6371. Genesis - Get 'Em Out by Friday

From: Foxtrot; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock |
Listened to Genesis' Foxtrot album again yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it once more. Got me thinking about Genesis and how, as not amongst the most rabid of fans of the band, but I really enjoy their music a lot, how I never really got into the whole loving/hating one period of the band due to the different comings and goings of band members and thus the contrasting styles from one decade to the next. That being said, they're probably one of the most successful groups to change lead singers and stay on top. Truthfully, I cannot choose between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins; they are both amazing in my book, and Phil is a monster drummer to boot.
Personally, I really believe that Peter Gabriel's vocals were at a peak at this point, and it show on this track. Kind of a comedic social commentary on greed, specifically concerning landlords, he uses the Leid format in which he plays the parts of four different characters in the mini opera vocally. It follows a land owner, John Pebble, who directs one of his men, Mark Hall, to empty low rent tenants out, so it can be redeveloped for greater profit. One tenant, Mrs. Barrow refuses, so John Pebble raises her rent to astronomical levels and is given some money and agrees to leave, but is hit with even higher rent in her new rental anyway. The song then goes forty years in the future where a man named "Joe Everybody" comments about how a company named Genetic Control is buying up property and decreed that people will be restricted to being a maximum of four feet tall as to maximize the amount of tenants in their new, compact living spaces.
Whilst it is kind of a bit out there subject matter wise, the way the song was written, performed, and sung really keeps you engaged, even if you are not someone who likes deeper music both lyrically and musically.
