Most of Three Dog Night's catalog actually consists of songs written by others. Usually they would make a hit out of the song and would actually bring fame to the author of as well.
Three Dog Night injected their own Rock/Funk sound in this song to make it more their own rather than trying to just copy the song itself, but a lot of the original idea is still there. The bass, as with most Three Dog Night songs, is brought way up in the mix; it really thumps quite prominently in this one.
