6252. Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party

Image
From: Dead Man's Party ; Year: 1985; Genre: New Wave/Rock Happy Halloween! As always, I am choosing an appropriate song for the holiday; this time it is the classic from Danny Elfman's band Oingo Boingo. Yeah, it certainly seems that a goodly amount of the best Halloween music was made in the 1980s.   Hear Dead Man's Party on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Coven - Black Sabbath   My song pick 2 years ago today: Muse - You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween   My song pick 3 years ago today: Black Sabbath - When Death Calls   My song pick 4 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath   My song pick 5 years ago today: Helloween - The Time of the Oath   My song pick 6 years ago today: Concrete Blonde - Darkening of the Light My song pick 7 years ago today: Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name My song pick 8 years ago today: Misterio - Stinking Zombies My song pick 9 years ago today: Helloween - Halloween My song ...

6251. Sugarcult - Memory

Image
From: Palm Trees and Power Lines ; Year: 2004; Genre: Indie Rock/Alternative Rock/Punk I remember back, about 15 to 20 years ago there was an amazing crop of indie artists that still to this day I follow; one of them was Sugarcult. This band is yet another amongst many that I seemingly erroneously believe that I have already chosen a song from, but obviously have not. Memory was in fact the first song that I heard from the band and that hooked me for good. The high energy punk vibe combined with the maudlin subject matter and lyrics really make a great pairing.   Hear Memory on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - White Flags   My song pick 2 years ago today: Billie Holiday - If The Moon Turns Green   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rolling Stones - Laugh, I Nearly Died   My song pick 4 years ago today: Joe Tex - Ain't Gonna Bump No More   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ugly Kid Joe - Under the Bottom   My son...

6250. Tears for Fears - Power

Image
From: Elemental ; Year: 1993; Genre: New Wave/Alternative Rock Elemental has easily been my personal favourite album from Tears for Fears since I first heard it. There is something about the production and mixing that makes every note and beat easily heard and yet makes a full, aural symphonic sound all together. Anyway, this is another great track from the record across the board in that emotional sound and style they created during that time.   Hear Power on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jimi Hendrix - In From the Storm   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dazz Band - Magnetized   My song pick 4 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Another Rainy Night (Without You)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Every Home is Wired   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Cranberries - Dreams My song pick 7 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Queen of ...

6249. Marillion - The Crow and the Nightingale

Image
From: An Hour Before It's Dark ; Year: 2022; Genre: Progressive Rock Had them on my mind again today and thought I would listen to their most recent studio album once again. This is one of the three songs that is self-contained and not consisting of multiple sub-tracks. Very pretty and powerful emotionally; a perfect song as always from Marillion.    Hear The Crow and the Nightingale on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Hawkwind - Master of the Universe   My song pick 2 years ago today: Gap Band - Burn Rubber On Me (Why Do You Wanna Hurt Me)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steve Vai - Tender Surrender   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Kinks - You Really Got Me My song pick 5 years ago today: Faith No More - Cone of Shame   My song pick 6 years ago today: April Wine - One More Time My song pick 7 years ago today: Riggs - Heartbeat My song pick 8 years ago today: Dazz Band - To the Roof My song pick 9 yea...

6248. Phil Lesh & Friends - Celebration

Image
From: There and Back Again ; Year: 2002; Genre: Rock The other day I saw that renowned bassist and songwriter Phil Lesh passed away. Most would probably know him as the bassist for The Grateful Dead, but he also had this project and toured with the later incarnations of The Grateful Dead since Jerry Garcia passed away almost 30 years ago. Anyway, this is the lead track from Phil Lesh & Friends' only studio album with a very apt title/message.    Hear Celebration on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Primus - Mama Didn't Raise No Fool   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - Spindrift   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - Secret Touch   My song pick 4 years ago today: Megadeth - Never Walk Alone... 6246/47. Gloryhammer - Anstruther's Dark Prophecy/The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee

Image
From: Tales From The Kingdom of Fife ; Year: 2013; Genre: Power Metal Here is where the epic story told by Gloryhammer began! The evil wizard Zargothrax invades the Kingdom of Fife with a horde of undead unicorns as told in a dark prophesy. Our hero must now go forth and meet this foe in mortal combat as the tale is retold in power metal song!   Hear Anstruther's Dark Prophecy/The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Gerry Rafferty - Can I Have My Money Back?   My song pick 2 years ago today: Billy Joel - Vienna   My song pick 3 years ago today: Quasar - Logic?   My song pick 4 years ago today: Lenny Kravitz - Circus   My song pick 5 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Starlight   My song pick 6 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Ooby Dooby My song pick 7 years ago today: Fats Domino - I'm Walkin' My song pick 8 years ago today: Ultravox - Dancing with Tears in My...

6245. Whodini - Freaks Come Out at Night

Image
From: Escape ; Year: 1984; Genre: Hip-Hop/Funk/Electronica/Rap Last Funky Friday before Halloween, so I'm not letting it go by without an appropriate pick. The 1980s seemed to have a trove of excellent funk flavoured creepy songs; this seasonal party favourite exemplifies this; pure funky freaky fun!   Hear Freaks Come Out at Night on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Stuart Hamm - I Want to Know   My song pick 2 years ago today: Diesel - Leader Of The Pac-Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: Al Stewart - Flying Sorcery   My song pick 4 years ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Down   My song pick 5 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Fire & Ice   My song pick 6 years ago today: Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - Weed Whacker My song pick 7 years ago today: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band- The Fire Down Below My song pick 8 years ago today: Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) My song pick 9 years ago today:...

6244. Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Image
From: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ; Year: 1968; Genre: Hard Rock/Psychedelic Rock Off and on over the last 17-plus years or so I've been at this blog been meaning to either pick or erroneously believing that I already chose this legendary psychedelic proto-metal classic and am now finally doing so. I don't know exactly wot it is about this song for me personally, I do not think about it much, but when I do I immediately crank it and "rock out." It has always been one that most people enjoy and has been in popular culture off and on over the years. Probably almost everyone has heard that infectious, grinding riff and will immediately start dancing, but that organ solo at the beginning will always grab your attention for sure.   Hear In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Donovan - Riki Tiki Tavi   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Man of God   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser   My song pick 4...

6243. Dick Dale - Take It Or Leave It

Image
From: Unknown Territory ; Year: 1994; Genre: Surf Rock Surf guitar rock is and will always be one of my favourite sub-genres; of course the late-great originator and master Dick Dale is always at the top. This is an amazing piece with more than just the dripping wet virtuoso guitar wrapped in a 12-bar blues, it is simply mindblowing musically.   Hear Take It Or Leave It on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: John Denver - Fire and Rain/The Box   My song pick 2 years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Testify   My song pick 3 years ago today: Nightwish - Harvest   My song pick 4 years ago today: Kool and the Gang - Funky Granny   My song pick 5 years ago today: Soundgarden - Blood on the Valley Floor   My song pick 6 years ago today: Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Away From Home My song pick 7 years ago today: King Crimson - The Night Watch My song pick 8 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Trains My song pi...

6242. Megadeth - Killing Time

Image
From: The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead ; Year: 2022; Genre: Thrash Metal Just felt like some Megadeth today; this is one of the singles off their most recent album; has that excellent sound as expected.    Watch the video clip on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Chicago - Colour My World   My song pick 2 years ago today: Devo - Shout   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ebony Rhythm Band - Get Yourself Together (Smiling Phases/Sunshine of Your Love Medley)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Genesis - Harold the Barrel   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Kinks - Apeman   My song pick 6 years ago today: David Bowie - China Girl My song pick 7 years ago today: The Beatles - A Day in the Life My song pick 8 years ago today: Paris - Blue Robin My song pick 9 years ago today: Dick Dale - Third Stone From the Sun My song pick 10 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - The Revenge of Vera Gemini My song pick 11 years ago ...

6241. The Bob Seger System - Lucifer

Image
From: Mongrel ; Year: 1970; Genre: Rock 'n Roll/Blues Rock This is one from the earlier period of Bob Seger's musical career fronting his first band. Just a great track to dance along to; that organ playing alone makes it incredible.   Hear Lucifer on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Young Rascals - Good Lovin'   My song pick 2 years ago today: Parliament - The Goose   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Tire Me   My song pick 4 years ago today: Django Reinhardt - Echoes of Spain   My song pick 5 years ago today: Van der Graaf Generator - Chemical World   My song pick 6 years ago today: Don Henley - Heart of the Matter My song pick 7 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby and the Range - On The Western Sky My song pick 8 years ago today: Parliament - Children of Production My song pick 9 years ago today: Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love My song pick 10 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Parano...

6240. Neil Young - The Loner

Image
From: Neil Young ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock/Folk Rock This is one of Neil Young's songs that I personally identify with probably the most; have never been one to feel comfortable around others for long and knowing when to take my leave. He uses a lot of good instrumentation, but doesn't go overboard. That organ and, of course, the guitar are just exquisite along with the emotions he stirs with his vocals. Funny enough, being a big Neil Young fan myself it is strange how I heard the cover by Three Dog Night first; only later finding the original.   Hear The Loner on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bootsy's Rubber Band - Munchies for Your Soul   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Just Look At Me Now   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Kinks - Money Talks   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Humboldt Currant   My song pick 5 years ago today: Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower   My...

6239. Curved Air - Once a Ghost, Always a Ghost

Image
From: Phantasmagoria ; Year: 1972; Genre: Progressive Rock This is a rather odd one, but in a great way. I love the different, syncopated lyrics along with the somewhat disjointed music with the Latin/Jazz flavour.   Hear Once a Ghost, Always a Ghost on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Cybotron - Ride To Infinity   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Edgar Winter Group - Animal   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Eagles - The Disco Strangler   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Meliora Sequamur   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Delgados - Strathcona Slung   My song pick 6 years ago today: Genesis - Misunderstanding My song pick 7 years ago today: Pallas - The Blinding Darkness of Science My song pick 8 years ago today: Aerosmith - Remember (Walking in the Sand) My song pick 9 years ago today: AC/DC - Money Talks My song pick 10 years ago today: The Doors - People are Strange My song pick 11 years ...

6238. Lou Rawls - Season of the Witch

Image
From: The Way It Was The Way It Is ; Year: 1969; Genre: Soul/Funk/R&B I could probably have Mr. Rawls playing for weeks on end and wouldn't get tired of hearing that legendary voice. Here's a seasonal pick from the classic performer doing a cover originally written and recorded by Donovan.   Hear Season of the Witch on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ultravox - Someone Else's Clothes   My song pick 2 years ago today: Christopher Cross - Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Asia - True Colors   My song pick 4 years ago today: Elton John - Ego My song pick 5 years ago today: George Duke - Funny Funk   My song pick 6 years ago today: Steeleye Span - We Shall Wear Midnight My song pick 7 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Over the Hills and Far Away My song pick 8 years ago today: Queen - Another One Bites the Dust My song pick 9 years ago today: U.K. - In the Dead of the Night My song pic...

6237. The Kinks - Do You Remember Walter?

Image
From: The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock/Pop Still in the mood for The Kinks on this Thursday. This is a very upbeat and happy tune with lyrics that are anything but in, of course, a way only Ray Davies would write. Musically it reminds me a lot of Electric Light Orchestra's music that you'd hear about a decade later; their monster hit Mr. Blue Sky in particular. However, as stated prior, the lyrics are kind of both introspective and judgemental concerning meeting up with an old best friend, (Walter), only to find that the best friend kind of withered and gave up on his dreams they once shared and now it is as if they are merely strangers with Walter not caring about the stories his old friend tried to tell.    Hear Do You Remember Walter? on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Genesis - Dancing with the Moonlit Knight   My song pick 2 years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Abaddon's Bolero ...

6236. The Kinks - No Return

Image
From: Something Else By The Kinks ; Year: 1966; Genre: Rock Have no idea why, but just felt like choosing something from The Kinks today; from this era in particular.     Hear No Return on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Who - Baba O'Riley   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Isley Brothers - Shout (Parts I + II)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bee Gees - Boogie Child   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rufus & Chaka Khan - Jive Talkin'   My song pick 5 years ago today: Iron Maiden - Run Silent Run Deep   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - Citadel My song pick 7 years ago today: Dire Straits - Down to the Waterline My song pick 8 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Into the Void My song pick 9 years ago today: Stanely Clarke - Vulcan Princess My song pick 10 years ago today: Black Flag - Annihilate This Week My song pick 11 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Hey Hey, My My ...

6235. Blue Öyster Cult - Power Underneath Despair

Image
From: Heaven Forbid ; Year: 1998; Genre: Hard Rock Been busy and stressful as of late, but I always have bands such as BÖC to get me through. I really like Eric Bloom's vocals on this one; gives it that "edge" that makes it a great track.    Hear Power Underneath Despair on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dolly Parton - Mule Skinner Blues (Blue Yodel No. 8)   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Zombies - Time Of The Season   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sweat Band - Freak to Freak   My song pick 4 years ago today: Van der Graaf Generator - Orthenthian St (Parts I & II)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Steve Vai - The Crying Machine   My song pick 6 years ago today: Rush - Territories My song pick 7 years ago today: Charley Pride - Kiss an Angel Good Mornin' My song pick 8 years ago today: Matthews' Southern Comfort - Woodstock My song pick 9 years ago today: King Crimson - Lament My song pick 10 years ag...

6234. 4 Non Blondes - Drifting

Image
From: Bigger, Better, Faster, More! ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock Here is one that shows that even when acoustic with limited accompaniment a song can be very heavy; really feel the mood and brooding feeling from this one.     Hear Drifting on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: England Dan & John Ford Coley - It's Sad To Belong   My song pick 2 years ago today: Primus - Follow The Fool   My song pick 3 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Quest for the Hammer of Glory   My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Nightmare Epiphany   My song pick 5 years ago today: Rod Stewart - (I Know) I'm Losing You   My song pick 6 years ago today: Lawrence Gowan - Moonlight Desires My song pick 7 years ago today: Boston - Used to be Bad News My song pick 8 years ago today: Rhythm Machine - Everybody's Chippin My song pick 9 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Fallen Angel My song pick 10 years ago today: Foo Fight...

6233. Rezső Seress - Vége a világnak (The World is Ending)

Image
Year: 1933; Genre: Popular Music Here is a very interesting piece of music, which most would know by alternate lyrics and a different title: Gloomy Sunday (also known as " The Hungarian Suicide Song "), only sharing the music. However, the original version: The World is Ending, has an even sadder subject matter when you realize that the composer wrote the song seeing Europe sinking deeper and darker into what would climax as World War 2, especially in his native Hungary. Reading only the lyrics is enough to bring chills and scare you, especially knowing how prophetic and detailed it turned out to be. With all that is going on in the world today it is ironic how people will ignore history and just keep mindlessly repeating it.   Hear the song with the latter lyrics YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Soul Shakers - You Ain't My Brother   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Contours - Do You Love Me   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Who ...

6232. Jethro Tull - Back to the Family

Image
From: Stand Up ; Year 1969; Genre: Hard Rock/Blues Rock Felt like hearing some of the earlier 'Tull material; their second and third albums have always been ones I especially love. You can really feel the raw, youthful energy and how the band was still finding their direction. Anyway, this one comes from their second album, Stand Up , and is a rather raucous blues rock track that has very interesting individual sections that starts out at a low volume and goes back and forth into a much louder section, which it stays in throughout the flute and guitar solos.   Hear Back to the Family on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Klaatu - Hope   My song pick 2 years ago today: Midnight Oil - We Resist   My song pick 3 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Borderline   My song pick 4 years ago today: Yes - Mood for a Day My song pick 5 years ago today: The Beatles - Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Who - Athena ...
