3360. The Miracles - Love Machine

Image
From: City of Angels ; Year: 1975; Genre: Disco/Funk/R&B When thinking about the song I should pick for this, my 160th straight Funky Friday , Love Machine was one that seemed just perfect for the occasion. Almost everyone alive at least over 20 years should remember this one; it's a pretty big hit. That chorus and the backing vocals in particular give it a massive hook. Hear Love Machine on YouTube. 3359. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer

Image
From: Talking Heads: 77 ; Year: 1977; Genre: New Wave From somewhere in the recesses of my mind I had this song show itself; I reckon it's a great one to pick, especially since for some reason I hadn't chosen one from Talking Heads yet. You gotta love the way this one was written and arranged; that driving bass and the vocals really make it the excellent song wot it is. Hear Psycho Killer on YouTube. 3357. Brave Belt - Summer Soldier

Image
From: Brave Belt II ; Year: 1972; Genre: Hard Rock Off and on for the last week or so I've had this track on my mind. In my opinion Summer Soldier has a definite style and feel of both The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive , which were Randy Bachman's previous and successor bands respectively. A lot of hard-hitting riff based rock and melodic/soulful pop in this one; a very interesting track. Hear Summer Soldier on YouTube. 3355. Waylander - Lámh Dearg

Image
From: Kindred Spirits ; Year: 2012; Genre: Celtic Folk Metal Dang, I don't know why I haven't revisited this excellent band for a while now... they just blow me away every time I hear them. 3354. Styx - Born For Adventure

Image
From: Equinox ; Year: 1975; Genre: Hard Rock Have had Styx's Equinox album on my mind off and on for about week now; took it as a sign I should pick something from it. This is a hard rocker in the vein of early '70s proto metal; it's definitely one of my favourites from the album and band. Hear Born For Adventure on YouTube. 3353. Bernard Wright - Master Rocker

Image
From: 'Nard ; Year: 1981; Genre: Funk/Jazz Getting another Funky Friday in today with another one from Bernard Wright. 3352. Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - When Time Stood Still

Image
From: Time : Year: 1981; Genre: Progressive Rock/Symphonic Rock/New Wave Yesterday when listening to some music I had this song come on; I immediately knew this was today's pick. Whilst it absolutely fits the theme of the Time rock opera it was sadly left out of the final record until the remaster. However it was released as a B-Side to the biggest hit from the album: Hold On Tight . This is one that in my opinion fuses a lot of the best aspects of ELO/Jeff Lynne's music; there's definitely a lot of Beatles influence in this one as well as the electronic-symphonic goodness that they're known for. Hear When Time Stood Still on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Soundgarden - Loud Love My song pick two years ago today: Joachim Witt - Das Jüngste Gericht My song pick three years ago today: Carmen - The Gypsies My song pick four years ago today: Rosanne Cash - Seven Year Ache My song pick five years ago today: R.E.M. - The One I Love My song p

3351. Russkaja - Energia!

Image
From: Energia! ; Year: 2013; Genre: Power Metal/Ska/Folk Metal This is one that Max introduced me to a while ago, and I happened to remember them today; I should've picked one from them already, better late than never I guess. Anyway, to describe their music it's a type of folk metal made up with a load of ska and a lot of Russian polka influence. A very interesting band to say the least; I love music like this that is something new and on the very edge. Hear Energia! on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Three Dog Night - Mama Told Me Not To Come My song pick two years ago today: Pearl Jam - Sirens My song pick three years ago today: Carmen - Daybreak My song pick four years ago today: Rush - Fountain of Lamenth My song pick five years ago today: Megadeth - Bad Omen My song pick six years ago today: Jethro Tull - Beggar's Farm My song pick seven years ago today: The Beatles - Something My song pick eight years ago today: Jethro Tull - Si

3350. Icehouse - Walls

Image
From: Icehouse ; Year: 1980/1981; Genre: New Wave/Rock I had no song in mind to pick today, so when thinking of a track I happened to think about the Australian band Icehouse; it seemed like a great idea. Music like this definitely brings back the memories; straight-up rock with a good helping of synth and a sprinkling of pop for good measure. Hear Walls on YouTube. 3349. Santo & Johnny - Deep Purple

Image
From: Encore ; Year: 1960; Genre: Pop/Rock/Instrumental I got in the mood for some steel guitar music this morning; Santo & Johnny are always one act I love to listen to just because their steel swings more Hawaiian and jazz rather than contemporary or country. They're in their usual form with this amazingly beautiful piece that wings you away to some far off exotic shore. Hear Deep Purple on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Dire Straits - Expresso Love My song pick two years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Power My song pick three years ago today: Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine My song pick four years ago today: Richard Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries My song pick five years ago today: Joachim Witt - Du Teufel My song pick six years ago today: Karussell - Nämlich Bin Ich Glücklich My song pick seven years ago today: Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams My song pick eight years ago today: The Delgados - All You Need Is Hate My song p

3348. Blood, Sweat & Tears - Spinning Wheel

Image
From: Blood, Sweat & Tears ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock/Jazz Fusion I was thinking about picking another Blood, Sweat & Tears song for a little while now and today seems like a good day. This is of course one of their bigger, if not their biggest hit, so it should be very recognizable; those horns really make this song what it is. Hear Spinning Wheel on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots - Disco Duck My song pick two years ago today: Ian Anderson - New Blood, Old Veins My song pick three years ago today: Lenny Kravitz - I Love the Rain My song pick four years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - September My song pick five years ago today: Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic My song pick six years ago today: The Kinks - Where Have All the Good Times Gone My song pick seven years ago today: Wilson Pickett - In the Midnight Hour My song pick eight years ago today: Collective Soul - Shine My song pick nine years ago toda

3346/47. Triumph - A Minor Prelude/All The Way

Image
From: Never Surrender ; Year: 1983; Genre: Hard Rock/Rock/classical After jamming out to some of their music yesterday I decided to pick another one of their songs. I love the short Prelude piece that is very classical and pretty which contrasts to All The Way, which contains some great guitar which is exemplified in the solo. Hear A Minor Prelude/All The Way on YouTube. 3345. The Jimmy Castor Bunch - You Better Be Good (Or the Devil Gon' Getcha)

Image
From: It's Just Begun ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk/Soul Funky Friday again and I thought I'd revisit one of my favourite funkmasters today. This is some amazing funk as always from Jimmy Castor; that rhythm section can sure put out that bump in spades. Hear You Better Be Good (Or the Devil Gon; Getcha) on YouTube. 3344. Deep Purple - Stormbringer

Image
From: Stormbringer ; Year: 1974; Genre: Hard Rock After catching one of their songs yesterday it seemed like an excellent idea to go with one from Deep Purple today. This, the title track, comes off of the second album to feature Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass; it definitely shows the band's evolution musically. Hear Stormbringer on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Egg - Fugue in D-Minor My song pick two years ago today: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Last DJ My song pick three years ago today: Van Der Graaf Generator - Lemmings (Including Cog) My song pick four years ago today: Nightwish - Feel for You My song pick five years ago today: Genesis - Keep It Dark My song pick six years ago today: Rush - Lessons My song pick seven years ago today: Badfinger - Come and Get It My song pick eight years ago today: Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends My song pick nine years ago today: Rush - Far Cry

3343. Melvins - A History of Bad Men

Image
From: (A) Senile Animal ; Year: 2006; Genre: Sludge Metal/Alternative Metal For about a week now I've been meaning to pick another song from the Melvins; I finally get a day without something going on. This is a rather heavy sounding track, but fun as always when listening to the band. Hear A History of Bad Men on YouTube. 3342. Yes - America

Image
From: Yesterdays ; Year: 1975 (1972); Genre: Progressive Rock I just felt like picking something from Yes today; this cover of the Simon & Garfunkle hit single. Whilst it's autobiographical to a trip taken by Paul Simon and his girlfriend and thus very personal in nature, Yes really did a great job in reinterpreting it and putting their definite spin on it. Hear America on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Styx - Miss America My song pick two years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - The House is a Rockin' My song pick three years ago today: Melvins - Honey Bucket My song pick four years ago today: Bing Crosby - Beautiful Dreamer My song pick five years ago today: Black 47 - Bankers and Gangsters My song pick six years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - House of the Rising Sun My song pick seven years ago today: The Moody Blues - The Story in Your Eyes My song pick eight years ago today: Cheech & Chong feat. 3341. Rush - Middletown Dreams

Image
From: Power Windows ; Year: 1985; Genre: Hard Rock/New Wave It's a mondo busy day, so I'm picking one from one of my favourite bands. 3340. Blondie - Call Me

Image
From: Call Me (single) ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock/New Wave I had every intention of picking something from another band today, but in the end it felt like a good match for today, and plus I've apparently only picked one from Blondie prior. Since it's really not connected to and has surpassed the movie American Giggalo in fame it is interesting to think that such a big track for the band was from a studio hiring Blondie to write and record the song for it. Hear Call Me on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting My song pick two years ago today: Alice in Chains - No Excuses My song pick three years ago today: Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World My song pick four years ago today: Chet Atkins - Battle Hymn of the Republic My song pick five years ago today: Bob Dylan - Maggie's Farm My song pick six years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Life by the Drop My song pick seven years ago today: Creeden

3339. Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery

Image
From: Minstrel in the Gallery ; Year: 1975; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock Thus far today I've had this song incessantly on my mind, so again, I'm taking it as a sign to pick it. This is another one of their songs that goes from light to really heavy both musically and lyrically, plus the technicality and musicianship is amazing; thus it's always one I like a lot. Hear Minstrel in the Gallery on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Pink Floyd - High Hopes My song pick two years ago today: Megadeth - 99 Ways to Die My song pick three years ago today: Bachman & Turner - That's What It Is My song pick four years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Harbour Lights My song pick five years ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Plush My song pick six years ago today: Eddie Floyd - Knock on Wood My song pick seven years ago today: Jethro Tull - Pussy Willow My song pick eight years ago today: Bon Jovi featuring Big & Rich - We Got It Going On My s

3338. Mr. Bungle - Squeeze Me Macaroni

Image
From: Mr. Bungle ; Year: 1991; Genre: Jazz Rock/Funk/Metal Picking a very eclectic song for this Funky Friday from the niche band that should've been more popular than it was: Mr. Bungle. I guess it's kind of a stretch to call this one merely "funk" because that is but one of many forms utilized in it, but it is the basis. Hear Squeeze Me Macaroni on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: The Delfonics - Funny Feeling My song pick two years ago today: Alice in Chains - Heaven Beside You My song pick three years ago today: Paris - Red Rain My song pick four years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Destiny Calls My song pick five years ago today: The Who - Going Mobile My song pick six years ago today: Louis Armstrong - The Blues are Brewin' My song pick seven years ago today: The Beatles - Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End My song pick eight years ago today: Bruce Hornsby & the Range - The Way It Is My song pick nine years ago

3337. Neil Young - Mr. Soul

Image
From: Trans ; Year: 1982; Genre: Synth Rock/New Wave I had this synth heavy, new wave re-imagining of the Buffalo Springfield classic. Technically it's not a cover since it was written and sung by Neil Young, but it certainly is a different take on his early imagining. As a child who grew up during the synth era, I actually like this album and version of Mr. Soul a lot along with his other albums/songs of course. Hear Mr. Soul on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Lobo - A Simple Man My song pick two years ago today: Yes - Fly From Here (Suite) My song pick three years ago today: Pat Benatar - Invincible My song pick four years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize My song pick five years ago today: Freddy Taylor and His Swing Men from Harlem - Blue Drag My song pick six years ago today: Hans Zimmer - Fighting 17th My song pick seven years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - I Put a Spell on You My song pick eight years ago today: Ram

3336. Curved Air - Metamorphosis

Image
From: Air Cut ; Year: 1973; Genre: Progressive Rock I felt like picking some prog/rock this morning; it just fit my mood. I immediately went for one of my favourites from Curved Air. This is the longest track on the album and really showcases Eddie Jobson's piano/keyboard playing skills, but the entire band shines as well in this rather intricate song. Hear Metamorphosis on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Spencer Davis Group - I'm a Man My song pick two years ago today: Savatage - Streets My song pick three years ago today: Rammstein - Feuer und Wasser My song pick four years ago today: David Bowie - Let's Dance My song pick five years ago today: Rush - Distant Early Warning My song pick six years ago today: David Bowie - Oh! 3335. Waylon Jennings - Theme from 'The Dukes of Hazzard' (Good Ol' Boys)

Image
From: Music Man ; Year: 1980; Genre: Country I don't know why, but I had this song on my mind this morning, so I'm going ahead and picking it. Many, many people around my age grew up watching the classic television show The Dukes of Hazzard , and thus the theme is forever burnt in our collective minds. I still love the show and Waylon Jennings a lot and this theme was probably my gateway into his music. Hear Theme from 'The Dukes of Hazzard' (Good Ol' Boys) on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Jethro Tull - Up To Me My song pick two years ago today: Jethro Tull - A Time For Everything My song pick three years ago today: Megadeth - Wanderlust My song pick four years ago today: Pearls Before Swine - The Surrealist Waltz My song pick five years ago today: Queen - Spread Your Wings My song pick six years ago today: Rush - Working Man My song pick seven years ago today: Elmore James - The Sky is Crying My song pick eight years ago toda

3334. Wolfmother - The Eye of the Beholder

Image
From: Victorious ; Year: 2016; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal/Psychedelic Rock Yesterday whilst I was driving about I had some stuff from Wolfmother come on my player and I thought it would be a great time to pick another one of their songs; especially since they released a brand new album this year! Anyway, like most of their music, it sits better next to early 1970s hard hock/heavy metal than contemporary. They really use the raw power of that genesis of metal to drive their music in an interesting and quite unique way. Hear The Eye of the Beholder on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: Huey Lewis & the News - Jacob's Ladder My song pick two years ago today: Sho Nuff - Funkasize You My song pick three years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Mountain Jam My song pick four years ago today: Steve Vai - I Know You're Here My song pick five years ago today: Earthless - Godspeed My song pick six years ago today: Big Star - Thirteen My song pick seven y

3333. The Coasters - Three Cool Cats

Image
From: That Is Rock & Roll ; Year: 1964 (1959); Genre: R&B/Doo-Wop Almost everything's the number 3 today, so I had to pick an apropos song. 3332. Chicago - Saturday in the Park

Image
From: Chicago V ; Year: 1972; Genre: Rock When I was thinking about today's pick; this one just immediately popped into my mind; probably because it is in fact Saturday. This is one where the whimsical and light lyrics contrast but still work perfectly with the more complex music; yeah it's a good song for a holiday weekend. Hear Saturday in the Park on YouTube. 3330. Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 230 - Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden

Image
BWV 230 ; Year:~1700s~; Genre: Baroque Period/classical Wow, today marks the 9th anniversary of me starting this blog; it snuck up on me again. It's hard to believe that in a year I will have been doing this for an entire decade.... Anyway, as I always do, (or at least when I remember to do so), am picking one from J.S. Bach. Since a year ago I picked one of his few surviving motets, I figured I'd do another. This motet has no definite date of writing, and is quite unique amongst the other surviving examples of his motets, but is still full of all that he's known for; simply a great piece. Hear Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden on YouTube.
