William's Song a Day Blog - est. September 2007

From: Cosmo's Factory ; Year: 1970; Genre: Blues Rock Whilst making dinner yesterday I decided to listen to some music and music from this album was one of the highlights. At just over seven minutes in length, this happens to be the second longest song on the record, which is saying something. However, even at the radio-unfriendly length it's not really that noticeable; the blues heavy sound and amazing music throughout will keep you entertained. The cherry on top, so to speak, is in my opinion that great guitar solo/instrumental section, which takes up a goodly amount of the track. From: Black Bear Road ; Year: 1975; Genre: Country I just discovered that C.W. McCall had passed away back on the 1st of April at the young age of 93 from cancer apparently. Back when I was really young my Dad had, I believe, his first three or four albums on vinyl; it been quite a while since I've seen them, so my memory is a tad bit fuzzy. Anyway, as with many young children growing up I was infatuated with trucks, cars, etc... and since a goodly portion of C.W. McCall's music had to do with such I listened to a lot of his music early on, so it's kind of a melancholy day for me. From: Dandy in the Underworld ; Year: 1977; Genre: Glam Rock Realized that I had not chosen another song from T. Rex in quite a long while, so, since I was thinking about them and their music I thought it would be a good time to pick another one. This was one of the singles off of their final studio album and is among my favourites from the band. From: Hell ; Year: 1974; Genre: Soul/Funk/R&B A new month is upon us, it's a Friday, and it's April Fools' Day to boot. With all of these things happening I had a bit of a boggle as to an appropriate song I should choose and I came up with this one. This is an often-covered jazz standard written back in the 1930s and has been recorded many times since by many different artists; James Brown actually recorded it a few times apparently. From: Nilsson Schmilsson ; Year: 1971; Genre: Hard Rock Here's another one from an artist that I have neglected to choose a song from prior. Whilst many think of mostly ballads when it comes to Harry Nilsson's material, this one is quite a hard rocker with an amazing rhythm section, especially the amazing Herbie Flowers' bass, where he pulls off some unorthodox techniques such as apparently de-tuning his bass while playing.
