6998. Iain Matthews - Close the Door Lightly When You Go

From: Tigers Will Survive; Year: 1972; Genre: Folk Rock/Country Rock
A rather pretty track from one of Iain Matthews' earlier solo albums that does not seem to get the attention it requires. This was his third solo record after leaving Fairport Convention. You can still hear the British folk rock influence quite a lot on this song in particular.

6997. ABBA - Should I Laugh or Cry

-
Image
From: The Visitors ; Year: 1981; Genre: Synthpop Finally had the opportunity to listen to the deluxe edition of my favourite of ABBA's records, and man, I am glad that I did. Not sure as to why I waited so long to hear these mostly b-side singles; a few of them I actually had, but this was not one of them. Completely new music to me, so it is a positive in all regards. As with all of their music from The Visitors , this one on the surface is a synth heavy pop track of the era, but is deceptively complex with a lot of nuance and small ideas that add up to something much more than meets the eye. I mean, if one does not want to pay attention to the deep and quite interesting music, it is a very fun and danceable track with lyrics concerning the ending of a close relationship, whilst being heavy subject matter, their delivery is, again, such that you can just sit back and enjoy or delve deeper and enjoy just as much.   Hear Should I Laugh or Cry on YouTube.        ...

6994. ZZ Top - I Heard It On the X

-
Image
From: Fandango! ; Year: 1975; Genre: Southern Rock/Blues Rock Wow, a whole new, fresh, and unused month starts today; let's start it in style. Actually had this short, but sweet tune from the 'Tres Hombres' from Texas on my mind the last couple of days; of course, you know wot that means.... The "X" they are referring to on this track is the now silent " Border Blaster " radio station out of Mexico: XEROK-AM, aka X-Rock 80. From wot I understand, the station was actually quite popular north of the border and on favourable nights could be heard across the Southwest U.S.. A little trivia: here in the U.S., unless the radio/television station is older than the law and thus grandfathered in, all broadcast stations east of the Mississippi River have their call letters start with a "W", and those west of the river have theirs start with a "K." As far as I am aware Mexican broadcast stations' call letters, as with XEROK start with an ...

From: Sally May/Boogie Chillen' ; Year: 1948; Genre: Blues I don't know why really, but just had to pick this one from the immortal blues man and guitar virtuoso John Lee Hooker after listening to it a few times recently.
