5447. Tesla - Edison's Medicine

Image
From: Psychotic Supper ; Year: 1991; Genre: Hard Rock The final song of the month for my blog. For some reason I felt like listening to some of the earlier albums from the band Tesla; I I believe that I have yet to choose one from their Psychotic Supper album, so now is a good time. Edison's Medicine really has their mainstream sound in spades, very late-'80s.   Hear Edison's Medicine on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Grateful Dead - Throwing Stones   My song pick 2 years ago today: Redbone - When You Got Trouble   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Then Came the Last Days of May My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Audition My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Driving Song My song pick 6 years ago today: Bon Jovi - Dry County My song pick 7 years ago today: Soundgarden - Storm My song pick 8 years ago today: Megadeth - Go To Hell My song pick 9 years ago today: The Scorpions - Loving You Sunday Morning

5446. The Grateful Dead - Foolish Heart

Image
From: Built to Last ; Year: 1989; Genre: Rock Another Memorial Day upon us; the month of May really breezed by, or so it would seem. Anyway, as always , I'm choosing a song from The Grateful Dead for the occasion. This one is the main hit single off of their final "official" album as The Grateful Dead. Foolish Heart is a good toe-tapping track to sit back and enjoy or dance to; the Latin beats with a tinge of jazz really make it a fun song.   Hear Foolish Heart on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Robert John - Sad Eyes   My song pick 2 years ago today: Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed - Summertime   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Still Burnin' My song pick 4 years ago today: Brave Belt - Scarecrow My song pick 5 years ago today: Roman Holliday - Don't Try to Stop It My song pick 6 years ago today: Grateful Dead - Dark Star My song pick 7 years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Rock it My song pick 8 years ago today: Ear

5445. Depeche Mode - A Question of Time

Image
From: Black Celebration ; Year: 1986; Genre: Synthpop/Dark Wave The other day I learned that Depeche Mode founding member Andy Fletcher passed away at the young age of 60 years. It seems as if more and more of my favourite artists have been dying over the last few years; kinda sad, but I guess such is life....  Here's one from my favourite era of the band, which demonstrates their unique take of the synthpop/new wave electronic sound.   Hear A Question of Time on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Veins   My song pick 2 years ago today: Weather Report - The Moors   My song pick 3 years ago today: Stratovarius - S.O.S. 5444. Yes - Onward

Image
From: Tormato ; Year: 1978; Genre: Progressive Rock/Symphonic Rock Had a live version of this track come on whilst driving, and with the recent passing of drummer extraordinaire Alan White I thought it'd be a great time to choose another one from Yes. This is quite a beautiful song in many ways; I really love how they blend the progressive sound of the band with symphonic elements.   Hear Onward on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Stevie Wonder - I Wish My song pick 2 years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - The Gangster is Back   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pearl Jam - Oceans My song pick 4 years ago today: The Grateful Dead - Mountains of the Moon My song pick 5 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Not My Cross to Bear My song pick 6 years ago today: Savatage - Prelude to Madness My song pick 7 years ago today: Traffic - Rock 'n' Roll Stew Parts 1&2 My song pick 8 years ago today: Chris Squire - Lucky Seven My song p

5443. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Green Heaven

Image
From: Red Hot Chili Peppers ; Year: 1984; Genre: Funk/Hard Rock/Rap If memory serves me correctly, I believe this is the first time I have chosen a song from the RHCP's self-titled debut album. Green Heaven really has a very raw version of the funky rock music style they helped to pioneer.    Hear Green Heaven on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Quartet   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rainbow - Fool For The Night   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Grateful Dead - Unbroken Chain My song pick 4 years ago today: The (Dixie) Dregs - Kat Food My song pick 5 years ago today: King Crimson - Fracture My song pick 6 years ago today: Sly & The Family Stone - Luv n' Haight My song pick 7 years ago today: Outlaws - Green Grass & High Tides My song pick 8 years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Jungle Love My song pick 9 years ago today: Grateful Dead - China Cat Sunflower My song pick 10 years ago today: Nightwish - The Carpenter

5442. Huey Lewis & the News - The Heart of Rock & Roll

Image
From: Sports ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rock There are quite a few songs that I like, but will not really get into an argument with people who dislike or hate that said song, this is one of them. I've always kind of liked it, especially the hard-driving choruses, but as stated, it's just not a full-on favourite of mine. That being said, I believe that this track is unfairly maligned by critics and haters and should be just enjoyed at face value.   Hear The Heart of Rock & Roll on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: War - Why Can't We Be Friends?   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Sail Away   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - Ty Cobb My song pick 4 years ago today: ZZ Top - Got Me Under Pressure My song pick 5 years ago today: Audioslave - Exploder My song pick 6 years ago today: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Still the Same My song pick 7 years ago today: Alestorm - Magnetic North My song pick 8 years ago

5441. The Youngbloods - Get Together

Image
From: The Youngbloods , Year: 1966; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Folk Rock This is another one I recently heard, and was kind of surprised that I had not picked it someday in the past. While many might dislike and/or make fun of such an open, honest, and heartfelt song with such a great message, I definitely can say we need more of this optimism today; so much anger and hate out there....   Hear Get Together on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Heart - Never   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Nice - Country Pie/Brandenburg Concerto No. 6   My song pick 3 years ago today: Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway My song pick 4 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - Opening (Statement)/He Lives On (Story About the Last Journey of a Warrior) My song pick 5 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Spacebase My song pick 6 years ago today: ABBA - Two for the Price of One My song pick 7 years ago today: Grateful Dead - Dire Wolf My song pick 8 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Queen

5440. Toronto - All I Need

Image
From: Girls Night Out ; Year: 1983; Genre: Hard Rock Things have been super-busy lately and I have not had a lot of time to think about which song to choose. However, I happened to have some of Toronto's music come on my phone the other day and I decided that I would choose another from the band. Whilst this one has a definite '80s hard rock sound to it, I think the dated sound really is a positive for the song in my opinion; the high energy especially gives an excellent danceable aspect to it.   Hear All I Need on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Queen - It's Late   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - Don't Let It Show   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Commons Brawl My song pick 4 years ago today: Maddy Prior - Catseyes My song pick 5 years ago today: Megadeth - Conquer or Die! 5439. Gloryhammer - On the Wings of a Rainbow

Image
From: Legends From Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex ; Year: 2019; Genre: Power Metal/Symphonic Metal Was having some fun listening to some more epic fantasy-inspired metal from the one and only Gloryhammer. This was a bonus track off of their most recent album, and you can definitely hear influence of bands such as Iron Maiden on this one.   Hear On the Wings of a Rainbow on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Wishbone Ash - Drive   My song pick 2 years ago today: Queensrÿche - The Mission   My song pick 3 years ago today: C.W. 5438. Alice in Chains - The One You Know

Image
From: Rainier Fog ; Year: 2018; Genre: Alternative Metal It's a rather busy day today, and I have been really in the mood for some Alice in Chains music, especially from their most recent record. This is among my favourites from it; I really like the classic sound and feel they use in it.   Hear The One You Know on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Yes - Going for the One   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dayton Sidewinders - Phoenix   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Police - Synchronicity I My song pick 4 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Dogs My song pick 5 years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - See You on the Other Side My song pick 6 years ago today: Queensrÿche - If I Could Change it All My song pick 7 years ago today: Kleeer - You Got Me Rockin' My song pick 8 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Test of Time My song pick 9 years ago today: Deborah Harry and Robin Zander - Send Love Through My song pick 10 years ago today: Megaherz - Jagdzeit My s

5437. Aphrodite's Child - The Four Horsemen

Image
From: 666 ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock The other day I found out that composer extraordinaire Vangelis passed away at the age of 79. He is most likely best-known for writing and performing the scores of Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner amongst many other films and documentaries. Other than the fore-mentioned movies my main exposure to Vangelis' work was the final album from one of his early bands/projects: Aphrodite's Child , 666 . The Four Horsemen is one of the songs of notoriety from the record, which, of course, was a concept album based on The Apocalypse of John . It's a great dynamic track with some great musical ideas throughout and is one that is actually quite accessible to most casual listeners; the song and entire album makes for some awesome "headphone music."   Hear The Four Horsemen on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Gap Band - You Dropped a Bomb on Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies -

5436. Bootsy's Rubber Band - The Pinocchio Theory

Image
From: Ahh... The Name is Bootsy , Baby!; Year: 1977; Genre: Funk Been a busy last couple of days and am finally getting to actually sit down and go over some music and not just that which has been on my mind, and/or something I recently heard. Anyway, wot a perfect pick for a Funky Friday ? A great track from Bootsy and his band of renown that is in and of itself a reference to George Clinton's character from P-Funk mythos Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk who appears in many songs from Parliament-Funkadelic; yep... there's no touching funk this hot.   Hear The Pinocchio Theory on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ugly Kid Joe - Come Tomorrow   My song pick 2 years ago today: Blackmore's Night - Play Minstrel Play   My song pick 3 years ago today: Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Acres Wild My song pick 5 years ago today: Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose My song pick 6 years ago today: Bootsy's Rubber Band - Va

5435. Depeche Mode - Behind the Wheel

Image
From: Music for the Masses ; Year: 1987; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop Was it a day or so ago? I was enjoying listening to some Depeche Mode and they've been on my mind off and on ever since. Behind the Wheel is definitely a product of its time with that very danceable '80s synthpop sound, and a very interesting song to boot across the board. It is really fascinating for me personally, that back then, when this music was brand new I was more or less indifferent to it, but now, decades later, I'm really enjoying hearing the "soundtrack" of my life from that time period once again.   Hear Behind the Wheel on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Travelin' Man   My song pick 2 years ago today: Camel - Highways of the Sun   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Guess Who - Three More Days My song pick 4 years ago today: Heart - White Lightning & Wine My song pick 5 years ago today: Audioslave - Nothing Left to Say But Goodbye My song

5434. Faster Pussycat - Nonstop to Nowhere

Image
From: Whipped! ; Year: 1992; Genre: Hard Rock Here's another band that's been on my mind for the last little bit; it's a shame that they never got huge, they had some great material. Anyway, most would probably remember Faster Pussycat for their anthemesque hit song House of Pain , but they did have a few other singles out there, just not on the same level. This is a rather fun track to listen to with a great chorus to sing along to whilst playing the record.   Hear Nonstop to Nowhere on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Mountain Labyrinth   My song pick 2 years ago today: David Bowie - Star   My song pick 3 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Standing in the Rain My song pick 4 years ago today: David Bowie - Five Years My song pick 5 years ago today: Queen - Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley My song pick 6 years ago today: Don Henley - Sunset Grill My song pick 7 years ago today: Bad Compan

5433. The Stylistics - Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)

Image
From: Thank You Baby ; Year: 1975; Genre: Soul/R&B/Disco The Stylistics are one of the many soul bands that I grew up hearing a lot of and one I still like a lot, obviously. This one has the definite mid 1970s post-Thom Bell era sound to it, but the guys do an awesome job as ever with the powerful and harmonious vocals they are known for.   Hear Can't Give You Anything (But My Love) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Soundgarden - Somewhere   My song pick 2 years ago today: Joni Mitchell - God Must Be a Boogie Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: Funkadelic - Uncle Jam My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - Looking in the Future My song pick 5 years ago today: Stratovarius - Lifetime in a Moment My song pick 6 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Nightmare My song pick 7 years ago today: Steve Vai - Rescue Me or Bury Me My song pick 8 years ago today: The Police - Spirits in the Material World My song pick 9 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Silver

5432. The Mamas & the Papas - Monday Monday

Image
From: If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears ; Year: 1966; Genre: Folk Rock/Pop Start of yet another work week... this was one of the songs going through my mind this morning, and since I have only chosen one song from The Mamas & the Papas thus far, I thought I would go ahead and make it my pick today. Anyway, as normal for the group, the vocals are top-notch and the music being performed by the one and only Wrecking Crew , it is excellent as well.   Hear Monday Monday on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Warrior's Return   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dio - Hungry For Heaven   My song pick 3 years ago today: Argent - Pure Love My song pick 4 years ago today: Boz Scaggs - Breakdown Dead Ahead My song pick 5 years ago today: Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction My song pick 6 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Love is Blue My song pick 7 years ago today: B. 5431. Ray Charles - You'll Never Walk Alone

Image
From: Ingredients In A Recipe For Soul ; Year: 1963; Genre: Soul/R&B/Pop This is a very beautiful interpretation of the famous song from Rogers and Hammerstein's musical masterpiece: Carousel . You'll Never Walk Alone has always been a song I have liked a lot, it's quite a powerful and emotion provoking song in its original setting, but in my opinion Ray Charles brings it to yet another level with his spectacular performance.    Hear You'll Never Walk Alone on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Fates Warning - Firefly   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jigsaw - Journey Into Space   My song pick 3 years ago today: Kiss - Heaven's on Fire My song pick 4 years ago today: The Supremes - Stop! 5430. The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)

Image
From: It's Only Rock 'n Roll ; Year: 1974; Genre: Blues Rock/Glam Rock Had this one come on the radio in the car yesterday, you know the rest.... Anyway, this is one of the mainstay hits from The 'Stones that most anybody would recognize within two seconds of it starting. Apparently, it was apparently done through a jam session between Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and members of the band Faces with Keith Richards adding his guitar over that raw recording.   Hear It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Positive Force - We Got The Funk   My song pick 2 years ago today: Everclear - Santa Monica   My song pick 3 years ago today: Icehouse - Electric Blue My song pick 4 years ago today: Jackson Browne - The Load-Out/Stay My song pick 5 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Don't Turn Your Back My song pick 6 years ago today: Band of Horses - Casual Party My song pick 7 years ago today: Bachman & Turner - Neutral

5428. AC/DC - Shot Down In Flames

Image
From: Highway to Hell ; Year: 1979; Genre: Hard Rock Whilst coming home from the theater last night I had some music from AC/DC's first era with original singer Bon Scott and I thought that I would pick one from the band today. Shot Down In Flames is probably my favourite track off of this record, which is of course the last one to feature Bon Scott before his tragic death.   Hear Shot Down In Flames on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Cult - Rain   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ian Hunter - All-American Alien Boy   My song pick 3 years ago today: Duran Duran - Hold Back the Rain My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - Ghost of a Chance My song pick 5 years ago today: Lakeside - Fantastic Voyage My song pick 6 years ago today: Asia - One Step Closer My song pick 7 years ago today: Michael Martin Murphey - Secret Mountain Hideout My song pick 8 years ago today: Rhapsody of Fire - The Mighty Ride of the Firelord My song pick 9 years ago today: Argen

5427. Link Wray - I Got To Ramble (Dedicated to the Memory of Duane Allman)

Image
From: The Link Wray Rumble ; Year: 1974; Genre: Blues Rock Happened to be thinking about the music of Link Wray once again since yesterday; this album in particular I decided to look into. As the title states: this track is done in the style of The Allman Brothers Band in memory of guitar great Duane Allman, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident a few years prior. Link Wray and the rest of the band really show off their musical chops on this one.   Hear I Got To Ramble (Dedicated to the Memory of Duane Allman) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Thermals - Back to the Sea   My song pick 2 years ago today: Little Richard - Long Tall Sally   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby and the Range - Across the River My song pick 4 years ago today: Autograph - Turn Up the Radio My song pick 5 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Two Magicians My song pick 6 years ago today: Genesis - Silent Sun My song pick 7 years ago today: The Winery Dogs - Eleva

5426. Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Don't Walk Away

Image
From: Xanadu (soundtrack) ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock/Soft Rock I have yet to see the film from which this album hails, but have been very much exposed to the music on it from both ELO and Olivia Newton-John. This is one of the songs written as a ballad in the way that only Jeff Lynne and his legendary band could do.   Hear Don't Walk Away on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah - Lake Shore Drive   My song pick 2 years ago today: Laura Branigan - Spanish Eddie   My song pick 3 years ago today: Zapp - Funky Bounce My song pick 4 years ago today: Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart My song pick 5 years ago today: The Verve - Weeping Willow My song pick 6 years ago today: Boston - The Journey/It's Easy My song pick 7 years ago today: Carmen - Shady Lady My song pick 8 years ago today: Nightwish - Nymphomaniac Fantasia My song pick 9 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter My song pick 10 years ago today: The Who - My

5425. Stevie Wonder - My Cherie Amour

Image
From: My Cherie Amour ; Year: 1969; Genre: R&B/Soul/Motown I've been having some of Stevie Wonder's music from this era on my brain lately; as I usually do I am picking another one of his songs. This is a track that I've been meaning to choose for years now; take a couple of Funk Brother alums on rhythm section with a highly talented master singer/songwriter/musician in front and you have the recipe for a classic masterpiece.   Hear My Cherie Amour on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: King Crimson - THRAK   My song pick 2 years ago today: Stone Roses - Fools Gold   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dire Straits - Setting Me Up My song pick 4 years ago today: Buddy Holly - Everyday My song pick 5 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Rupi's Dance My song pick 6 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies - It's All Been Done My song pick 7 years ago today: Woody Guthrie - Hobo's Lullaby My song pick 8 years ago today: David Bowie - Fame My song pick

5424. Focus - Focus 11

Image
From: Focus 11 ; Year: 2018; Genre: Progressive Rock/Jazz Fusion Earlier today whilst playing a racing video game I had my music on shuffle and had Focus' seminal hit Hocus Pocus , which is the song they are most known for here in The 'States, come on and was perfect for the occasion of speeding around a race track. Anyway, it got me in the mood to hear some more from the classic rock band out of The Netherlands, so I decided to check out their most recent offerings and, of course, I immediately went to the longest track on the album, which happened to also be the record's title-track. I really like this instrumental, which oozes an excellent type of jazz fusion mixed with rock.   Hear Focus 11 on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Fleet Foxes - Can I Believe You   My song pick 2 years ago today: Pearl Jam - Retrograde   My song pick 3 years ago today: King Crimson - Epitaph My song pick 4 years ago today: Heart - Bad Animals My song pick 5 years ago today:
