5796. Alice in Chains - Hate to Feel

Image
From: Dirt ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge After hearing a song from this album in a movie I was watching it got me kind of sentimental; I had to pick another one from it today. Hate to Feel really exemplifies that slow, de-tuned, and heavy sound that really put them on the map; hard to believe that it has been over 30 years since it came out... boy, tempus fugit indeed.   Hear Hate to Feel on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Midnight Oil - Sell My Soul   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ohio Players - Love Rollercoaster   My song pick 3 years ago today: Fairport Convention - Expletive Delighted   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Hollies - On a Carousel My song pick 5 years ago today: The Guess Who - Flying on the Ground is Wrong My song pick 6 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Warakurna My song pick 7 years ago today: The Outfield - Your Love My song pick 8 years ago today: Jefferson Starship - Jane My song pick 9 years ago today: Deep Purple

5795. Seals & Crofts - Hummingbird

Image
From: Summer Breeze ; Year: 1972; Genre: Folk Rock/Soft Rock Haven't the foggiest as to why I have Seals & Crofts on my mind today, but I always take it as a sign I should choose one from the artist(s). I believe this was the second single from their Summer Breeze record after the title track, which was a pretty big hit.    Hear Hummingbird on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Zapp - Computer Love   My song pick 2 years ago today: Primus - The Ol' Diamondback Sturgeon (Fisherman Chronicles, Part 3)   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Tubes - Talk To Ya Later   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Kinks - Good Day My song pick 5 years ago today: Elton John - Bennie and the Jets My song pick 6 years ago today: Stuart Hamm - Radio Free Albemuth My song pick 7 years ago today: Central Line - Walking Into Sunshine My song pick 8 years ago today: Zakk Wylde - Way Beyond Empty My song pick 9 years ago today: XTC - Travels in Nihilon My song pick 10 year

5794. War - War Drums

Image
From: War ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Soul/Jazz/R&B Hurrying about today and have to exercise a little brevity with my choice on this Funky Friday. Normally I make an effort not to pick two songs by the same band back-to-back, but it's always a great time to go with something from such a great band I really love such as War.    Hear War Drums on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Sam & Dave - You Don't Know Like I Know   My song pick 2 years ago today: Black 47 - Livin' in America   My song pick 3 years ago today: Lenny LeBlanc - Dance Around the Campfire   My song pick 4 years ago today: Georges Bizet - Carmen Overture My song pick 5 years ago today: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Helpless My song pick 6 years ago today: Rose Royce - Car Wash My song pick 7 years ago today: Camel - Never Let Go My song pick 8 years ago today: Jerry Reed - The Legend My song pick 9 years ago today: Curved Air - Heaven (Never Seemed So Far Away) My song

5793. War - All Day Music

Image
From: Greatest Hits ; Year: 1977; Genre: Jazz/Soul Finally getting warm out there after a very cold winter and a damp and dreary early spring and I happened to have the track that is the A-side of this single, Summer , playing in my mind today, so I decided that picking the B-side, which is a very complimentary song in the same vein, would be apropos. Just a mellow bossa nova style jazz based track with the exquisite, enjoyable music that War is known for.   Hear All Day Music on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Side By Side   My song pick 2 years ago today: Sly & The Family Stone - Shine It On   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - We Hold On   My song pick 4 years ago today: Tee Set - Ma Belle Amie My song pick 5 years ago today: Curved Air - Phantasmagoria My song pick 6 years ago today: Roxy Music - Out of the Blue My song pick 7 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Heavy Metal: The Black and Silver My song pick 8 years ago today

5792. Accept - Bulletproof

Image
From: Objection Overruled ; Year: 1993; Genre: Metal Just started to listen to Accept's Objection Overruled album from the early '90s and am really enjoying it. This track in particular caught my attention with its, (to my ears at least), Judas Priest meets AC/DC sound; Udo Dirkschneider's vocals were at a noticeable peak here.   Hear Bulletproof on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Mel McDaniel - Bordertown Woman   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Main Ingredient - You've Got To Take It (If You Want It)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - Heretic   My song pick 4 years ago today: Black 47 - Hard Times My song pick 5 years ago today: Rainbow - Stone Cold My song pick 6 years ago today: For Squirrels - Disenchanted My song pick 7 years ago today: AC/DC - Jailbreak My song pick 8 years ago today: R.E.O. 5791. Jigsaw - Prizefighter

Image
From: 12 Chapters of Love ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock/Pop Kind of neat and slightly mellower track from the band, just seemed like a good choice on this otherwise quiet and laid back Tuesday.   Hear Prizefighter on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Molly Hatchet - Boogie No More   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe   My song pick 3 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Masters of the Galaxy   My song pick 4 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Legend of the Astral Hammer My song pick 5 years ago today: John Fogerty - Rockin' All Over the World My song pick 6 years ago today: Iain Matthews - Gimme An Inch Girl My song pick 7 years ago today: Marmalade - I See the Rain My song pick 8 years ago today: Maddy Prior - Long Shadows My song pick 9 years ago today: Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - Let Me Be the One My song pick 10 years ago today: Finntroll - Ett Norrskensdåd My song pick 11 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV Anh. 1

5790. Earth, Wind & Fire - Dance, Dance, Dance

Image
From: Dance, Dance, Dance (single) ; Year: 2012 (1983); Genre: Soul/Funk Another song/band I had on my mind and had to pick it, that is all. While Dance, Dance, Dance didn't get an official release by the band until apparently 2012 as a downloadable single, it had its beginnings back in 1983 as part of the soundtrack to the cult classic movie Rock & Rule , which, of course did not do well at the time. However, the film has continued to garner attention since and this song in particular was among the biggest bright spots, but wot would you expect from E,W&F? After all they were also the best part of the flop Sgt. Pepper's film a few years prior as well, so they are well experienced at propping up under-performing cinema.   Hear Dance, Dance, Dance on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Offspring - Bad Habit   My song pick 2 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Antarctica   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steely Dan - Black Cow   My song pick 4 years ago toda

5789. The Kinks - Susannah's Still Alive

Image
From: Something Else by the Kinks (Deluxe Collector's Edition) ; Year: 1967; Genre: Rock Thought I would pick this one from Dave Davies that appeared on special editions of this album; it's quite cool to hear Dave front the band with his song whilst treating us to his lead vocals.   Hear Susanna's Still Alive on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)   My song pick 2 years ago today: Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - High As Apple Pie (Slice I and II)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Mr. Bungle - Platypus   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Sir James the Rose My song pick 5 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - My Friends My song pick 6 years ago today: Hot Butter - Telstar My song pick 7 years ago today: Nazareth - Hair of the Dog My song pick 8 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Pony Boy My song pick 9 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - Games People Pl

5788. Debbie Harry - Chrome

Image
From: KooKoo ; Year: 1981; Genre: New Wave/Rock/Pop No reason whatsoever that I am choosing this song other than upon listening to some early solo material from Debbie Harry I just decided to choose one. Whilst it might be kind of a sound that was more or less a zeitgeist of the late 70s/early 80s, at the time this was cutting edge for mainstream music and was very much a trailblazing sound. I really love the mix of the different styles musically that came out really well.   Hear Chrome on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Funkadelic - Maggot Brain   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jim Steinman - Left in the Dark   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Flat Broke Love   My song pick 4 years ago today: 4 Non Blondes - Spaceman My song pick 5 years ago today: Black 47 - I Got Laid On James Joyce's Grave My song pick 6 years ago today: Queen - Keep Yourself Alive My song pick 7 years ago today: Brass Construction - Changin' My song

5787. Rick & The Entire World - No No No Momerto

Image
From: Movements ; Year: 2005; Genre: Funk/Soul Recently I have been getting back to the first album in Tobias Kirmayer's series of funk compilations; I knew this track was a Funky Friday Pick indeed. Don't know really anything about Rick & The Entire World outside this song, including when it was recorded, but judging by the sound I'd say early 1970s or late 1960s; could be older too. Anyway, this is a fun funk track with a lot of soul thrown it and a great groove; sure to get you dancing.   Hear No No No Momerto on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Faith No More - Stripsearch   My song pick 2 years ago today: Depeche Mode - World in my Eyes   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Firing Line   My song pick 4 years ago today: Gerry Rafferty - Island My song pick 5 years ago today: White Zombie - Black Sunshine My song pick 6 years ago today: The Headhunters - Actual Proof My song pick 7 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Old Ghosts

5786. Robin Trower - Too Rolling Stoned

Image
From: Bridge of Sighs ; Year: 1974; Genre: Blues Rock/Hard Rock Had Robin Trower's epic Bridge of Sighs record on my mind once more and of course felt like picking another song from it. I just love all the blues he infuses with that hard rock edge; that guitar solo really is a nice touch to this classic track.   Hear Too Rolling Stoned on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Skid Row - Riot Act   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Jack-A-Lynn   My song pick 3 years ago today: Madness - Our House   My song pick 4 years ago today: Chicago - Beginnings My song pick 5 years ago today: Frijid Pink - Rainbow Rider My song pick 6 years ago today: Savatage - Summer's Rain My song pick 7 years ago today: John Denver - Everyday My song pick 8 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Heartbreaker My song pick 9 years ago today: Carmen - I've Been Crying My song pick 10 years ago today: Banchee - 38 My song pick 11 years ago today: Xerath - Unite to Defy

5785. Carmen - People Dressed in Black

Image
From: Dancing on a Cold Wind ; Year: 1974; Genre: Progressive Rock/Flamenco Rock This one comes from the second side of their album, which is titled: Remembrances (Recuerdos de Espana) that appears to be somewhat of a novella sized concept album. People Dressed in Black comes just passed the midpoint; they really use all the delicate power from the flamenco to sell the the dark and brooding feeling throughout the song. The vocal work is one of the best aspects of it; the music kind of takes a supporting role. I really love the wailing harmonies and the musical "jabs" that go along with it.   Hear People Dressed in Black on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Boston - We're Ready   My song pick 2 years ago today: Alestorm - Treasure Island   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Human League - Do or Die   My song pick 4 years ago today: Humble Pie - Get Down To It My song pick 5 years ago today: King Crimson - Exiles My song pick 6 years ago today: Soundgar

5784. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - One Rainy Wish

Image
From: Axis: Bold as Love ; Year: 1967; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock I find myself lately really listening close to every aspect of Jimi Hendrix's songs whilst I just let the record play and I can tell ya, there's always something new and truly remarkable, it would seem, that catches my ear. Without a doubt, as a musician, singer, songwriter, poet, etc... you cannot overstate what he and his bandmates did for music. This is another one of those songs after you get done listening to it you go back and realize that it's just over three-and-a-half minutes in length, but you could swear that it was over ten minutes; there's not one weak point of this beautiful track.   Hear One Rainy Wish on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: April Wine - Cat's Claw   My song pick 2 years ago today: Alphaville - Big In Japan   My song pick 3 years ago today: Primus - Mary the Ice Cube   My song pick 4 years ago today: Mastodon - Andromeda My song pick 5 years ago tod

5783. Kenny Rogers & the First Edition - Something's Burning

Image
From: Something's Burning ; Year: 1970; Genre: Rock/Country Had some of the music from this band that predated Kenny Rogers' country superstardom that in its own right was extremely successful with a handful of hits. From what I understand, wot kept this track from really getting huge in the U.S. was that it was thought as "too sensual" for broadcast, but eventually got traction after it hit big in Europe and the U.K..  There is something about the quieter parts of the song as it builds that really takes it over that edge to make it the great track that it is.   Hear Something's Burning on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Queen - I Can't Live With You   My song pick 2 years ago today: Deep Purple - Throw My Bones   My song pick 3 years ago today: Foghat - Night Shift My song pick 4 years ago today: Rammstein - Los My song pick 5 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Mirrors My song pick 6 years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Pine Martin's Ji

5782. Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy

Image
From: Primitive Love ; Year: 1985; Genre: Pop/R&B I have continually been amazed at how certain stimuli, such as sounds like music can lie dormant in the back of our minds for decades and all of a sudden start playing in your head just like you're listening to the radio. Again, with today's song pick such happened; I absolutely cannot remember the last time I heard it, has been many years though. I was almost 100% positive that it was performed by either Gloria Estefan or the band she was in: Miami Sound Machine. Checked just be sure, and I was correct.  Back then, throughout the mid-late 1980s, both her and the band were huge; their music was literally everywhere, and of course her solo career has continued that success. Anyway, if you were born back then this was one of the songs that was impossible to miss; you had to hear it. I love the way they blended R&B/Soul sounds with their Latin pop in this one.   Hear Bad Boy on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago toda

5781. Hawkwind - Jack of Shadows

Image
From: PXR5 ; Year: 1979; Genre: Space Rock/New Wave Been thinking and listening to a lot of Robert Calvert era Hawkwind recently; this tune come from the final studio album with him. Jack of Shadows is among their songs that are much more accessible to the "pop" listener and still has a lot of musical technicality to keep the regulars happy as well.   Hear Jack of Shadows on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: George Clinton - Maximumisness   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby & The Range - Look Out Any Window   My song pick 3 years ago today: Marillion - This Strange Engine   My song pick 4 years ago today: 10cc - Good Morning Judge My song pick 5 years ago today: The Moody Blues - I Know You're Out There Somewhere My song pick 6 years ago today: Fletcher Henderson and Louis Armstrong - Money Blues My song pick 7 years ago today: Weather Report - Palladíum My song pick 8 years ago today: Percy Sledge - When a Man Loves a Woman My s

5780. The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Hallucinations

Image
From: Butt of Course... ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk/Soul Been a real busy last couple of days and am so pleased that it is now Friday! Anyway, this one kind of takes you by surprise when listening to the record being that, for the most part, it is a funny and uplifting disc overall, but this one becomes quite serious subject matter wise; it really shows Jimmy Castor and his Bunch's diverse and masterful musical range.   Hear Hallucinations on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Kinks - Sleepwalker   My song pick 2 years ago today: Carmen - The Horseman   My song pick 3 years ago today: Daniel Lanois - That's The Way It Is   My song pick 4 years ago today: Raspberries - Go All The Way My song pick 5 years ago today: The Thermals - Test Pattern My song pick 6 years ago today: Kool & The Gang - Jungle Boogie My song pick 7 years ago today: The Beatles - For You Blue My song pick 8 years ago today: Boston - I Had a Good Time My song pick 9 years ago tod

5779. Sweet - Call Me

Image
From: Cut Above the Rest ; Year: 1979; Genre: Rock/Glam Rock Had another song from another band in mind for today's pick, but had another case of another band's music permeating my mind. This track was from their first record without original vocalist Brian Connolly and is a wee bit different from their popular sound. As this incarnation as a power trio they shared duties at lead vocals, which obviously altered it stylistically, but also the musical arrangements changed a bit as well.   Hear Call Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lou Rawls - Groovy People   My song pick 2 years ago today: Marillion - Dry Land   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ray Davies - The Getaway   My song pick 4 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Keep On Chooglin' My song pick 5 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Luther the Anthropoid (Ape Man) My song pick 6 years ago today: Pallas - Falling Down My song pick 7 years ago today: Gordon Lightfoot - Ca

5778. Jim Croce - Speedball Tucker

Image
From: Life and Times ; Year: 1973; Genre: Folk Rock Had this song in particular on my brain for the last couple of days, you know the rest. With some songwriting artists, like Jim Croce, I cannot fathom how their art just seemed to flow so easily and became something still so profound all these decades and years later. Ones like him were taken away far too quickly; you could only dream where music would be if he got to live longer. Anyway, Speedball Tucker has always been one that perks my ears up upon hearing this riff-heavy raucous folk song. With just 2:30 this one gives you everything you could want in a song; without a doubt it is a "transistor glamour." This is another track that contains one of my absolute favourite lines: "...and 95 was the route you was on, it was not the speed limit sign." Makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it.   Hear Speedball Tucker on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic   My song pick 2 yea

5777. Soundgarden - Tighter & Tighter

Image
From: Down on the Upside ; Year: 1997; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge Getting back to normal since arriving home from the coast yesterday; had Soundgarden on the ol' cabeza and, well, you know the rest. Down on the Upside is yet another record that I have grown to love the more I listen to it; it's one of those albums that you put on track one and just let it play through. One of their best efforts I would hazard to say. This is the longest song from it, which makes it all the better in my opinion; I just love the use of the Leslie Amplifier on it, which adds another neat sound.   Hear Tighter & Tighter on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Damn Yankees - Runaway   My song pick 2 years ago today: Camel - Lies   My song pick 3 years ago today: Hawkwind - 65 Million Years Ago   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Police - Don't Stand Too Close To Me My song pick 5 years ago today: Mastodon - The Wolf is Loose My song pick 6 years ago today: Steely Dan
