5899. Stevie Wonder - Maybe Your Baby

Image
From: Talking Book ; Year: 1972; Genre: Funk/Soul/R&B Stevie Wonder's Talking Book has been permeating my brain today; thought a song off of it would make an excellent choice for this Friday. You gotta love that soul blended with straight-up funk led by that signature sound of the Hohner Clavinet that Mr. Wonder perfected.   Hear Maybe Your Baby on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: David Bowie and the Pat Metheny Group - This Is Not America   My song pick 2 years ago today: Corey Hart - Sunglasses At Night   My song pick 3 years ago today: Chicago - Feelin' Stronger Every Day   My song pick 4 years ago today: Lobo - Pee-Ro Juan Valdez Sam Quixote My song pick 5 years ago today: AC/DC - Are You Ready My song pick 6 years ago today: Bootsy's Rubber Band - Jam Fan (Hot) My song pick 7 years ago today: Van Halen - The Dream is Over My song pick 8 years ago today: Soundgarden - Been Away Too Long My song pick 9 years ago today: ...

5898. The Band - The Weight

Image
From: Music from Big Pink ; Year: 1968; Genre: Folk Rock/Country Rock Yesterday I found out that legendary composer/musician Robbie Robertson passed away at 80 years of age. There's a lot to say about his artistic careers: songwriter, guitarist and other instruments with a number of bands, most noted The Band and backing Bob Dylan on a number of records and songs amongst many others as session musician, not to mention his role as producer on a bunch or albums. From the late 70s onward he has written soundtracks from a multitude of film up until this year even, so suffice it to say, even if you don't listen to The Band, Bob Dylan etc, you have definitely heard his music at some point. Anyway, this is one of The Band's biggest hits that seems to float in and out of pop culture regularly; most likely within the first few seconds of it playing it should ring a bell.   Hear The Weight on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Four Tops - Reflections   M...

5897. ZZ Top - Tube Snake Boogie

Image
From: El Loco ; Year: 1981; Genre: Blues Rock The other day I had one of their songs come on while I was driving and was surprised by how it shook the car; it was fun to say the least. This is among my favourite tracks from the band, always has been; the drums and bass really kick some butt on this one and make an amazing platform for Billy Gibbons to show his stuff with those wicked guitar solos. Of course, the bawdy innuendo-laced lyrics are the "cherry on top;" never a dull moment with ZZ Top.   Hear Tube Snake Boogie on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Olivia Newton-John - Physical   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Undisputed Truth - Smiling Faces Sometimes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bad Company - Burnin' Sky   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - Scars My song pick 5 years ago today: Megadeth - The Threat is Real My song pick 6 years ago today: Chicago - Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? 5896. Bob Welch - I'll Dance Alone

Image
From: Eye Contact ; Year: 1983; Genre: New Wave/Rock Felt like hearing some of Bob Welch's solo material this morning; something from his album that marked his early retirement, which lasted about a decade and a half. It is kind of odd, but very interesting to hear him venture so far into the world of synth being that he was such a classic rock mainstay making his mark in other bands with instantly recognizable hits throughout his career. Anyway, I'll Dance Alone is, as stated, more in the direction of new wave, which was a quite popular mainstream form at the time, so mayhap he was trying to reinvent himself or it could be just the direction he felt pulled in at the time. Whatever the case, it's a fun song to have on whilst going about your day.   Hear I'll Dance Alone on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Headstones - S.O.S.   My song pick 2 years ago today: Maxine Nightingale - Right Back Where We Started From   My song pick 3 years ago tod...

5895. Wolfmother - Remove Your Mask

Image
From: Victorious ; Year: 2016; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal There are times for good doom(ish) stoner metal/hard rock, so what if their music is somewhat derivative, if it's great, then it's great; enough said. Anyway, this is a bonus track from their 2016 record, and is good as the songs on the rest of the album in my opinion.   Hear Remove Your Mask on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: UB40 - Dance With The Devil   My song pick 2 years ago today: Van Halen - 5150   My song pick 3 years ago today: Funkadelic - If You Got Funk, You Got Style   My song pick 4 years ago today: Billy Squier - Lonely Is The Night My song pick 5 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Secret Agent My song pick 6 years ago today: The Motels - Suddenly Last Summer My song pick 7 years ago today: Faith No More - Last Cup of Sorrow My song pick 8 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - The Dancer My song pick 9 years ago today: Bread - Down on my Knees My song pick 10 yea...

5894. Supertramp - Don't Leave Me Now

Image
From: ...Famous Last Words... ; Year: 1982; Genre: Progressive Rock I happened to have this record on my mind today and since I have not chosen one of their tracks in a span I thought I would. This album has always been among my top favourites from Supertramp. Anyway, this is the final track on the record and is also the final song to feature Roger Hodgeson as a songwriter, musician and vocals.   Hear Don't Leave Me Now on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: 3rd Secret - Somewhere in Time   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Temptations - Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ultravox - All Stood Still   My song pick 4 years ago today: Nightwish - Sleepwalker My song pick 5 years ago today: Carmen - Tales of Spain My song pick 6 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Dragon Lady My song pick 7 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction My song pick 8 years ago today: The Sword - A...

5893. Jethro Tull - Everything In Our Lives

Image
From: Heavy Horses (40th Anniversary New Shoes Deluxe Edition); Year: 1978; Genre: Progressive Rock Still, this has to be my favourite 'Tull era: the late 1970s. Here is one that did not make it on the original release, but was part of the 40th Anniversary release, which Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree dusted it and the other down and remastered them. It has a very familiar sound to those who have heard the band's music from the time, probably too familiar, which could be a number of reasons it was left on the cutting room floor so to speak. From a fan who is very familiar, you will hear riffs, melodies and other musical idea that would appear in other songs that did get put on an album. Whatever the case, Everything In Our Lives is one that will seem quite inviting and familiar.   Hear Everything In Our Lives on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lakeside - Party Patrol   My song pick 2 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Never Trust   My ...
