Wow! Where did June go? Sped right on by without me noticing or so it would seem.
Anyway, I had every intention to choose a funky track by an artist I rarely pick, but I just couldn't get this landmark record off my mind; is that a bad thing? I think absolutely not!
Unfunky UFO is kind of a hidden gem on the album, if you will, being dwarfed by its larger-than-life-itself brethren from the record. So much more musically going on throughout this one than just an amazing funk track; this one would stand up well with the best progressive rock songs out there in my opinion, and you can get down and boogie to it to boot. This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style.
