6116. Ray Stevens - The Rockin' Teenage Mummies

Image
From: It Only Hurts When I Laugh/The Rockin' Teenage Mummies ; Year: 1965; Genre: Rock 'n Roll/Comedy I really do not believe there are many out there with such an extensive catalogue of original novelty comedy songs than Ray Stevens; he sure did write a lot of classics over the years. This one was the B-Side of a single release that, whilst is original, it contains a lot of musical ideas from his other songs of the time. If you are at all familiar with his hits from this time, you'll surely pick up on them.   Hear The Rockin' Teenage Mummies on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Hollies - Carrie Anne   My song pick 2 years ago today: Europe - Stormwind   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dazz Band - Let It All Blow   My song pick 4 years ago today: Faith No More - Epic   My song pick 5 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - Too Shy To Say My song pick 6 years ago today: The Postal Service - Brand New Colony My song pick 7 years ago ...

6115. Fates Warning - Outside Looking In

Image
From: Inside Out ; Year: 1994; Genre: Progressive Metal I suppose you could call this song the "title track," or perhaps the anti-title track might be more appropriate... wotever the case, it is the lead track and a dang good one.   Hear Outside Looking In on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Toad The Wet Sprocket - Fall Down   My song pick 2 years ago today: James Brown - Out Of Sight   My song pick 3 years ago today: Glenn Miller - PEnnsylvania 6 - 5000   My song pick 4 years ago today: Nirvana - Negative Creep   My song pick 5 years ago today: Gravity Kills - Falling My song pick 6 years ago today: The Network - Roshambo My song pick 7 years ago today: Glass Tiger - Animal Heart My song pick 8 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - Can't Strain My Brain My song pick 9 years ago today: Paris - 1 in 10 My song pick 10 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Look Into the Sun My song pick 11 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Ov...

6114. The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday

Image
From: Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones LTD. ; Year: 1967; Genre: Pop/Psychedelic Rock Pleasant Valley Sunday just happened to pop into my mind whilst thinking about today's song that I should pick. It's a good, aptly-titled track from the "Prefab Four" that pokes fun at the whole suburban lifestyle that is rife much of human-kind's shortcomings, only slightly hidden beneath a superficial guise. In actuality, I have always liked this one if for nothing more than the musicianship, vocals, and production value.   Hear Pleasant Valley Sunday on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: E.U. 6113. Chad Allan & The Expressions (The Guess Who) - Theme from a Music Box

Image
From: Shakin' All Over ; Year: 1965; Genre: Garage Rock I absolutely love coming back to this record to hear early music from what would become The Guess Who. Apparently this song was not released on the Canadian pressing, but was on the one released in The States. A very beautiful piece from the pen of songwriter and musician extraordinaire Randy Bachman.   Hear Theme from a Music Box on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steely Day - Night By Night   My song pick 2 years ago today: Coven - One Tin Soldier   My song pick 3 years ago today: Information Society - What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Fare Thee Well   My song pick 5 years ago today: Yes - Changes My song pick 6 years ago today: Santana - Evil Ways My song pick 7 years ago today: Gerry Rafferty - The Tourist My song pick 8 years ago today: Loudness - Let It Go My song pick 9 years ago today: Carmen - She Flew Ac...

6112. Rose Royce - Keep On Keepin' On

Image
From: Car Wash (soundtrack) ; Year: 1976; Genre: Soul/Funk Been extremely busy the last couple of days and am just now finally getting around to making today's pick. Something from the Car Wash soundtrack by the one and only Rose Royce just seemed like a great choice.   Hear Keep On Keepin' On on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bob Marley & The Wailers - Midnight Ravers   My song pick 2 years ago today: Earl Slick - Surfer Junkie Dude   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - Time and Motion   My song pick 4 years ago today: Alestorm - No Quarter   My song pick 5 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - The Changing Times My song pick 6 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Train Oasis My song pick 7 years ago today: Johnny Winter - Blinded by Love My song pick 8 years ago today: The Moody Blues - In the Beginning/Lovely to See You Again My song pick 9 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Tripudium Ad Bellum My song pick 10 ...

6111. John Denver - Mother Nature's Son

Image
From: Rocky Mountain High ; Year: 1972; Genre: Folk/Rock John Denver was one of the biggest fans of The Beatles, and you can tell by how many songs of theirs he covered and their influence on his own music and playing. Funny enough, I heard John Denver's version many times before I heard the original; my Mom is also a huge fan of John Denver and played him a lot. Anyway, I really like the way he arranged this one with more of a stripped-down acoustic country folk sound; he definitely did it justice.   Hear Mother Nature's Son on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rossington Collins Band - Don't Misunderstand Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: ABBA - Just a Notion   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jigsaw - Freud Fish   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - Faithless   My song pick 5 years ago today: Our Lady Peace - Starseed My song pick 6 years ago today: David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) My song pick 7 years ago...

6110. Them - Gloria

Image
From: The "Angry" Young Them ; Year: 1965; Genre: Rock/Pop This is one that much of the older generations will surely recognize and maybe some younger as well. For those unaware, Them was a band from Northern Ireland in which singer/songwriter Van Morrison would "cut his teeth" so to speak; they had a few hits in their brief tenure with this being the biggest. Van Morrison would, of course, go on to global success after the disillusion of Them, but they were a good band in somewhat of the vain of The Kinks and such.   Hear Gloria on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Vince Guaraldi - Red Baron   My song pick 2 years ago today: Dire Straits - The Bug   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon   My song pick 4 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Star   My song pick 5 years ago today: Living Colour - Type My song pick 6 years ago today: Dream Theater - A New Beginning My song pick 7 years ago today: Quee...
