Image
From: Computer Games ; Year: 1982; Genre: Funk Thought I'd already chosen this one, which is George Clinton's biggest hits from his solo recordings. It has been sampled and used in popular media a lot over the years as well as just being a great funk standard.   Hear Atomic Dog on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: War - Vibeka   My song pick 2 years ago today: Spacehog - Only a Few   My song pick 3 years ago today: Duran Duran - New Religion   My song pick 4 years ago today: T. 6697. Parliament - Mr. Wiggles

Image
From: Motor Booty Affair ; Year: 1978; Genre: Funk Did I ever mention that I really love Motor Booty Affair ? Well, if not, I do; one of my favourite P-Funk albums. 6599. Parliament - The Motor-Booty Affair

Image
From: Motor Booty Affair ; Year: 1978; Genre: Funk Personally, it would be impossible for me to pick a favourite P-Funk album. Though, if I did have to choose one I would probably say that my favourite would be the one currently in the player or on the turntable. That said, I've always loved Motor Booty Affair just for the crazy zaniness and of course that infectious groove. This is, of course, the title track and is quite smooth and very danceable.   Hear The Motor-Booty Affair on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Alphaville - Fallen Angel     My song pick 2 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - I Am the Storm   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Psyche   My song pick 4 years ago today: Wolfmother - Apple Tree   My song pick 5 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand My song pick 6 years ago today: Toronto - Even the Score   My song pick 7 years ago today: Kreeps - The Dead Sled My...

6436. George Clinton - Pleasures Of Exhaustion (Do It Till I Drop)

Image
From: Some Of My Best Jokes Are Friends ; Year: 1985; Genre: Funk/Electronica Been burning the candle at both ends lately and time has become limited as of late; hope that changes soon. You get to the point that your body just say "enough" and you have to rest. Anyway, here's an aptly titled song for the occasion; absolutely love it all around. It is almost wot you could call Progressive Funk, if that's a real sub-genre.    Hear Pleasures Of Exhaustion (Do It Till I Drop) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Richie Kotzen - Dream of a New Day   My song pick 2 years ago today: Gordon Lightfoot - Rainy Day People   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Thermals - I Might Need You To Kill   My song pick 4 years ago today: IQ - Passing Strangers   My song pick 5 years ago today: Melissa Manchester - Don't Cry Out Loud   My song pick 6 years ago today: Lighthouse - Magic's in the Dancing My song pick 7 years ago today: Bachman-...

6415. Parliament - Testify

Image
From: Up for the Down Stroke ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk/Soul/R&B You could look at this track two ways: 1. it is a cover, or 2. it is a re-recording. Originally was cut for the predecessor Doo-Wop group: The Parliaments , of which George Clinton was the leader under the title (I Wanna) Testify . It was, of course, made funkier for Parliament, which I say is a plus.   Hear Testify on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Iain Matthews - Morgan the Pirate   My song pick 2 years ago today: Soundgarden - Tighter & Tighter   My song pick 3 years ago today: Damn Yankees - Runaway   My song pick 4 years ago today: Camel - Lies   My song pick 5 years ago today: Hawkwind - 65 Million Years Ago   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Police - Don't Stand Too Close To Me My song pick 7 years ago today: Mastodon - The Wolf is Loose My song pick 8 years ago today: Steely Dan - Don't Take Me Alive My song pick 9 years ago today: Jethr...

6274. Funkadelic - Miss Lucifer's Love

Image
From: America Eats Its Young ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk Rock/Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock/Soul Here's one that really defies genres to its core; it is hard funky rock with a blistering guitar, (remind me again why Eddy Hazel isn't considered amongst the best "axe slingers" of all time?), all the psychedelia you can handle steeped in soul as well as heavy technical music that wouldn't be out of place with mid 1970s King Crimson. Dang, all I can say is that this one is the very embodiment of a musical tour-'d-force.   Hear Miss Lucifer's Love on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steeleye Span - The Bonny Black Hare   My song pick 2 years ago today: Cheap Trick - Reach Out   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - New Damage   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Divine Wind   My song pick 5 years ago today: Funkadelic - Butt to Buttresusitation   My song pick 6 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby - Halcyon Days My s...

6210. Funkadelic - Wars of Armageddon

Image
From: Maggot Brain ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Psychedelic Rock/Soul/Hard Rock As I have probably stated prior: Funkadelic is one of my all-time favourite bands, and Maggot Brain has definitely become my top liked from them. This is the last track on the record and they really let it all out with the loud random statements and weird sound effects, but for me personally I love the fusion of the starkly differing and similar sound and genres. Of course, anything with a guitar solo from the late-great Eddy Hazel is a win in my book.   Hear Wars of Armageddon on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Black 47 - Fanatic Heart   My song pick 2 years ago today: Motörhead - Hellraiser   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - Reflections   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot   My song pick 5 years ago today: Victor Wooten - Keep it Low   My song pick 6 years ago today: Klaatu -...

6126. Funkadelic - Take Your Dead Ass Home! (Say Som'n Nasty)

Image
From: Tales of Kidd Funkadelic ; Year: 1976; Genre: Funk Bringing another workweek to a close with some funk; as I have said prior: I came for Parliament, but stayed for Funkadelic; love both P-Funk bands immensely, but in the end I lean slightly towards the later. By the way the title suggests, the song does contain some... not so polite language, but very fun nevertheless.   Hear Take Your Dead Ass Home! (Say Som'n Nasty) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Exciters - Tell Him   My song pick 2 years ago today: Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - I Promise To Remember   My song pick 3 years ago today: Santana - Song of the Wind   My song pick 4 years ago today: Elton John - Jamaica Jerk-Off   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jimmy Castor - Amazon My song pick 6 years ago today: April Wine - Enough is Enough My song pick 7 years ago today: Faith No More - Falling to Pieces My song pick 8 years ago today: The Presidents of...

5942. Funkadelic - You Hit the Nail on the Head

Image
From: America Eats Its Young ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk I happened to have this classic double record on my mind the other day and thought that I would make it today's Funky Friday Pick . You Hit the Nail on the Head is the opening track that is really seven minutes of P-Funk musical bliss.   Hear You Hit the Nail on the Head on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Boston - Tell Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ian Anderson - The Browning of the Green   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Roadways   My song pick 4 years ago today: Helloween - Pumpkins United     My song pick 5 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Hatesong My song pick 6 years ago today: Funkadelic - Phunklords My song pick 7 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - When Time Stood Still My song pick 8 years ago today: Soundgarden - Loud Love My song pick 9 years ago today: Joachim Witt - Das Jüngste Gericht My song pick 10 years ago...

5857. Parliament - Unfunky UFO

Image
From: Mothership Connection ; Year: 1975; Genre: Funk/Jazz Fusion/Progressive Rock Wow! Where did June go? Sped right on by without me noticing or so it would seem. Anyway, I had every intention to choose a funky track by an artist I rarely pick, but I just couldn't get this landmark record off my mind; is that a bad thing? I think absolutely not! Unfunky UFO is kind of a hidden gem on the album, if you will, being dwarfed by its larger-than-life-itself brethren from the record. So much more musically going on throughout this one than just an amazing funk track; this one would stand up well with the best progressive rock songs out there in my opinion, and you can get down and boogie to it to boot. Truly a work of art.   Hear Unfunky UFO on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bread - Let Your Love Go   My song pick 2 years ago today: Simple Minds - Love Song   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Hard Liner   My song pick 4 years a...

5822. George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars - T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (Fly Away)

Image
From: T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. ; Year: 1996; Genre: R&B/Funk Recently started listening to this record once again and thought this Friday would be an excellent time to choose one from it. This album features not only George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars, but some classic Parliament-Funkadelic alums as well. Not only that, the album, ( T he A wesome P ower O f A F ully O perational M othership), and this title-track is a reference to The Mothership that has been such a big part of the two bands' mythos for so long, so that even makes it all the more awesome!    Hear T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (Fly Away) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Huey Lewis & the News - The Heart of Rock & Roll   My song pick 2 years ago today: War - Why Can't We Be Friends?   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Sail Away   My song pick 4 years ago today: Soundgarden - Ty Cobb My song pick 5 years ago today: ZZ Top - Got Me Under Pres...

5345. Funkadelic - What is Soul?

Image
From: Funkadelic ; Year: 1970; Genre: Psychedelic Funk/Soul Had some early Parliament-Funkadelic on my mind on this Funky Friday , so it was kind of easy picking a song for today. This one is a deep mix of different and experimental music styles with a huge influence of psychedelia and soul throughout; quite an interesting sound.   Hear What is Soul? on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Visage - Fade to Grey   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dream Theater - Paralyzed   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Clifford Brown & Max Roach Quintet - Parisian Thoroughfare My song pick 4 years ago today: Laura Branigan - Solitaire My song pick 5 years ago today: Simon & Garfunkle - Scarborough Fair/Canticle My song pick 6 years ago today: Uriah Heep - Easy Livin' My song pick 7 years ago today: Motörhead - Overkill My song pick 8 years ago today: The Guess Who - 6 A.M. or Nearer My song pick 9 years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - Ea...

5324. George Clinton - Do Fries Go With That Shake?

Image
From: R&B Skeletons In The Closet ; Year: 1986; Genre: Funk/Dance After being off in "left field" so to speak with the different Funky Friday picks lately I decided I would choose one from one of the Godfathers of the funk this time. As with most of George Clinton's material, this one is very fun to listen to with all of the 1980s electronic funk to be had.    Hear Do Fries Go With That Shake? on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jefferson Starship - Alien   My song pick 2 years ago today: Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get It Right   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ten Years After - Over the Hill My song pick 4 years ago today: The Who - Sister Disco My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - Shock Treatment My song pick 6 years ago today: Marillion - Hooks in You My song pick 7 years ago today: Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity My song pick 8 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Breaking the Silence My song pick 9 years ago today: A...
