6495. Stacy Q - The River

Image
From: Hard Machine ; Year: 1986; Genre: New Wave/Pop Here is another that I have not heard probably in over 35 year or more, but it comes and goes in my mind nevertheless. Finally thought I would try to find out the song's title and who performed it, but all the search engines were giving me utter crap and non-sequitur results for the lyrics I could remember almost like all of them were intentionally misleading me. Finally I had to think of female vocalists from back in the 80s and 90s who sung in a lower register, which actually does not narrow it down all that much with how many women in music back then did not get into earsplitting range as much. I think my brain actually knew who it was because Stacy Q's was one of the first that came to mind, and sure enough, I was right. Very much mid '80s electronic new wave pop, but has actually aged extremely well. The River especially reminds me a lot of Duran Duran musically, which is probably the main reason why I really like it...

6494. Camel - Rain Dances

Image
From: Rain Dances ; Year: 1977; Genre: Symphonic Rock You know, for a progressive symphonic rock record, the music within can really "earworm" you. I suppose that is a good thing with all of the pretty and intricate music on it. Hard to believe that: 1. there are only three musicians present on this track, and: 2. that the song is just under a radio-friendly three minutes in length; seems longer with all the layered lines playing. It is weird though that they chose Rain Dances as the title-track with it being buried at the end of side 2 as well as it being by far the briefest song on the album.   Hear Rain Dances on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Stone Temple Pilots - Bi-Polar Bear     My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Seal Driver   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Delgados - Primary Alternative   My song pick 4 years ago today: Toto - Make Believe   My song pick 5 years ago today: Badfinger - Take It A...

6493. Lalo Schifrin - Mission: Impossible

Image
From: Music From Mission: Impossible ; Year: 1967; Genre: Jazz Saw Lalo Schifrin's name come across my news feed a couple days ago; of course, as expected, we lost another legendary composer and musician. While I could list the extensive breadth and depth of film scores and seemingly endless recordings from his discography, I thought that I would pick one of his most known and famous compositions. Suffice it to say that the majority of the people of Earth have heard at least one of his pieces of music. Anyway, even without the title, from the first couple of notes you'll instantly be taken mentally into the series and films of the franchise, which have used it regularly. Heck, without this theme music it just wouldn't be Mission: Impossible . To top it all off he had the famous First Call Gang, or Wrecking Crew to play it, so it was bound to be memorable. Rest in Peace Maestro.    Hear the theme from Mission: Impossible on YouTube.         My song pick 1...

6492. Aretha Franklin - Rock Steady

Image
From: Young, Gifted and Black ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk/Soul Was noticing how strange it is that I have chosen only two songs by the late-great Queen of Soul and at the same time I have always been a huge fan of her work. I do not know why I haven't chosen more of her material, but I am intending on rectifying that starting now with this Funky Friday .     Watch her Soul Train performance on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Dokken - Dream Warriors     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Supremes - Come See About Me   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Outfield - Since You've Been Gone   My song pick 4 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Freeways   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)   My song pick 6 years ago today: Yes - Lightning Strikes My song pick 7 years ago today: Queensrÿche - For What It's Worth My song pick 8 years ago tod...

6491. Luther - Don't Take the Time

Image
From: This Close to You ; Year: 1977; Genre: Soul Personally, Luther Vandross' voice is one that I can lose myself in. It's a combination of growing up with his smooth and emotive voice and the sheer fact that he was such an amazing talent with wot God gave him. I just keep finding myself coming back to his two records with his original band; for the life of me I cannot understand why they did not sell initially.   Hear Don't Take the Time on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Melvins - Psycho-Delic Haze     My song pick 2 years ago today: Rammstein - Ohne Dich   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bobby Freeman - C'mon and Swim (Parts 1 + 2)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Martha and the Vandellas - Heat Wave   My song pick 5 years ago today: Funkadelic - Standing on the Verge of Getting It On   My song pick 6 years ago today: Carmen - Conclusion (She Changed) My song pick 7 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Bare Tree...

6490. Waylander - Of Fear and Fury

Image
From: Kindred Spirits ; Year: 2012; Genre: Celtic Folk Metal Had some music from this album come on whilst driving around the other day. I clearly remember when this record came out back in 2012; quickly became my favourite from the band.     Hear Of Fear and Fury on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Trammps - Zing! 6489. Yes - Sweet Dreams

Image
From: Time and a Word ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock Haven't really listened to or chosen one from Yes in a while, do not know why, but just not felt like it. So, I thought I would drop the needle down on one of their earlier records and choose one. Sweet Dreams closes out side one and does so quite well following up after all the energy released in the earlier tracks.    Hear Sweet Dreams  on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Bay City Rollers - Rock n' Roll Love Letter     My song pick 2 years ago today: Stevie Wonder - I Just Called To Say I Love You   My song pick 3 years ago today: Anita Ward - Ring My Bell   My song pick 4 years ago today: Tears for Fears - Elemental   My song pick 5 years ago today: ABBA - On And On And On   My song pick 6 years ago today: Rainbow - Stargazer My song pick 7 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy My song pick 8 years ago today: The Winery Dogs - ...

6488. Zones - New Life

Image
From: That Summer! (Soundtrack); Year: 1979; Genre: New Wave Haven't listened to the Zones in a while, so I am and choosing one of their songs as well. Whilst the band only lasted for a brief period and featured a single studio album, member went on to other acts that became even more famous. New Life was their contribution to the soundtrack of the '79 film That Summer! , which featured many other new wave/post punk bands that were big at the time.     Hear New Life on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Johnny Rivers - Seventh Son     My song pick 2 years ago today: Rare Earth - Satisfaction Guaranteed   My song pick 3 years ago today: Meat Loaf - You Took the Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Saturday Night)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Cam Ye O'er Frae France   My song pick 5 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Road To...   My song pick 6 years ago today: Lacy J. 6487. Mac Davis - I Believe In Music

Image
From: I Believe In Music ; Year: 1971; Genre: Rock/Country Whilst growing up I was exposed a great deal to Mac Davis' music, (man, was he a proficient songwriter), both as performer and others playing wot he wrote. In more recent times I've started to rediscover this master songsmith's vast recordings and just how great of a writer he was both musically and lyrically. Anyway, from wot I have read this song's genesis came about while he was attending a party where for some reason they were about to have a seance. They asked him to join and he apparently declined, someone asked him if he believed in such and off the cuff he replied "I believe in music." He was immediately struck by the idea and the creative process just went into overdrive; he grabbed a nearby guitar and did what he did best and created a memorable song. Apparently thereafter he closed out his live shows with this tune, which became one of his signature pieces. With that singalong gospel chorus ...

6486. Heart - Little Queen

Image
From: Little Queen ; Year: 1977; Genre: Hard Rock I always love it when Anne Wilson gets saucy with her powerful, strutting vocals like with this song. This entire album for that matter the band seemingly had a humongous chip on their collective shoulders, and rightly so with how their former record label and overall music media treated them.   Watch the music video on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Rhythm Machine - Freakish Love     My song pick 2 years ago today: War - Don't Let No One Get You Down   My song pick 3 years ago today: Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues   My song pick 4 years ago today: Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Coming Home)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - The Alien Messiah   My song pick 6 years ago today: The Beach Boys - Your Summer Dream My song pick 7 years ago today: Blue Cheer - Rock Me Baby My song pick 8 years ago today: The Byrds - So You Want to be a Rock 'n' Roll Star ...

6485. Cameo - Raw but Tasty

Image
From: Emotional Violence ; Year: 1992; Genre: Funk/New Jack Swing/Hip-Hop Felt again like some early 1990s funky music; kind of "homered out" once again by choosing one from a favourite band. There is just something comforting about the familiar sounds of that time that draw me back every now and then. I just cannot hear that New Jack Swing rhythm and not immediately start to move along to it; which makes listening to it in a car very interesting. At least you can enter your own fun bouncy world whilst stuck in traffic.   Hear Raw but Tasty on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Dave Edmunds and the Stray Cats - The Race Is On     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - Don't Answer Me   My song pick 3 years ago today: John Denver - Four Strong Winds   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - BU2B2   My song pick 5 years ago today: Jigsaw - Keeping My Head Above Water   My song pick 6 years ago today: A...

6484. Ozric Tentacles - Fetch Me the Pongmaster

Image
From: Vitamin Enhanced ; Year: 1993 (1988); Genre: Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Rock Throughout the 1980s, like many bands when trying to make it big, Ozric Tentacles made cassette albums that were available at their shows. However, eventually they transferred their first six albums to compact disc and sold them in the Vitamin Enhanced boxed set. Shortly after cereal brand Kellogg's sued the band over their argument that the cover art looked too similar to their iconic Corn Flakes, so the band was forced to withdraw the boxed set, which in turn made it quite the rare collector's item. Since then, each of the six albums has been released in its own right. Anyway, this one originally came from their '88 release Sliding and Gliding Worlds , and if you like technical ambient sounds and music that is just pure fun, then this one is for you.   Hear Fetch Me the Pongmaster on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The (Young) Rascals - In the Midnight Hour ...

6483. Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do

Image
From: Frampton Comes Alive! ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock I can only think of two other times off the top of my head where a band's "breakout" album was a live one; the other two are Kiss and Cheap Trick. Interestingly enough, for at least myself, I actually have been gravitating toward live releases over the studio counterparts. Mostly this is because in more recent releases they've become "too clever" with all of the toys and tools at their disposal and have really all but sucked out the human element out of the music. Even with live records, of course, they still add a load of all sorts of processing and other gizmos, but most of the time it is way better than wot they did in the studio. Anyway, picking a Frampton tune; this was the closing one from his monster hit album, and I believe, for at least me anyway, was the first time I heard a talk-box used. Others have used it before, since the late 1930s I believe. It is one of those guitar-driven anthems that, ...

6482. Trio of Doom - Para Oriente

Image
From: Trio of Doom ; Year: 1979; Genre: Jazz Fusion Here is one of the four studio recording from the one-off jazz fusion power trio consisting of legends Tony Williams, John McLaughlin, and Jaco Pastorius. Para Oriente is one written by Tony Williams and has two other very brief "takes" on the record.     Hear Para Oriente on YouTube.   Hear Alternate Take 1 on YouTube.   Hear Alternate Take 2 on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Los Lobos - Don't Worry Baby     My song pick 2 years ago today: Lou Rawls - Three O'Clock in the Morning   My song pick 3 years ago today: Funkadelic - First Ya Gotta Shake The Gate   My song pick 4 years ago today: Curved Air - Easy   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Temptations - (I Know) I'm Losing You   My song pick 6 years ago today: Neil Young - Heart of Gold My song pick 7 years ago today: April Wine - 21st Century Schizoid Man My song pick 8 years ago to...

6481. Cybotron - Eureka

Image
From: Implosion ; Year: 1980; Genre: Electronic Rock/Electronica/Progressive Rock Again, with no reason apparent to myself I am picking a piece from another band that has been on my mind. This time it is from the electronic progressive rock band from Downunda: Cybotron. This is the lead-in track off of their final studio album, at least as far as I'm aware. Eureka is just a fun one to sit back and let the sounds swirl all around you.   Hear Eureka on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Uriah Heep - Rocks in the Road     My song pick 2 years ago today: The Blowflys - Funky In The Hole   My song pick 3 years ago today: Kansas - Mysteries and Mayhem   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Out of the Noise   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ultravox - Man of Two Worlds   My song pick 6 years ago today: Steppenwolf - Rock Me My song pick 7 years ago today: ABBA - One of Us My song pick 8 years ago today: Rick Jam...

6480. The Cranberries - Sunday

Image
From: Everybody Else is Doing it, so Why Can't We? ; Year: 1993; Genre: Alternative Rock For some unknown reason, or perhaps for no reason whatsoever I had The Cranberries' music on my mind this morning. So, I thought this apt song off of their first record would be an excellent choice.    Hear Sunday on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Gloryhammer - Vorpal Laserblaster Of Pittenweem     My song pick 2 years ago today: Megadeth - United Abominations   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sly & The Family Stone - I'll Never Fall In Love Again   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Forge of Vulcan   My song pick 5 years ago today: Asia - Ride Easy   My song pick 6 years ago today: Three Dog Night - It's a Jungle Out There My song pick 7 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Last Train My song pick 8 years ago today: Boston - Don't Be Afraid My song pick 9 years ago today: The...

Image
From: Everything is Beautiful ; Year: 1970; Genre: Soft Rock/Pop/Gospel " There is none so blind As he who will not see We must not close our minds We must let our thoughts be free For every hour that passes by You know the world gets a little bit older It's time to realize that people lies In the eyes of the beholder "    Hear Everything is Beautiful on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Lou Rawls - I'm Satisfied     My song pick 2 years ago today: Blondie - Maria   My song pick 3 years ago today: Crash Test Dummies (feat. 6478. Rose Royce - Bad Mother Funker

Image
From: Rainbow Connection IV ; Year: 1979; Genre: Funk It's a great feeling not to marking the death of a music legend and get back to just picking something for the fun of it; at least as far as I'm aware. Anyway, been listening to some Rose Royce lately whilst driving, which always makes the excursion actually bearable. Here is a totally fun tongue-in-cheek track with that amazing beat to put you in a better mood.   Hear Bad Mother Funker on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts     My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Wolf Unchained   My song pick 3 years ago today: Hawkwind - We Like To Be Frightened   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Maggie's Farm   My song pick 5 years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Infinite Space (Conclusion)   My song pick 6 years ago today: Hall & Oates - Out of Touch My song pick 7 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Station...

6477. The Beach Boys - When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)

Image
From The Beach Boys Today! ; Year: 1965; Genre: Rock/Pop Just yesterday I was commemorating the loss of one music legend: Sylvester Stewart (Sly Stone) , and today, sadly, am marking the passing of another legend: Brian Wilson . Strangely enough, both left this Earth at almost the same age of 82; although Brian Wilson's 83rd would be on the 20th of this month. Anyway, while there was a lot of talent and sheer artistry throughout the band, Brian Wilson was the main force as a musician's musician and lead songwriter of the band, especially through their biggest years. If it was not for his tragic mental illness he would probably would've continued on and push popular music even further. There are many of his songs that I really like, this being one of them. It is another one that, if you listen to all that is happening with the interwoven melodies and harmonies it is some of the more complex in arranging and writing while in the wrapping of a brief two-minute length.    Hear ...

6476. Sly and the Family Stone - Dance to the Medley

Image
From: Dance to the Music ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Funk/Psychedelic Soul Been rather sad the last few days since the passing of Sly Stone , who was the main creative force behind this band that will undoubtedly be heard for centuries to come. Whilst his output was sporadic for the last few decades, everything he seemingly worked on either as a leader or sideman was always his best. He will always be known for those songs of positivity, uniting, and unabashed activism for a better society. I can say this about the legend of a man: the music he and his band played always gave me energy even in the darkest times to power through like there is a beautiful sunrise on the horizon.   Hear Dance to the Medley on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Asia - Bury Me In Willow     My song pick 2 years ago today: Cher - Half-Breed   My song pick 3 years ago today: Robert Knight - Everlasting Love   My song pick 4 years ago today: Parlia...
