6868. Weather Report - Punk Jazz

Image
From: Mr. Gone ; Year: 1978; Genre: Jazz Fusion Don't know why I have not been listening to as much Weather Report as I used to. At that, the last time I chose one of their songs was over three years ago, and it was one off of this record to boot. For the last couple of decades I consumed a lot of the Weather Report material as well as associated acts and artists; Wayne Shorter and, of course Jaco in particular. I'm thinking that it might have to do with delving into other Fusion bands and players that've taken up my attention. Like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock and his Head Hunters, as well as all of their related bands and solo artists, which is extensive if you think about it. It is a real treat every time one of Joe Zawinul and Weather Report's music pops on my playlist; still enjoy it a lot. Anyway, this is one of Jaco Pastorius' songs, and whilst being a tour d'force in bass guitar virtuosity, all of the other band members get to ...

Image
From: All-American Alien Boy ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock I was listening to this song the other day and immediately fell in love with this track. 3638. Weather Report - Cannonball

Image
From: Black Market ; Year: 1976; Genre: Jazz Fusion In the mood for some more jazz fusion; this one, which was written to honour at the time, the recently deceased jazz legend and Joe Zawinul's ex-bandleader Cannonball Adderley , seemed to fit my mood. I love the melodiousness that Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul put into this song on their respective instruments; a truly beautiful song. Hear Cannonball on YouTube. 3252. Jaco Pastorius - Liberty City

Image
From: Word of Mouth ; Year: 1983; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk Last night I saw a documentary on the virtuoso bassist Jaco Pastorius and it got me wanting to listen to his music again. Since it was Friday, I thought it would be great to pick one of his songs with a flavour of funk to it. Hear Liberty City on YouTube. 3188. Weather Report - Palladíum

Image
From: Heavy Weather ; Year: 1977; Jazz Fusion/Funk Might not be a true "funk" track on this Funky Friday, but the basis of most of Palladíum is funk mixed with Latin beats, so I should be fine. Anyway, this is another one that features excellent leads by both Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter; of course Jaco is excellent as always on bass and the drums and percussions by Alex Acuña and Manolo Badrena are the glue that holds the entire thing together and make it so danceable. Hear Palladíum on YouTube. 2997 Jaco Pastorius - Soul Intro/The Chicken

Image
From: The Birthday Concert ; Year: 1995 (1981); Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk I had this funky piece of jazz on my mind this morning and thought it would make a great Funky Friday pick; my 109th in a row to be exact. This is Jaco Pastorius and a few friends of his doing a great live rendition of The Chicken originally written by Jazz composer/sax player Pee Wee Ellis. It was originally recorded in 1981 at Jaco's 30th birthday celebration, but didn't get released to disc until 1995. Hear Soul Intro/The Chicken on YouTube. 2605 Weather Report - Havona

Image
From: Heavy Weather ; Year: 1977; Genre: Jazz Fusion Boy, after listening to a whole bunch of Jazz Fusion last night I really got into the mood for some more today. This is one of their more listenable tracks, which is from the pen of Jaco Pastorius; not to say it's not technical, because it is, just well constructed. Hear Havona on YouTube. 2285 Jaco Pastorius (featuring Sam & Dave) - Come Over, Come Over

Image
From: Jaco Pastorius ; Year: 1976; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk I'm continuing my streak of making Funky Friday picks with this being my eighth consecutive. Last week I picked one from a bassist that is among the greatest alive, but this week I decided I should pick one from one of the past greats who was a pioneer that the best today were inspired by: Jaco Pastorius. Anyway, this song is definitely a darn good blending of Jazz and Funk that is excellent by itself if it was an instrumental, but Sam & Dave's vocals push this song to be one of the best on the album. Hear Come Over, Come Over on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Chet Atkins - Whispering My song pick two years ago today: Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall, Parts 1-3 My song pick three years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - X-Ray Eyes My song pick four years ago today: Alton Ellis - Sunday Coming My song pick five years ago today: Pat Benatar - Treat Me Right My song pick six years ...

1776 Jaco Pastorius - Amerika

Image
From: Invitation ; Year: 1983; Genre: Jazz Fusion It's kind of an odd coincidence that my 1776th song picked would be about two weeks from Independence Day, (July 4th). With today's pick number being 1776, I figured that I should choose something appropriate. There were quite a few songs that came to mind, however this Jaco Pastorius bass solo based on the anthem: "America the Beautiful" came to mind and I couldn't help but make it today's song pick. As far as I know this song was only released twice on two live albums: The '83 Invitation album and the posthumously released Birthday Concert album. This is actually quite a fun little rendition to learn and is actually deceptively easy, that is, once you get down Jaco's pinch harmonic technique. Hear the version of Amerika from Invitation on YouTube. Here is a live performance circa '82 on YouTube. Here is a performance of the song from an instructional video on YouTube. My song p...

1518 Trio of Doom - Continuum

Image
1518 Trio of Doom - Continuum From: Trio of Doom , Year: 1979 Genre: Jazz Fusion Yesterday Max chose Spyro Gyra's Cayo Hueso and it got me thinking about this Fusion track that I've been meaning to pick for a bit now. This one comes off of the Jazz power trio/super group Trio of Doom's one and only album. This is a rather pretty track that features some excellent technical musicianship from all three members. Hear Continuum on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Jethro Tull - Aqualung My song pick two years ago today: Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys - Wayfaring Stranger My song pick three years ago today: Billy Squier - In The Dark My song pick four years ago today: Jethro Tull - Steel Monkey +

1502 Weather Report - Barbary Coast

Image
1502 Weather Report - Barbary Coast From: Black Market , Year: 1976 Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk I was having a lot of fun playing with this song yesterday; I decided that if I had not picked it I would today. Well, low and behold, I checked and surprisingly I hadn't added it to my list yet. This is one of my favouite tunes from the band, I like how it takes you all over the place. I absolutely love how they used the blast of a train horn at the beginning to usher in the song and at the end you hear the click-clack of the train going by; almost as if the song is a symbolic train itself. This was one of only two songs on the Black Market album to feature Jaco Pastorius; it is actually a composition of his as well. Jaco Pastorius would go on to replace Alphonso Johnson and join the band full time for the next four studio albums and was then be replaced by Victor Bailey. It's amazing just how many great bassists played in this band. Hear Barbary Coast on YouTube. Watch a li...

1400 Jaco Pastorius - Kuru/Speak Like a Child

Image
1400 Jaco Pastorius - Kuru/Speak Like a Child From: Jaco Pastorius , Year: 1976 Genre: Jazz Fusion I'm making my 1400 th song pick today. I thought that this awesome medley or sorts written by Jaco Pastorius and Herbie Hancock would be rather nice for the occasion. This is true piece of Jazz Fusion; it has more of a Rock, R&B, and Funk influence with amazing technical musicianship. Jaco sure lays down quite a mean groove throughout Kuru on his bass along with the drums/percussion. Herbie Hancock's keyboards and a host of string instruments fill up the rest quite nicely. I'd have to say that my favourite part of this piece is their rendition of Hancock's Speak like a Child ; there's so much feeling in their playing. I love how they bounce back and forth between the two songs' themes, it makes the overall piece quite dynamic. Hear Kuru/Speak Like a Child on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: The Grass Roots - Let's Live For To...

1141 Al Di Meola - Suite – Golden Dawn

Image
1141 Al Di Meola - Suite – Golden Dawn Over the weekend I happened upon a couple of yard sales, one of which had a huge record collection for sale with them going for 50¢ a piece. I ended up getting a slew of Jazz records including the album which this track hails from: Al Di Meola's Land of the Midnight Sun ; some others of note that I procured were Rahsaan Roland Kirk's Blacknuss and Ron Carter's All Blues albums. When reading the liner notes on this album the musicians list almost reads like the who's who of the mid '70s Jazz Fusion scene. On this track it features, of course, Al Di Meola on guitar, Alphonse Mouzon on Drums, Mingo Lewis on Percussion, Barry Miles on Keyboards, and "bass deity" Jaco Pastorius on bass. The Suite's three parts are: Morning Fire, Calmer of the Tempests, From Ocean to the Clouds ; it is about 10 minutes of pure musical bliss. If you like Prog/Rock you probably will like this track; some the Rock aspects of Jazz ...

734 ( Trio of Doom - Dark Prince )

Image
734 ( Trio of Doom - Dark Prince ) For those who are unfamiliar with the Trio of Doom , they were a very short-lived Fusion Jazz/Funk supergroup made up of three master Jazz musicians: John McLaughlin (guitar), Jaco Pastorius (Bass), and Tony Williams (Drums); this was their only album together. I can hear a lot of Mingus' influence among others in this song. An excellent piece of Jazz, however it gets just a bit busy at times; almost a musical three-ringed-circus. What do you expect with three Jazz musicians of this caliber playing together at the height of Jazz Fusion? Here is the studio version of Dark Prince with Para Oriente afterward on YouTube. Here is a live recording on YouTube. +

733 ( Jaco Pastorius - Chromatic Fantasy )

Image
733 ( Jaco Pastorius - Chromatic Fantasy ) Time for some Jaco; this song is a very fun piece of music. Chromatic Fantasy is one of those "musician humbling" pieces of music, which was written by Johann Sebastian Bach ( BWV 903 ); this is Jaco's adaptation of the work on the electric bass. Word of Mouth is an amazing album and I would recommend it to any musical connoisseur or bassist that is not content with holding down the bottom end and/or playing cyclical pedestrian bass lines. Here is a recording of the song on YouTube. Here is an extended bass solo on YouTube, which contains the song amongst others. +

Song 588 ( Jaco Pastorius - Slang )

Image
This is probably Jaco's best known bass solo. It is quite bombastic and flashy, as to be expected with a solo on any instrument. While not really listenable to the ears of the average listener, to a connoisseur of music, (especially a bassist), it is quite nice to listen to. To create this live masterpiece he used loops and effects on his bass along with his incredible talent and showmanship. Here is the recording from 8:30 on YouTube. Here is a live performance of the song circa '79 on YouTube. Here is another extended live version on YouTube. +
