6941. Gloryhammer - Battle for Eternity

Image
From: Legends From Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex ; Year: 2016; Genre: Power Metal There's always something about the utter unabashed "epicness" of the music of Gloryhammer that always gets me in a better mood. Definitely gives me the feeling that I can get up and slay the evil beasties throughout the day.    Hear Battle for Eternity on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Cars - Good Times Roll     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Guess Who - Talisman     My song pick 3 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Midnight Blue   My song pick 4 years ago today: Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Who - 5.15   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Delfonics - Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide From Love) My song pick 7 years ago today: Foghat - Fool for the City My song pick 8 years ago today: Asia - Daylight My song pick 9 years ago today: Steeleye Sp...

6935-9. Marillion - El Dorado

Image
From: Fuck Everyone And Run (F E A R) ; Year: 2016; Genre: Progressive Rock I must be in a solemn or melancholy mood lately; been listening to a lot of heavy downer, but powerful music. I suppose this whole record is more so with the overall current subject matter of how humankind has devolved to the point of seeing an impending global catastrophe, be it economic, humanitarian, etc... and the overall reaction, especially those who have the ability to make a difference, to just greedily acquire all the money and resources whilst charging head-first into the annihilation. Kind of a "the winner is the one who dies with the most" type of thinking. Anyhoo, this is the opening track/mini concept piece that consists of five songs within. Quite a pretty and uplifting suite of music that works in such a way that the listener's attention is kept throughout its entirety.      Watch a full live performance on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Rammste...

6914. Les Claypool's Duo De Twang - Man in the Box

Image
From: Four Foot Shack ; Year: 2014; Genre: Folk/Country Got this album the other day and have been bemused and entertained to say the least. Duo De Twang is a weird side-project by Primus frontman and soundtrack maker extraordinare Les Claypool and his longtime friend and guitarist for the band M.I.R.V.: Bryan Kehoe. Everything they do is stripped-back and folk/country covers and original material. Anyway, this has to be one of the most unique covers of the Alice in Chains classic grunge standard, and they do it as weirdly as you would expect.   Hear Man in the Box on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Queen - Don't Try Suicide     My song pick 2 years ago today: Robin Trower - The Fool and Me     My song pick 3 years ago today: Jerry Reed - When You're Hot, You're Hot   My song pick 4 years ago today: Billy Joel - Turn Around   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Bertha Butt Encounters Vadar ...

6897. Bwncath - Barti Ddu

Image
From: Bwncath ; Year: 2017; Genre: Folk Rock Discovered this Welsh band the other day, and as always, I love anything different, which Bwncath definitely fits. From wot I understand Bwncath in the Welsh language translates as Buzzard, hence the band's logo I suppose. Anyway, I know absolutely no Welsh in either written or spoken form, which they sing in, however, from wot I have read, this track is about the famous Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts , (aka: Black Bart), who was the most successful buccaneer of the golden age of piracy. On this one they idealize the exploits and stories of the long-dead countryman. I really like the music, especially the reverb-heavy surf style guitar that adds a lot to the overall folk rock sound of the band.   Hear Barti Ddu on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship - Home/Have You Seen the Stars Tonight     My song pick 2 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Backstabber  ...

6896. Candlebox - Sweet Summertime

Image
From: Love Stories & Other Musings ; Year; 2012; Genre: Alternative Rock/Pop Rock Though I wouldn't describe this summer as "sweet," (more like dry, hot and smoky, at least here), we are now fully into what is known by the idiom: "Dog Days of Summer." The etymology actually was referring to the star Sirius , which is the brightest star as view from Earth and the fact that it rises with the sun and thus returns to the night sky during this time of year is the connection. Being that it is catalogued as the alpha star in the constellation Canis Majoris, (the big dog), it is also known as the "Dog Star." Anyway, I digress, just felt like picking something from Candlebox today, no other reason. And this track off of their 2012 album  Love Stories & Other Musings just felt like a good fit.    Hear Sweet Summertime on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Cameo - Better Days     My song pick 2 years ago today: Bootsy Collins - Th...

6893. Motörhead - Bye Bye Bitch Bye Bye

Image
From: The Wörld is Yours ; Year: 2011; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal Time for another fast as heck hard rocking song from Lemmy and his band Motörhead. I have said it before, and I'll say it again: I wish to God that I had the same ability to be as unforgivingly eloquent and immune to ridicule as Mr. Ian Kilmister.   Hear Bye Bye Bitch Bye Bye on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Don't Come Running To Me     My song pick 2 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Killing Yourself to Live     My song pick 3 years ago today: Al Di Meola - Atavism of Twilight   My song pick 4 years ago today: Lou Reed - My Red Joystick   My song pick 5 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry About a Thing   My song pick 6 years ago today: Cream - Take it Back   My song pick 7 years ago today: Sweet - Ballroom Blitz My song pick 8 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Don't Let the Blues Get You Down ...

6871. Tesla - Burnout to Fade

Image
From: Simplicity ; Year: 2014; Genre: Hard Rock Tesla's Simplicity album is one that I "leap-frogged" over for no apparent reason. I absolutely love their previous album Forever More and the next album Shock , but just missed out on the one in between. I have to say, it is another case of better late than never, I really like wot I have heard; this is one of my favourites from it. Thematically, this one is quite heavy, dealing with someone who just missed out on what could've been a great relationship. From the narrator's point-of-view this individual rebuffed/strung him on throughout their time knowing one another, but then apparently comes back, expecting the narrator to have just waited endlessly. However, he and time moved on and now wot could've been can never happen. I really love the sound and composition of it; very much in their classic sound. It reminds me a lot of how they sounded back in the day, which is very good in my book.   Hear Burnout to F...

6855. Blancmange - I'm Having a Coffee

Image
From: Blanc Burn ; Year: 2011; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop Finally got to put this one on the other day and all I can say is that it immediately put a smile on my face. There are heavy times where such light and whimsical songs are just wot the doctor ordered so to speak; this is one of them in spades!    Hear I'm Having a Coffee on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Mac Davis - I Believe In Music     My song pick 2 years ago today: Joe Cocker - Something     My song pick 3 years ago today: Johnny Rodriguez - Erez tú   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - More Hot Fun   My song pick 5 years ago today: Cheap Trick - Ain't That a Shame   My song pick 6 years ago today: Marcus Miller - Superspy   My song pick 7 years ago today: Seals & Crofts - Diamond Girl My song pick 8 years ago today: Rick James - Call Me Up My song pick 9 years ago today: Chris Squire - Hold Out Your Hand My song pi...

6804. The Winery Dogs - Regret

Image
From: The Winery Dogs ; Year: 2012; Genre: Blues Rock I really hope these great musicians make some new material; I am aware that each of them have many projects and/or primary bands they are in, but I absolutely love them in this trio. Anyway, this is the final track on their debut album, which is a gorgeous bluesy ballad that shows that they can play mellower and still be the virtuosos that they are.   Hear Regret on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: George Clinton - Pleasures Of Exhaustion (Do It Till I Drop)     My song pick 2 years ago today: Richie Kotzen - Dream of a New Day   My song pick 3 years ago today: Gordon Lightfoot - Rainy Day People   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Thermals - I Might Need You To Kill   My song pick 5 years ago today: IQ - Passing Strangers   My song pick 6 years ago today: Melissa Manchester - Don't Cry Out Loud   My song pick 7 years ago today: Lighthouse - Magic's in th...

6719. Pallas - Monster

Image
From: XXV ; Year: 2011; Genre: Progressive Rock This has to be the most ominous and foreboding songs on this concept album, which is the successor to their classic   Sentinel album. At this point in the story a person is trying to explain the feeling of dread and doom coming to the present-day Earth and a judgment by those in that first allegorical story who warned mankind to not repeat their failures, which they did despite the many warnings.   Hear  Monster on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - High, Y'all     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Who - The Kids Are Alright   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Circle of Love   My song pick 4 years ago today: Tesla - Heaven's Trail (No Way Out )   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ugly Kid Joe - Madman   My song pick 6 years ago today: Lakeside - Shine On (Lift Your Spirit Higher)   My song pick 7 years ago...

6601. Santana - Leave Me Alone

Image
From: Santana IV ; Year: 2016; Genre: Chicano Rock/Latin Rock Discovered this one-off record that featured almost all of the surviving members from the early period of Santana: Santana III and prior. This includes Carlos Santana (of course), Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Michael Shrieve, and Mike Carabello; the rest of the lineup was completed by current members of the band. I really like this classic sound all around, it really takes you back to those revered songs we all love from the band. The only niggling criticism that I personally have is that the sound is overproduced and too clean; it would've been better to reuse older studio equipment and recording techniques in my personal opinion.    Hear Leave Me Alone on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Back to the Family     My song pick 2 years ago today: Klaatu - Hope   My song pick 3 years ago today: Midnight Oil - We Resist   My song pick 4 years ago today: T...

6574. Wolfmother - Higher

Image
From: Rock'n'Roll Baby ; Year: 2019; Genre: Metal/Hard Rock Dang, September is halfway over... just seemed like it started, oh well. Anyway, I just felt like listening to something from the Aussie heavy metal band Wolfmother again. Don't know why, but I do not know why I have not given this album a listen prior. Glad I did though; I really like this single from it in all its retro metal glory.      Hear Higher on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Hawkwind - The Iron Dream     My song pick 2 years ago today: LaBelle - Lady Marmalade   My song pick 3 years ago today: Foreigner - The Damage Is Done   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blancmange - Waves   My song pick 5 years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - Bedrock Anthem My song pick 6 years ago today: Jerry Reed - Miller's Cave My song pick 7 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Yum Yum Tree My song pick 8 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Yo...

6561. Glass Hammer - Roll For Initiative

Image
From: Chronomonaut ; Year: 2018; Genre: Progressive Rock Had the prog/rock band Glass Hammer come on while on the road yesterday; apparently I have only chosen one other track from the band, so why not make it two? You can hear a lot of influences across the board, but definitely not derivative; quite a great sound.   Hear Roll For Initiative on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Travelin' Band     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Drifters - This Magic Moment   My song pick 3 years ago today: Old Metropolitan Band - Summertime   My song pick 4 years ago today: Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know   My song pick 5 years ago today: Balance - Ride the Wave   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Black Hearted Woman My song pick 7 years ago today: Joe Jackson - Breaking Us In Two My song pick 8 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 375 - Chorale Lobt Gott,...

6523. Steeleye Span - Cruel Brother

Image
From: Dodgy Bastards ; Year: 2016; Genre: Folk Rock/Progressive Rock Been enjoying this record a lot lately; reminds me a lot of the classic material. This track is their rendition of the traditional Child Ballad Cruel Brother . As with many of these ballads catalogued by Child, this one is quite dark and tragic. I really like the way they arranged the music not only to be more driving and intense, but to really bring the emotions to the surface.   Hear Cruel Brother on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Herb Alpert - Aranjuez (Mon Amour)     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Pointer Sisters - Going Down Slowly   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - The Lark in the Morning   My song pick 5 years ago today: Black 47 - Red Hugh   My song pick 6 years ago today: Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut My song pick 7 years ago today: The Steve Miller...

6512. The Winery Dogs - The Dying

Image
From: The Winery Dogs ; Year: 2013; Genre: Hard Rock Glad I finally got the entire album; this hidden gem just blew me away. In my opinion it is the best track on the record and really speaks to me personally across the board. Ritchie Kotzen especially shines here both as a guitarist and as lead vocalist; you can really hear Jimi Hendrix's emotive blues style influence on him on both instances.   Hear The Dying on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Automat - The Advance     My song pick 2 years ago today: Crowded House - Never Been The Same   My song pick 3 years ago today: Elton John - This Song Has No Title   My song pick 4 years ago today: Tin Tin - Toast and Marmalade for Tea   My song pick 5 years ago today: Funkadelic - Stink Finger   My song pick 6 years ago today: April Wine - Crash and Burn My song pick 7 years ago today: Foreigner - Cold As Ice My song pick 8 years ago today: Rush - Everyday Glory My s...

6490. Waylander - Of Fear and Fury

Image
From: Kindred Spirits ; Year: 2012; Genre: Celtic Folk Metal Had some music from this album come on whilst driving around the other day. I clearly remember when this record came out back in 2012; quickly became my favourite from the band.     Hear Of Fear and Fury on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Trammps - Zing! 6423. Wolfmother - City Lights

Image
From: Victorious ; Year: 2016; Genre: Heavy Metal/Psychedelia Whilst much of Wolfmother's sound is derivative, they sure do pick the best to call up in a postmodern way. I just wish more acts would call upon their real talent, like Wolfmother does today.   Hear City Lights on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Mac Davis - Lucas Was a Redneck   My song pick 2 years ago today: Carmen - People Dressed in Black   My song pick 3 years ago today: Boston - We're Ready   My song pick 4 years ago today: Alestorm - Treasure Island   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Human League - Do or Die   My song pick 6 years ago today: Humble Pie - Get Down To It My song pick 7 years ago today: King Crimson - Exiles My song pick 8 years ago today: Soundgarden - By Crooked Steps My song pick 9 years ago today: Brave Belt - Never Comin' Home My song pick 10 years ago today: Marillion - The Uninvited Guest My song pick 11 years ago today: ...

6391. Neil Young and Promise of the Real - Already Great

Image
From: The Visitor ; Year: 2017; Genre: Blues Rock/Hard Rock After enjoying some of his music in the other day, cranking the sound sky high, thought I would choose a track from one of his albums that I was not acquainted with yet. This is the first song on the record and is very much in his highly noted style across the board.   Hear Already Great on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Ladies   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Weirditude   My song pick 3 years ago today: Mott the Hoople - (Do You Remember) The Saturday Gigs   My song pick 4 years ago today: Luther - Everybody Rejoice   My song pick 5 years ago today: Wishbone Ash - Vas Dis   My song pick 6 years ago today: Journey - Spaceman My song pick 7 years ago today: Van Halen - And the Cradle Will Rock... 6389. Flogging Molly - Crushed (Hostile Nations)

Image
From: Life Is Good ; Year: 2017; Genre: Celtic Rock/Punk/Folk Rock Happy St. Patty's Day once more! Not too entirely sure in which nations it is celebrated, but I do know it is usually celebrated in nations with a lot of people with Irish ancestry and I believe it is a proper Holiday/Feast celebrated by Catholics. Anyway, as usual am picking a song that is at least somewhat apropos for the occasion. I've only chosen a single track from the band Flogging Molly before, so here is another.   Hear Crushed (Hostile Nations) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Waylander - Kindred Spirits   My song pick 2 years ago today: Black 47 - Land Of DeValera   My song pick 3 years ago today: Frank Mackey & The Keltic Cowboys - Rocky Road to Dublin   My song pick 4 years ago today: Black 47 - Bodhráns On The Brain   My song pick 5 years ago today: Waylander - The Vernal Dance   My song pick 6 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Dublin My song...
