6841. The Nice - Brandenburger

Image
From: Ars Longa Vita Brevis ; Year: 1968; Genre: Symphonic Rock/Progressive Rock Here's a great one from The Nice, who were known for such big, bombastic musical terrors. As you might be able to discern from the title, both it and the music it contains derives from Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concertos ; the Third in particular. Keith Emerson is as amazing as ever on the keys in this "classical rocker."   Hear Brandenburger on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Guess Who - Lightfoot     My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Roots to Branches     My song pick 3 years ago today: Queen - The Prophet's Song   My song pick 4 years ago today: Bee Gees - To Love Somebody   My song pick 5 years ago today: Marillion - Warm Wet Circles   My song pick 6 years ago today: Dire Straits - Tunnel of Love   My song pick 7 years ago today: Banchee - 3/4 Song My song pick 8 years ago today: Parliament - ...

6560. Johan Sebastian Bach - BWV 1028 - Sonata No.2 in D-Major

Image
BWV 1028 ; Year: 1730-1740; Genre: Baroque Period classical Here we are once more; another year starts for my venerable, antiquated song-a-day blog. September 1st marks the 18th year that I've been at this; an not a single day missed. One of the older bloggers on here that I miss a lot, Max, would probably say that if it was a person, it could now vote and possibly be through high school. Hard to believe that it has been this long; in two years, God willing and the creek don't rise, I will be marking two decades: 20 years! Anyway, as I normally do, it is time for another breathtaking piece from the immortal maestro Johann Sebastian Bach. I thought that I would go a little bit different this time around by picking a less raucous piece; this one was written for one harpsichord and one viol de gamba . Both were popular during the period; whilst the harpsichord is very well known today, many might not know exactly what a viol is. A viol is similar to the violin family nomenclature...

6291. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 542 - Great Fantasia and Fugue in G-Minor

Image
BWV 542 ; ~1720; Genre: Baroque Period/Organwork/classical Another year has passed whilst another one begins; 17 years now unless my arithmetic has failed once more... hard to believe it's been this long. Oh well, moving right along.... As usual I am choosing another one from the master of all things musical from the Baroque period: Johann Sebastian Bach . This is one of his grandiose organworks that is a truly typical piece for him; it absolutely will not fade into the background when you play it and will flat-out demand your attention, but that's one the aspects of Bach's works that I love so much.   Hear Great Fantasia and Fugue in G-Minor , BWV 542, performed by Van Doeselaar on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 566 - Prelude and Fugue in E-Major My song pick 2 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 15 - Denn Du Wirst Meine Seele Nicht In Der Hölle Lassen   My song pick 3 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - ...

5921. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 566 - Prelude and Fugue in E-Major

Image
BWV 566 ; Year: ~1705; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Sixteen years now I have been posting a song a day; also keeping with my "tradition" of picking something from or associated with Johann Sebastian Bach. Anyway, this is one of his organworks written during the first decade of the 18th Century, which apparently was a rather busy time for him for composing. From what I understand he also transposed this piece into C-Major (BWV 566a), which was for instruments tuned in meantone temperament , which would sound discordant in E-Major.   Hear BWV 566 (E-Major) on YouTube. 5543. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 15 - Denn Du Wirst Meine Seele Nicht In Der Hölle Lassen

Image
BWV 15 ; Year: 1704; Genre: Baroque Period/classical It's another September 1st, and thus it is another year in the books for my song-a-day blog; hard to believe that I have been at this for 15 years now. As such, I'm choosing another one from good old J.S. Bach's works catalogue ; thought since it has been 15 years I'd go ahead and pick the 15th piece listed in it. This is another case of a piece of music attributed to J.S. Bach originally, but now there is some doubt as to its authorship. It is now thought that this cantata was actually written by J.S. Bach's third-cousin Johann Ludwig Bach . Whatever the case, it is still a wonderful piece of music written for an Easter Service with the encouraging title " For You Shall Not Leave My Soul In Hell " when translated to English.   Hear BWV 15 Denn Du Wirst Meine Seele Nicht In Der Hölle Lassen on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1 - Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenste...

5175. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1 - Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern

Image
BWV 1 ; Year: 1725; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Made it to another anniversary of starting this blog some 14 years ago back in 2007; as always I'm choosing a piece from the master composer J.S. Bach to mark the occasion. This cantata was composed for Annunciation in 1725 as well as Palm Sunday, which occurred at the same time that year.   Hear BWV 1 Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 92 - Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn   My song pick 2 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 90 - Es reißet euch ein schrecklich Ende My song pick 3 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 130 - Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir My song pick 4 years ago today: Schefczyk - Play Bach Funky My song pick 5 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 230 - Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden My song pick 6 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 225 - Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied My so...

BWV 92 ; Year: 1725; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Well, it's another year completed for my blog, which I've been doing for 13 years now; it doesn't seem like that long, but I guess it is. Anyway, every anniversary of my blog I pick something from the pen of J.S. Bach; this year's no different. This is a beautiful cantata that really commands your attention when listening to it; so amazingly complex and lovely to listen to. Hear BWV 92 conducted by Karl Richter on YouTube. BWV 90 ; Year: 1723; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Here I am again celebrating the birthday, so to speak, of my Song a Day Blog, which I started 12 years ago today. It's amazing to think that I've been at this for 12 years and almost 5000 songs. Anyway, as I normally do, I am picking one from the maestro J.S. Bach, this is a beautiful and powerful piece, with some amazing music and vocals. It still blows my mind how he could conceptualize these pieces in his mind; the man was amazing. Hear BWV 90 -- Es reißet euch ein schrecklich Ende on YouTube. BWV 130 ; Year: 1724; Genre: Baroque Period/classical September first once again marks the anniversary of when I started this blog: eleven years ago today I made my first post, which was a J.S. Bach piece. As I try to do almost all the time, except for that one time I forgot, I'm picking another one of his pieces; it is a very beautiful cantata. Hear BWV 130 on YouTube. BWV 375 ; Year: Unknown ; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Making a proper "Bach" pick a day late because of yesterday's Funky Friday pick , which was also Bach related; you can never have too much J.S. 3330. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 230 - Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden

Image
BWV 230 ; Year:~1700s~; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Wow, today marks the 9th anniversary of me starting this blog; it snuck up on me again. It's hard to believe that in a year I will have been doing this for an entire decade.... Anyway, as I always do, (or at least when I remember to do so), am picking one from J.S. Bach. Since a year ago I picked one of his few surviving motets, I figured I'd do another. This motet has no definite date of writing, and is quite unique amongst the other surviving examples of his motets, but is still full of all that he's known for; simply a great piece. Hear Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden on YouTube. 3241. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV. 1027 - Sonata in G Major

Image
BWV. 1027 ; Year: 1720-1745; Genre: Baroque Period/classical I've been listening to a bunch of Viola de Gamba music over this last weekend and thought I would pick one of my favourites. Who else, would I choose one from other than the maestro himself, Johann Sebastian Bach. This is nothing more than a gorgeous piece written for the Viol and Harpsichord; this is one you could just get lost in and then some; pure magic, this one. Hear Sonata in G Major (BWV 1027) YouTube. 2973 Egg - Fugue in D-Minor

Image
From: Egg ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock I'm drawing an absolute blank for today, so I'm picking one from my queue of bands in the backlog that I've been meaning to pick another one from. Anyway, here's treat for the ears from the early 1970s Prog-Rock band Egg rather than how many bands do when they cover this piece, instead of using the Toccata section they instead focused on the main Fugue section. You gotta love that organ/keyboard work combined with those drums and a modicum of funkiness. Hear Egg's take on Bach's Fugue in D-Minor on YouTube. 2959 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 225 - Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied

Image
BWV 225 ; Year: 1727; Genre: Baroque Period/classical I made it another year with this pick today. Back in 2007 on this day I started this blog on a social site called MySpace and in '09 I moved it here; it's getting hard to believe that I've been at this for eight years now. Anywho, this is an extremely beautiful motet piece for eight voices, and there's a good chance you've hear the melody to this song; it's quite memorable. Hear BWV 225 performed by Orquesta de La Chapelle Royale; conducted byPhilippe Herreweghe on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: 2590 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1077 - Canone doppio sopr'il soggetto My song pick two years ago today: 2218 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 996 - Suite in E-Minor My song pick three years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV. 1051 - Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-Flat My song pick four years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1049 - Brandenburg Concerto No.4 in G major My song...

2889 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1080 - Art of Fugue

Image
BWV. 1080 ; Year(s): 1740-1750; Genre: Baroque Period/classical This is some very uplifting and glorious music; I definitely needed it today. One of the pieces from the twilight of the Maestro's illustrious life and is really an exposition in counter-point with 3 to 4 melodies (voices) going at once to make a gorgeous sound. Hear Art of Fugue (BWV 1080) on YouTube. All nearly 80 minutes of musical heaven on the organ. My song pick a year ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - Inside My song pick three years ago today: Nightwish - The Crow, the Owl and the Dove My song pick four years ago today: Wilson Pickett - Mr. Magic Man My song pick five years ago today: PAIN featuring Anette Olzon - Follow Me My song pick six years ago today: Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera My song pick seven years ago today: Rush - Natural Science

2590 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1077 - Canone doppio sopr'il soggetto

Image
BWV 1077 ; Year: 1747; Genre: Baroque Period/Classical Well, today marks the seventh anniversary of my Song a Day Blog, which I started all the way back on this date in 2007; it's hard to believe that it's now 2014 and that I've been keeping this labour of love going strong seven years later. Anyway, this is one of J.S. Bach's Canons, and is definitely a pretty little piece of music and a nice representation of late Baroque period music. Hear all of his Canons, including BWV 1077 on YouTube. 2400 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 24 - Ein Ungerärbt Gemüte

Image
From: BWV. 24 ; Year: 1723; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Another "odometer rollover pick" today; it neat to think that I have 2400 songs down now. Anyway, I couldn't think of a fitting song to pick, so I thought I would go for something more 'epic.' I finally decided to go with J.S. Bach's 24th Opus, which is an extremely pretty Cantata. The choral vocals are beyond incredible along with the music; an amazing piece to say the least. Hear BWV. 24 Ein Ungerärbt Gemüte on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Hawkwind - Kiss of the Velvet Whip (The Mistress of Pain) My song pick two year ago today: The Doobie Brothers - It Keeps You Runnin' My song pick three years ago today: Steeleye Span - The Mooncoin Jig My song pick four years ago today: Queen - I'm Going Slightly Mad My song pick five years ago today: Jerry Reed - Lightning Rod My song pick six years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Changes

2261 Jethro Tull - Bourée

Image
From: Stand Up ; Year: 1969; Genre: Progressive Rock Out of the first few pieces of music I tried to learn after getting my first bass guitar this had to have been one of the most insane song for a novice to learn, but I did. I remember having to learn Glenn Cornick's bass solo more or less note-by-note; what a pain in the arse. Although, I have to say it was a very rewarding experience and pushed my skills as a musician past their limits, thus making everything else seem tame at the time. Anyway, this was one of Jethro Tull's earlier hits; it is Ian Anderson's arrangement of J.S. Bach's fifth movement of his Suite in E Minor BWV 996 . Apparently Ian had a neighbour that was practicing this song on classical guitar ad nauseam and he thought he would "get back" at J.S. Bach by arranging it into a jazz-rock song. Watch a music video clip of Bourée on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Richard Strauss - Also Sprach Zarathustra My song pick tw...

2218 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 996 - Suite in E-Minor

Image
BWV. 996 ; Year: 1707~1717; Genre: Baroque Period; classical Today marks the sixth year anniversary of my blog; as Max would probably say: my blog is old enough to attend first grade. Anyway, since I'm fresh out of Brandenburg Concertos to pick I had to choose something else from J.S. Bach; I figured this pretty and light piece written for the lute would be a change of pace. I might go on with picking a suite each anniversary, or I might do something else; there is a lot of music to choose from. I believe the maestro wrote around 1200 pieces of music and their still discovering more and more every day. He was an amazing man, musician, and composer; definitely a gift to the World from God Himself. Hear 1. Praeludio: Passaggio - Presto , 2. Allemande , and 3. Courante on YouTube. Hear 4. Sarabande , 5. Bourrée , and 6. Gigue on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV. 1051 - Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-Flat My song pick two years...

2138 The Walter Murphy Band - Toccata and Funk in D Minor

From: Phantom of the Opera ; Year: 1978; Genre: Funk/Disco/classical It's Friday, and since I haven't made one in a while, it is time for a Funky Friday pick. This is Walter Murphy, of " A Fifth of Beethoven " fame's Funk/Disco rendition of J. S. Bach's epic Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor (BWV 565) . Hear Toccata and Funk in D Minor on YouTube.
