6371. Genesis - Get 'Em Out by Friday

Image
From: Foxtrot ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock Listened to Genesis' Foxtrot album again yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it once more. Got me thinking about Genesis and how, as not amongst the most rabid of fans of the band, but I really enjoy their music a lot, how I never really got into the whole loving/hating one period of the band due to the different comings and goings of band members and thus the contrasting styles from one decade to the next. That being said, they're probably one of the most successful groups to change lead singers and stay on top. Truthfully, I cannot choose between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins; they are both amazing in my book, and Phil is a monster drummer to boot. Personally, I really believe that Peter Gabriel's vocals were at a peak at this point, and it show on this track. Kind of a comedic social commentary on greed, specifically concerning landlords, he uses the Leid format in which he plays the parts of four different characters i...

5967. Genesis - Dancing with the Moonlit Knight

Image
From: Selling England by the Pound ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock/Jazz Fusion You can tell just by listening that the band at this point in their career were really growing musically by pushing themselves beyond their musical limits in both composition and writing. Selling England by the Pound and the previous two albums for me are at the top of one of the many pinnacles of Genesis records of that era. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight has a lot of hallmarks of being the product of being written by a committee, which in this case was the entire band getting together to join their ideas to create a great song.   Hear Dancing with the Moonlit Knight on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Abaddon's Bolero   My song pick 2 years ago today: Chicago - Make Me Smile   My song pick 3 years ago today: April Wine - Comin' Right Down on Top of Me   My song pick 4 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Now or Neve...

5502. Genesis - Counting Out Time

Image
From: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock/Progressive Rock This is among my favourites from the record that would be the "swansong" of the classic prog/rock era of Genesis. It's kind of fitting that both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins would share vocal duties on this, and a few other songs from the album, with the former leaving the band and the latter taking over his singing duties from then on.    Hear Counting Out Time on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Asia - Never Again   My song pick 2 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Go Robot   My song pick 3 years ago today: What Made Milwaukee Famous - Trying to Never Catch Up My song pick 4 years ago today: Van der Graaf Generator - Pilgrims My song pick 5 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There? Image
From: Nursery Cryme ; Year: 1971; Genre: Progressive Rock Bringing another great record to a close today after picking every song off the album. 4723. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill

Image
From: Peter Gabriel 1 (Car) ; Year: 1977; Genre: Progressive Rock It's another day where I heard a song by a certain artist and thought I would pick another one. This time it's Peter Gabriel, and I was kind of surprised I had not chosen this song yet. I love the way they more or less hide the complexity of this song in plain sight so to speak, but if you listen closely to it this one you can definitely hear that complexity. Image
From: From Genesis to Revelation ; Year: 1969; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Progressive Rock I heard some of their early music yesterday and it got me in the mood to hear more of their music from this embryonic period of the band's development. 3828. Peter Gabriel - Red Rain

Image
From: So ; Year: 1986; Genre: Progressive Rock Whilst working in the kitchen yesterday Peter Gabriel's music started playing in my mind, so as always.... I absolutely adore the brooding and tense feeling throughout the song, which comes from his great delivery and emotion in the vocals. For me the rhythm section is the other area that gets me going; the drums and thundering bass just add so much. Hear Red Rain on YouTube. Image
From: Foxtrot ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock Ever since last night when I had the epic piece Supper's Ready playing in my car it got me in the mood to hear the rest of Foxtrot again. 1982 Peter Gabriel - Shock the Monkey

Image
From: Peter Gabriel (Security); Year: 1982; Genre: Rock/New Wave Last night whilst working I had a song in mind for today's pick, but after falling asleep from exhaustion and waking up rather groggy it has escaped me. Anyway, here's one from from Peter Gabriel's fourth album, which was released in 1982: today's song pick number. I have always kind of liked this song if for no other reason but Tony Levin's amazing as always bass playing. Here is the music video clip for Shock The Monkey on YouTube. 1851 Genesis - A Winter's Tale

Image
From: From Genesis to Revelation (Reissue); Year: 1969; Genre: Rock/Pop Since I grew up mostly hearing the Genesis from the '80s early on I never really had any exposure to the material with Peter Gabriel at the microphone. It wasn't until about a decade or so ago that really made an effort to hear Genesis' earlier stuff. I think the first time I heard this early single, which was later added to reissues of their debut album, I was taken aback by the overall "poppy" sound. It's amazing to hear Genesis with a sound similar to many other beat and "top 40" groups of the time period. Hear A Winter's Tale on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Chet Atkins - Drive In My song pick two years ago today: Letzte Instanz - Für Immer Und Ewig My song pick three years ago today: Ian Anderson - A Raft of Penguins My song pick four years ago today: John Denver - Jimmy Newman +

1477 Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes

Image
1477 Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes From: So , Year: 1986 Genre: Rock/Progressive Rock I'm finally getting around to picking this track; I've been meaning to for a while now ever since Arthur picked it on his Song a Day blog a bit ago. It's kind of odd, but I can't really think of a song off the top of my head from Peter Gabriel or from Genesis when he was with the band that I dislike. Hear the studio version on YouTube. Watch a live performance circa '94 on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Something Special My song pick two years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1048 - Brandenburg Concerto No.3 in G-Major My song pick three years ago today: The Buoys - Give Up Your Guns My song pick four years ago today: The Buoys - Timothy +

1376 Genesis - The Musical Box

Image
1376 Genesis - The Musical Box From: Nursery Cryme , Year: 1971 I felt like some classic Genesis from the Peter Gabriel era this morning, so, for no other reason I just put on their Nursery Cryme album. I decided that this rather epic song, which is the first or the album, would be a wonderful pick for the day; this song and album are excellent in so many aspects. Hear The Musical Box on YouTube. Watch a live performance of the song circa '73 on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Savatage - The Dungeons Are Calling My song pick two years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - I'm Alive My song pick three years ago today: The Grateful Dead - Uncle John's Band +

1020 Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer

Image
1020 Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer Been meaning to pick this amazing Peter Gabriel track for quite a while now. This is one of many Peter Gabriel songs that I like; of course seeing the freaky stop-motion music video back in the day helped get me into the song as well. It is one of those songs that is pop enough for the casual masses, but is filled to the brim with all the excellent musicality to tickle the musical connoisseur's ears. It is quite a well-arranged song with a lot of layers going on in it, but Tony Levin's awesome bass line along with the beat that glues the whole song together. Here is the music video on YouTube. Here is a nice live performance circa '93 on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 29 - Cantata No. 29 - Wir Danken Dir, Gott, Wir Danken Dir My song pick two years ago today: Tears For Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love +

891 ( Peter Gabriel - Down To Earth )

Image
891 ( Peter Gabriel - Down To Earth ) Every since I first saw the Pixar film " Wall-E " I've been meaning to choose this song, but it kept slipping my mind for some reason. This song, which was composed by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman, plays during the final credits of the film. It is a great song in so many ways, plus I needed a Peter Gabriel track on my list; I cannot believe I am almost 900 in without one. Here is a fan video with the song on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Edgar Winter Group - Free Ride My song pick two years ago today: Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee +
