Last week I totally boned it and did not make a Funky Friday Pick; not letting that mistake happen two weeks in a row....
Anyway, with Veteran's Day, [known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world], being observed this Friday, (even though it will be tomorrow officially being 11/11 at the 11th hour, which marked the end of WWI), this rather apt-titled and themed funk record just seemed like a great fit. It's another one of those situations with this instrumental song in particular where the only criticism I have is that it is not long enough to fully enjoy without playing it again.

From: Movements 2 ; Year: 2006; Genre: Funk/Soul Thinking about choosing something from Tobias Kirmayer's Movements series of deep funk and soul cuts. This one seems to be among the rarer songs from the compilations; all I can really find out about it is that it was recorded at the end of the 1960 and released in either '70 or '71. He really did a service to us fans of these obscure and forgotten tracks; apparently an original 45rpm single runs upward of $90 plus as far as I can tell. Anyway, if you like some real raw, unfiltered funk this one will be right up your alleyway. From: Ponderous ; Year: 1991; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk Trying to think of a different song to pick today, but this one that I have not heard in ages just keeps playing in my brain, so, what the heck? Right? I remember hearing this one a lot back then on the radio; I really think it is the overall weirdness and genre defying sound that really made this one, and others from the group, as popular as it was. From: A New Time - A New Day ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Soul Don't know wot it is like elsewhere in the world, but today marks the start of Daylight Savings Time over here, which really sucks. I felt the need to pick something more appropriate for the occasion. One of the first tracks that came to mind was The Chambers Brothers' classic Time Has Come Today , which I had already picked. However, on the followup album they had this apt title track, which absolutely fit wot I needed, and love those lead vocals a lot. Whilst I have never gotten full-on into this band, every time I hear one of their tracks immediately I like it. From: Close Company ; Year: 1984; Genre: Soul/Funk Had a bunch of Lou Rawls' songs on my mind today; this is one I truthfully thought I had already picked, but it is understandable with how much I play this song in particular. I have said it before, but for me, no matter the track, Lou Rawls' voice is one of the most comforting. From: Still Life ; Year: 1976; Genre: Progressive Rock Probably the last time I will be posting a track from Still Life , which is one of favourites from VdGG. It's not surprising with both how much I like it and the fact that they're one of the bands that released full records with five or six very long songs on it; with this one originally with only five. At around eight minutes in length, My Room is kind of the median length wise with two longer and two shorter songs on it. 1619 Ludwig Van Beethoven - Op. 31 No. 2 - Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor "Tempest" Opus 31 No. 2, Year: 1802-1803 Genre: Classical Period/classical Being that it's a crazy day out there on the interweb, I decided I would pick a nice piece of Classic music instead of the stuff from the last 80 or so years like I normally would. Just like his other piano music, this one is a truly beautiful piece of music. If no one noticed a great deal of popular websites have put up a self-imposed blackout here in the U.S. in protest of two bills that are currently going through the process in congress. You can find out the particulars of the SOPA and PIPA laws for yourself on Wikipedia . I almost joined them in their protest by blacking out my blog, but really, only a few regular readers would miss it, so I figured if I did it, it would just seem overtly pretentious.
