6716. Three Dog Night - Joy to the World

Image
From: Naturally ; Year: 1970; Genre: Rock As many probably already know, one of Three Dog Night's three-part lead vocals Chuck Negron passed away a couple of days ago at the age of 83. He was noted as the higher pitched of the three vocalists and could really belt it out. While he sung the main lead and co-leads on many of their hit songs during the band's career, I would wager to guess that this is/was his signature track and one of the most memorable. From wot I understand, the rest of the band really didn't dig this one that was being shown by Hoyt Axton, who later also mad his own recording of it. However, Chuck Negron liked the nonsensical nature of the "fun" lyrics and thought they needed something not so serious on their record. He ended up being very correct and became one of their biggest hits. Heck, even children today will get into it the second they hear the opening lyrics: "Jeremiah was a bullfrog!"   Hear Joy to the World on YouTube.     ...

6504. Three Dog Night - I'd Be So Happy

Image
From: Hard Labor ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock This song, written by The Paupers and Lighthouse drummer and other instrumentalist Skip Prokop was on my mind a great deal yesterday for some reason. I am not aware if Prokop recorded a version of this song solo or with a band, but Three Dog Night did make it apparently a minor hit. The first time I heard this track was after buying a newly released greatest hits double album through my sister's Columbia House subscription on cassette. Funny enough, on the track listings there was a misprint where the titles to I'd Be So Happy and Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues) titles were blended; it said: "I'd Be Mething Sweet" on the tape's cover. Both songs on the tape were fine and did not suffer from this mess-up. Anyway, this probably could be categorized as a "power ballad" if it contained a soaring guitar solo, but everything else is present. Chuck Negron's powerful vocals and the ever-present harmon...

6392. Three Dog Night - Out In the Country

Image
From: It Ain't Easy ; Year: 1970; Genre: Rock Been on a Three Dog Night kick or so it would seem lately. This is one of their songs that I immediately fell in love with the first time I heard it; mostly Floyd Sneed's drums and Joe Schermie's bass, but also the beautiful organ played by Jimmy Greenspoon. Out In the Country was one that came from noted songsmiths Roger Nichols and Paul Williams and whilst a song concerning environmental consciousness, it is not too preachy and more of an upbeat track about getting away from the hustle and bustle of life and back to nature similarly in message to The Drifters' classic Up On a Roof .   Hear Out In the Country on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lobo - California Kid and Reemo   My song pick 2 years ago today: ABBA - I Still Have Faith In You   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Mine Is the Mountain   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - Ascent   My song pick 5 years ...

6384. Three Dog Night - Time To Get Alone

Image
From: Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story , 1965-1975; Year: 1993 (1967); Genre: Pop/Rock Back when I was just getting serious about compiling my own music collection this collection of classic Three Dog Night songs happened to be released at about that point. Whilst it has all of the "greatest hits" from the band, there were also a few unreleased and solo tracks from two of their lead singers on it, which I thoroughly enjoyed listening to. This is one of the unreleased songs that predates the band when they were still going by the moniker "Redwood." Originally written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys for Redwood; it was recorded, but as stated, never saw a release until this time. The Beach Boys would end up recording their own version for their 1969 album 20/20 , which Three Dog Night singer Danny Hutton played the piano on it. Anyway, this very much a late '60s pop song with a mechanical waltz time with their signature three-piece harmony/lead.   Hear Time ...

6378. Three Dog Night - Chest Fever

Image
From: Three Dog Night "One" ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Rock/Hard Rock Back in the day when first hearing this track off of a recently purchased cassette tape I did not immediately like it, but it grew on me. As with much of Three Dog Night's repertoire, this is a cover; it was originally written and recorded just a few months prior by The Band on their debut album. Coincidentally, this was also Three Dog Night's debut, so they must've got cracking on their version, which was slightly heavier musically. I do not know how the song did overall, but it was also released as the b-side to their monster hit One . I have to say, they did a bang-up job on it, especially keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon , who did an excellent job interpreting Garth Hudson 's exquisite organ work and solos.   Hear Chest Fever on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Them - Gloria   My song pick 2 years ago today: Vince Guaraldi - Red Baron   My song pick 3 years ago toda...

6167. Three Dog Night - Pieces of April

Image
From: Seven Separate Fools ; Year: 1972; Genre: Soft Rock It is the final pick of April, and I have to remark that this one really drag by; most of the time months seem to zoom by, but not this one. Anyway, this cover of the song originally written and recorded by Dave Loggins just seemed like an absolutely splendid pick. Pieces of April is rather unique as well as apparently only vocalist Chuck Negron sang on it with the other two lead singers absent, apparently making it one of only two hit singles by Three Dog Night to feature only a single singer.    Hear Pieces of April on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Alice in Chains - Hate to Feel   My song pick 2 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Sell My Soul   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ohio Players - Love Rollercoaster   My song pick 4 years ago today: Fairport Convention - Expletive Delighted   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Hollies - On a Carousel My song pick 6 years ...

Image
From: Harmony ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock Been listening to quite a bit of Three Dog Night since last night and thought I'd go ahead and pick one. As with most of their material this song is a cover; the song was originally written and recorded by Joni Mitchell. I really like wot they did with this one, it's got a nice groove to it. 4360. Three Dog Night - It's a Jungle Out There

Image
From: It's a Jungle ; Year: 1983; Genre: Rock/Reggae I've been meaning to pick another one from Three Dog Night for a while now and am finally getting around to it. This song is quite different from the sound you'd expect from the band: a lot of synthesizer paired with a reggae beat and feel. This has to be at least the third version of It's a Jungle Out There I've heard. Watch a music video clip on YouTube. From: Harmony ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock Had Three Dog Night on my mind today. I absolutely love the thumping, funky bass and drums throughout this one; they really drive the song. 3503. Three Dog Night - The Show Must Go On

Image
From: Hard Labor ; Year: 1974; Genre: Rock/Pop After hear Three Dog Night's version of the Leo Sayer hit I just had to pick it. It's somewhere between a normal mainstream rock track and a novelty track, especially with using Julius Fučík's famous Entrance of the Gladiators theme, which because of its use in the circus, we associate it with clowns and their theatrics. Overall the song is done extremely well and help along the story told in the lyrics. Hear The Show Must Go On on YouTube. 3478. Three Dog Night - The Loner

Image
From: Three Dog Night "One" ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock Had a couple of tunes from Three Dog Night on my mind; as usual I'm picking one. This is their cover of one of Neil Young's tunes from his first solo album released the same year; I have to say, Three Dog Night's version is quite a bit funkier and definitely has more soul flavour to it. With that great powerhouse rhythm section of Floyd Sneed and Joe Schermie you cannot go wrong. Hear The Loner on YouTube. 3011. Three Dog Night - Feelin' Alright

Image
From: Suitable for Framing ; Year: 1969; Genre: Funk Rock Yesterday I discovered that Three Dog Night singer Cory Wells had passed away , so I thought it would be apropos to pick one of their songs; of the three lead singers with the band he was the one with the really powerful and soulful voice. Anyway, today is also Funky Friday, so I went with their version of the often covered funk rock classic; excellent song for the day. Hear Feelin' Alright on YouTube. 2979 Three Dog Night - Mama Told Me Not To Come

Image
From: It Ain't Easy ; Year: 1970; Genre: Rock I had some of their music on my mind since yesterday evening, so I thought I'd take it as a sign to pick one of their songs. Not only have I not picked this track, which is one of my favourites from the band, but I haven't picked one from the band for over three years. Anyway, this rather funky cover originally from Randy Newman is probably one of the band's biggest hits. The bass, drums and keys drive the song mostly, and even though the song has odd meters and meter changes the listener really doesn't notice it unless you're paying attention. It really matches up quite well with the lyrics, which of course, depict from a first-person point of view, a sheltered individual's first encounter with a wild party. Hear Mama Told Me Not To Come on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Pearl Jam - Sirens My song pick two years ago today: Carmen - Daybreak My song pick three years ago today: Rush - F...

1775 Three Dog Night - It's For You

Image
From: Three Dog Night " One " ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock I'm in a mood to hear some Three Dog Night this morning; this track is one of the more interesting arrangements from the band. As with most of Three Dog Night's music It's For You is also a cover; it was originally written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney to be recorded by Cilla Black, which can be found here on YouTube . While Three Dog Night's version is a cover, the lyrics are really the only aspect borrowed from the original. From what I read about their version of the song, they were getting ready to record it in the studio but for some reason only the three lead vocalists and drummer Floyd Sneed were there on time. As the story goes they started practicing it a cappella with only hand claps and the drums providing a beat. Apparently they liked how it sounded and scrapped the original idea and kept most of the arrangement that way. Eventually, towards the end of the song, the entire band do...

1479 Three Dog Night - Heaven is in Your Mind

Image
1479 Three Dog Night - Heaven is in Your Mind From: Three Dog Night (One) , Year: 1968 Genre: Rock/Psychedelia I had this song playing in my head most of the morning this Sunday. I decided that if I could find it on YouTube I would make it my pick for today, and sure enough it was there. As with the majority of Three Dog Night's songs, this is a cover; it was originally written by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood and recorded a year earlier on the Traffic album Mr. Fantasy . This is another one of my favourite "headphone music" tracks; I love how they played with vocals and harmonies to make an interesting sounding song. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a television video clip circa '69 on YouTube. Here is the original version performed by Traffic on YouTube. 786 ( Three Dog Night - Shambala )

Image
786 ( Three Dog Night - Shambala ) Last night I finally finished the video game Uncharted 2 , which was about the search for Shambhala, aka Shangri-La. Whilst playing this game, this song kept running through my mind and I figured I needed to add it. This Daniel Moore composition was one of Three Dog Night's best later hits in my opinion. It features Cory Wells on lead vocals, which helps to give the song a very soulful feeling. Of course, as with any Three Dog Night song, the harmonies are top-notch. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a live performance from '75 on YouTube. Here is a more recent live performance on YouTube. 751 ( Three Dog Night - One )

Image
751 ( Three Dog Night - One ) This track was actually a cover of a song, which can be found here on YouTube, written by Harry Nilsson ; it has been covered by quite few other artists as well. Most of Three Dog Night's catalog actually consists of songs written by others. Usually they would make a hit out of the song and would actually bring fame to the author of as well. Three Dog Night injected their own Rock/Funk sound in this song to make it more their own rather than trying to just copy the song itself, but a lot of the original idea is still there. The bass, as with most Three Dog Night songs, is brought way up in the mix; it really thumps quite prominently in this one. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a mimed television performance on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Billy Joel - Captain Jack My song pick two years ago today: Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King +
