Image
From: A Dramatic Turn of Events ; Year: 2011; Genre: Progressive Metal I've been meaning to pick one from Dream Theater for a while now, and am finally getting around to it. For some reason I thought I'd revisit their A Dramatic Turn of Events album once again; this is one of the longer compositions on the disc and I love the opening section with the of world music and other sounds, which only adds to the exotic nature of the song. 3609. Dream Theater - When Your Time Has Come

Image
From: The Astonishing ; Year: 2016; Genre: Progressive Rock This is one of the prettier songs and one of my favourites off their The Astonishing album. When Your Time Has Come is a very accessible song similar to what you'd hear from late 1970s Styx to my ears; I especially love the synth in the intro. Hear When Your Time Has Come on YouTube. 3361/62. Dream Theater - Descent of the NOMACs/Dystopian Overture

Image
From: The Astonishing ; Year: 2016; Genre: Progressive Metal I know it's nine months late since it was released, but I've finally got around to listening to Dream Theater's new album; I have to say, I like wot I hear. The album is 2 CDs and 24 songs in length, but The Astonishing part, (pun intended), is that the majority of the songs are under 5 minutes in length and only a single on is over 7 minutes. As you probably could guess, The Astonishing is a rock opera set in a future bereft of music in a totalitarian state and the struggle to bring freedom and music back, of course. In that way thematically it's of course very similar to concept albums like Styx's Kilroy Was Here , the unreleased The Who concept Lifehouse , and Rush's 2112 , which is of course one of Dream Theater's main influences. Whilst having a similar theme that's been used a lot, they keep it very original both in the narrative of the general epic and of course there's no othe...

2394 Dream Theater - Pull Me Under

Image
From: Images and Words ; Year: 1992; Genre: Progressive Metal I had a song from Dream Theater earworming me today, (yeah, that's quite a feat for a progressive metal song to earworm you), but unfortunately I had already chosen it . So... wot's keeping me from picking another one of the songs from their early period? It's a pretty cool song in many ways, but I really like Queesrÿcheish quality and/or time period of sound that permeates this piece. Hear the full album version of Pull Me Under on YouTube. Watch the music video clip to Pull Me Under on YouTube. 2294 Dream Theater - These Walls

Image
From: Octavarium ; Year: 2006; Genre: Progressive Metal As you can see above I'm trying out using larger images of the album art; thus far I like it and I'll probably keep it up. Anyway, after my pick yesterday I thought I should pick a song from the actual band. This is one that a friend of mine thought I should listen to; while I don't have the album Octavarium , I have heard some of the songs on it. I don't know if I heard this one in the past, but it was a good time to hear it again if I had. As part of this concept album's song cycle based on an octave, since this is the third song, it is written in the key of A after the previous song on the album, which was written in the key of G and so on. Like my friend told me this one has a very good message and has a lot of meaning to those who have a barrier they must overcome to fit into society. Hear These Walls on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Rush - Stick it Out My song pick two years...

2247 Dream Theater - The Looking Glass

Image
From: Dream Theater ; Year: 2013; Genre: Progressive Metal I guess we're closing out another month; to me it seems like it just began, it went by quick. Anyway, after Max informed me the other day about this new album from Dream Theater I thought I would check it out. I find it interesting that it took almost 30 years (or about 25 if you only count their albums) to have a self-titled album. This is one of the first tracks I heard off of Dream Theater's self-titled album, it's a pretty good song, and very much of what you'd expect from the band. Hear The Looking Glass on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Deep Purple - Hush My song pick two years ago today: Paris - Big Towne, 2061 My song pick three years ago today: Band of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You My song pick four years ago today: Alan Menken and Howard Ashman - Feed Me (Git It) (From: Little Shop of Horrors ) My song pick five years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR...

2193 Dream Theater - Learning to Live

Image
From: Images and Words ; Year: 1994; Genre: Progressive Metal Images and Words is one of, if not my favourite, Dream Theater album; there is just so much great music to be had throughout the disc. This, the closing track, which comes from the pen of bassist John Myung, is one of many excellent songs to be heard; an incredible 11+ minutes of great music that is. Hear Learning to Live on YouTube. My song pick a year ago today: Franz Schubert - D 911, Op. 89 - Die Winterreise My song pick two years ago today: Bon Jovi - Runaway My song pick three years ago today: Missing Link - Spoiled Love My song pick four years ago today: Grace Slick - Angel of the Night My song pick five years ago today: Don Williams - Yellow Moon

1992 Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon

Image
From: Images and Words ; Year: 1992; Genre: Progressive Metal I can remember music from the year 1992, (which is also today's song pick number), quite well. But one aspect that I remember the most was the minimalism that permeated most forms of mainstream music, mostly in the alternative rock/metal subgenres. Those bands and the emerging sounds were definitely a breath of fresh air from the stagnating music scene at the time; even to this day I listen to most of those bands from that time. However, as with all musical trends they became a bit too hard-line; I got the feeling at times that the "minimalist" point of view was overused, sometimes to the point that a band or a musician would be shunned and ridiculed if they got too technical with their music. Dream Theater was one of the bands to go against that grain of popular music and still prosper. Anyway, here's a song off of one of my favourite Dream Theater albums: Images and Words . However, it's facil...

1914 Dream Theater - Lie

Image
From: Awake ; Year: 1994; Genre: Progressive Metal I'm having one of my off days, but I'm pushing through despite it. Anyway, here's one that fits my mood; its of what I refer to as my "attitude songs." The heavy sound and the technical musical velocity combine together to make for one kick ass song in many ways. Hear Lie on YouTube. Watch the music video on YouTube.
