William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Hysteria ; Year: 1987; Genre: Hard Rock/Glam Metal Had this one come on the radio whilst driving around this morning. Normally do not listen to actual over-the-air broadcasts anymore, but was in my older car with a stereo from the 1990s installed, so it was wot I had. Rocket is one of their biggest hits, but admittedly the sound is very much a product of its time, so it instantly takes you back when it comes on.   Hear Rocket on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jigsaw - Just Another Clown   My song pick 2 years ago today: Living Colour - Sunshine Of Your Love   My song pick 3 years ago today: Kansas - All The World   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Part Time Lover   My song pick 5 years ago today: 30 Seconds to Mars - Echelon My song pick 6 years ago today: Blind Melon - Deserted My song pick 7 years ago today: Forest - Graveyard My song pick 8 years ago today: Billy Joel - Laura My song pick 9 years ...

From: Yeah! ; Year: 2006; Genre: Glam Rock I had this cover of the classic David Essex tune running through my mind this morning and as usual I decided I should choose it. They really do a great job of keeping the spirit of the original song whilst making it their own. Hear Rock On on YouTube. 1327 Def Leppard - Waterloo Sunset From: Yeah!, Year: 2006 Day number four of my cover song theme week. As fate would have it again last night I heard this cover of my favourite Kinks song and I immediately knew I had my next pick. A few years ago, or so it seemed, many established bands started recording obligatory cover albums featuring songs from the bands that influenced them most; Yeah! was Def Leppard's. It was really the first album they've released since Hysteria that I was willing to part with my money for. Don't get me wrong, they've released some good songs since then, but not enough to make me want an entire album. Anyway, I have to say that they did the song justice, it's nowhere near as good as the original Kinks' version in my opinion, but it is an excellent cover all the same. Oi vay! Another late pick on Sunday... I guess that I'll pick this one that I heard while on the road recently. This song epitomizes the popular Def Leppard sound that made them famous. The one word that I think sums up this song for me is "tight," the vocal harmonies and instruments are blended quite well. Here is the music video on YouTube. +

For some reason this song was going through my head this morning, so I figured that it was time to pick it. Def Leppard is another band that I like, but have never fully gotten into. In this song the vocals are one of the big draws as well as the guitar work. Here is the studio version on YouTube. +
