today: Howlin' Wolf - I Ain't Superstitious My song pick 9 years a...

6304. Muse - Will of the People

Image
From: Will of the People ; Year: 2022; Genre: Glam Rock/Hard Rock Here is another rousing song from Muse, which is a band that I have had on my mind for the last handful of days. Gotta love that rock 'n roll/rockabilly vibe in the main riff; it sets off an interesting mix.   Hear Will of the People on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Kenny Loggins - Whenever I Call You "Friend"   My song pick 2 years ago today: R.E.O. 6248. Def Leppard - Rocket

Image
From: Hysteria ; Year: 1987; Genre: Hard Rock/Glam Metal Had this one come on the radio whilst driving around this morning. Normally do not listen to actual over-the-air broadcasts anymore, but was in my older car with a stereo from the 1990s installed, so it was wot I had. Rocket is one of their biggest hits, but admittedly the sound is very much a product of its time, so it instantly takes you back when it comes on.   Hear Rocket on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jigsaw - Just Another Clown   My song pick 2 years ago today: Living Colour - Sunshine Of Your Love   My song pick 3 years ago today: Kansas - All The World   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Part Time Lover   My song pick 5 years ago today: 30 Seconds to Mars - Echelon My song pick 6 years ago today: Blind Melon - Deserted My song pick 7 years ago today: Forest - Graveyard My song pick 8 years ago today: Billy Joel - Laura My song pick 9 years ...

6228. Mott the Hoople - One of the Boys

Image
From: All the Young Dudes ; Year: 1972; Genre: Hard Rock/Glam Rock Don't know why, but for a long while I have been thinking about this band; there's just something about them and their sound that I really like and connect with on a few levels. And with that, June is over; bring on July!    Hear One of the Boys on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Parliament - Unfunky UFO   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bread - Let Your Love Go   My song pick 3 years ago today: Simple Minds - Love Song   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Hard Liner   My song pick 5 years ago today: Traffic - Glad My song pick 6 years ago today: Megadeth - Rattlehead My song pick 7 years ago today: Parliament - Everything Is on the One My song pick 8 years ago today: Symphony X - Iconoclast My song pick 9 years ago today: John Fogerty - The Old Man Down the Road My song pick 10 years ago today: Jefferson Airplane - 3/5 of a Mile in 10 Sec...

6222. Bay City Rollers - Rock n' Roll Love Letter

Image
From: Rock n' Roll Love Letter ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Pop Just have this Scots Pop/Rock band's music on my mind today, and thus I am choosing another one of their songs. It was one of two singles and the title-track to boot; has a load of that fun '70s pop sound in spades.   Hear Rock n' Roll Love Letter on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Stevie Wonder - I Just Called To Say I Love You   My song pick 2 years ago today: Anita Ward - Ring My Bell   My song pick 3 years ago today: Tears for Fears - Elemental   My song pick 4 years ago today: ABBA - On And On And On   My song pick 5 years ago today: Rainbow - Stargazer My song pick 6 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy My song pick 7 years ago today: The Winery Dogs - Oblivion My song pick 8 years ago today: Lipps Inc - Funkytown My song pick 9 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1080 - Art of Fugue My song pick 10 years ago today: Rage Against the...

6138. Spacehog - Only a Few

Image
From: Resident Alien ; Year: 1995; Genre: Alternative Rock For some unknown reason I kind of drift toward and away from this band without any pattern, and recently it has been the former, so I decided to pick another one. This one is a rather chill and laid back track that just fits my mood today.   Hear Only a Few on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Duran Duran - New Religion   My song pick 2 years ago today: T. 6137. Nelson - (Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection

Image
From: After the Rain ; Year: 1990; Genre: Hard Rock/Glam Rock Speaking of Ricky Nelson, here's the biggest hit by his twin sons: Mathew and Gunnar and their band of their family namesake. Kind of an interesting factoid: they are apparently the only family that had number 1 hit songs over three consecutive generations. Starting with their grandparents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, their father, Ricky Nelson, and themselves; certainly a gifted family, no doubt. Love and Affection is one I remember hearing a lot back then, and even in more recent years, although more infrequent. It's kind of a blast hearing it, but it does play in my mind from time to time as well.   Hear (Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Louis Armstrong - Everybody's Talkin' (Echoes)   My song pick 2 years ago today: Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way   My song pick 3 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground   My song ...

6076. Mott the Hoople - The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll

Image
From: 'The Hoople ; Year: 1974; Genre: Glam Rock It is interesting how Mott the Hoople has always been on some sort of a "periphery" for me personally; only knew a couple songs of theirs, liked wot I heard, but only recently have been delving into their catalogue. I first heard a cover of this song by Def Leppard some years ago and it got me wanting to hear the original. I am glad I did and I love the track.   Hear The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blood, Sweat & Tears - I Can't Quit Her   My song pick 2 years ago today: Napoleon XIV - Marching Off To Bedlam   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Beatles - Within You Without You   My song pick 4 years ago today: Savatage - Labyrinths   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - To Cry You a Song My song pick 6 years ago today: Gentle Giant - All Through the Night My song pick 7 years ago today: Duran Duran - Save a Prayer My song pick 8 ...

6072. Nick Gilder - 21st Century

Image
From: City Nights ; Year: 1978; Genre: Glam Rock I remember this record in particular when young, Nick Gilder's music got a lot of airplay throughout that time if memory serves. Whilst also known for his work as frontman for the glam rock act Sweeny Todd, he made a bigger splash as a solo artist and songwriter for many others who would make huge hits out of them.   Hear 21st Century on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Brenton Wood - The Oggum Boogum Song   My song pick 2 years ago today: George Clinton - Do Fries Go With That Shake?   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jefferson Starship - Alien   My song pick 4 years ago today: Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get It Right   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ten Years After - Over the Hill My song pick 6 years ago today: The Who - Sister Disco My song pick 7 years ago today: Pallas - Shock Treatment My song pick 8 years ago today: Marillion - Hooks in You My song pick 9 years ago to...

5951. Meat Loaf - Hot Patootie -- Bless My Soul

Image
From: The Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack ; Year: 1975; Genre: Rock 'n Roll/Glam Rock A new month starts to-day, and it has been a real busy one thus far. For me, October has always signaled the beginning of the Autumn season and thus gets me in the mood for all things related for it; one being cheesy horror and pseudo-horror flicks. I suppose The Rocky Horror Picture Show only barely qualifies as the latter, but it's still fits the season and is always entertaining no matter the time of year to be honest; especially when watched in mixed company. 😁 Anyway, this track is the show-stopper where Meat Loaf's character Eddie shows up to sing this bombastic rocker, in which as always, he kicks some serious butt vocally with epic showmanship. Great song, great film/musical for such a great time of year.   Hear Hot Patootie -- Bless My Soul on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died In Your Arms   My song pick 2 years ago toda...

5931. David Bowie - Soul Love

Image
From The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ; Year: 1972; Genre: Space Rock/Glam Rock For the last couple or so of months I have kept returning to this rather historic album and at the same time attempting to listen to it with "fresh ears" so to speak. Essentially trying to hear parts of the song I haven't normally focused on and to listen deeper into wot I do normally pay most of my attention to. I can say it definitely has been eye, or rather ear opening to behold this amazing space rock opera both musically and lyrically.   Hear Soul Love on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Band of Horses - Lights   My song pick 2 years ago today: Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love   My song pick 3 years ago today: Funkadelic - Connections & Disconnections My song pick 4 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Ashes in the Fall My song pick 5 years ago today: The Thermals - Power Doesn't Run on Nothing My song ...

5880. Spacehog - Zeroes

Image
From: Resident Alien ; Year: 1995; Genre: Alternative Rock/Glam Rock After coming to mind the other day and listening to this album again I thought I would choose one from it as this Sunday's pick. Zeroes definitely has a different feel to it from their more mainstream tracks on the record, yet is still similar enough to its brethren but in a bigger package both in length and sound.    Hear Zeroes on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Carmen - Retirando   My song pick 2 years ago today: George Clinton - Last Dance My song pick 3 years ago today: Marillion - Cover My Eyes (Pain in Heaven)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Don Henley - All She Wants to Do Is Dance My song pick 5 years ago today: Brave Belt - Can You Feel It My song pick 6 years ago today: Soundgarden - Rowing My song pick 7 years ago today: Carmen - Joy My song pick 8 years ago today: Alice Mudgarden (Alice in Chains) - Right Turn My song pick 9 years ago today:...

5879. David Bowie - Moonage Daydream

Image
From: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ; Year: 1971; Genre: Space Rock/Glam Rock Heard this great track the other day whilst out and about once again, which seemed like a perfect pick. It's interesting how it seems that the late-great David Bowie was about the only one who could write and perform a space rock song and it would become extremely popular hit. This record is loaded with great memorable tunes and this one is at or near the top in my opinion. There's not one single aspect of this song that I dislike; such a great song.   Hear Moonage Daydream on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The O'Jays - Love Train   My song pick 2 years ago today: Billy Joel - The Stranger   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ace - How Long   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Fixx - Red Skies My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Raising Steam My song pick 6 years ago today: Tesla - Hang Tough My song pick 7 years ...

5779. Sweet - Call Me

Image
From: Cut Above the Rest ; Year: 1979; Genre: Rock/Glam Rock Had another song from another band in mind for today's pick, but had another case of another band's music permeating my mind. This track was from their first record without original vocalist Brian Connolly and is a wee bit different from their popular sound. As this incarnation as a power trio they shared duties at lead vocals, which obviously altered it stylistically, but also the musical arrangements changed a bit as well.   Hear Call Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lou Rawls - Groovy People   My song pick 2 years ago today: Marillion - Dry Land   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ray Davies - The Getaway   My song pick 4 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Keep On Chooglin' My song pick 5 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Luther the Anthropoid (Ape Man) My song pick 6 years ago today: Pallas - Falling Down My song pick 7 years ago today:...

5705. Spacehog - Carry On

Image
From: The Chinese Album ; Year: 1998; Genre: Glam Rock For some reason unbeknownst to me I felt the urge to pick another one from this often overlooked band. This is one of the singles from their second record, and while not at the same level as the songs on their debut album, it's still an awesome time to be had to sit back and bob your head to these tracks.   Hear Carry On on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Robin Trower - Bluebird   My song pick 2 years ago today: Pleasure - Glide   My song pick 3 years ago today: Wings - Venus and Mars   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pearl Jam - I Got Id My song pick 5 years ago today: Crash Test Dummies - In the Days of the Cavemen My song pick 6 years ago today: Muse - City of Delusion My song pick 7 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away My song pick 8 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies - If I Had $1000000 My song pick 9 years ago today: Rush - The Anarchist My song pi...

5680. Sweet - Love Is Like Oxygen

Image
From: Level Headed ; Year: 1978; Genre: Glam Rock/Hard Rock I felt like choosing something rather fun and familiar for today's pick; some late-1970s Sweet just seemed like an excellent song to go with. I really liked how the glam rock pioneers were dabbling in other styles of popular music at this point in their career; you can hear hints of progressive and symphonic rock throughout this piece, which is a bit odd for the time period, but they pulled it off just great.   Hear Love Is Like Oxygen on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Red Rider - Laughing Man   My song pick 2 years ago today: Heart - Straight On   My song pick 3 years ago today: Zones - Mourning Star   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Lenny My song pick 5 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - (The System of) Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether My song pick 6 years ago today: Golden Earring - Twilight Zone My song pick 7 years ago t...

5591. The Edgar Winter Group - Animal

Image
From: Shock Treatment ; Year: 1974; Genre: Hard Rock Again, I don't know why, but I just felt like picking a song from Edgar Winter and company. This is kind of a weird song, which is always great in my opinion, that closes out the second album from The Edgar Winter Group. I really like the almost glam rock feel tacked on to the overall hard-edged rock on this track as well as Edgar Winter's signature experimental sound with the synthesizers.   Hear Animal on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Eagles - The Disco Strangler   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Meliora Sequamur   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Delgados - Strathcona Slung   My song pick 4 years ago today: Genesis - Misunderstanding My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - The Blinding Darkness of Science My song pick 6 years ago today: Aerosmith - Remember (Walking in the Sand) My song pick 7 years ago today: AC/DC - Money Talks My song pick 8 yea...

5541. The Winery Dogs - Moonage Daydream

Image
From: Dog Years (EP) ; Year: 2017; Genre: Hard Rock/Glam Rock Going back over some of the material from The Winery Dogs; thought I'd choose this 'Bowie cover for my pick today. I really like what they did on this one, especially Ritchie Kotzen's vocals; he really knocked it out of the park. Overall, with the amazing musical talent and virtuosity by the trio, I was really amazed how they pulled their version off and not just make it about maximum notes, velocity, and such.   Hear Moonage Daydream on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bonnie Tyler - Straight From The Heart   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Who - I Can't Explain   My song pick 3 years ago today: Journey - Kohoutek My song pick 4 years ago today: The Chakachas - Yo Soy Cubano My song pick 5 years ago today: George Gershwin - An American in Paris My song pick 6 years ago today: War - Summer My song pick 7 years ago today: The Mamas & the Papas - Go Where You Wanna Go...
