1002 The Delegates - Convention '72

1002 The Delegates - Convention '72

A couple of weeks ago Max chose The Jimmy Castor Bunch's Troglodyte (Cave Man) for his Funky Friday. I immediately was thinking about this sketch piece, which sampled that song as well as many other popular artists from the time, however Troglodyte (Cave Man) was sampled the most by far.
This is the work of a Pittsburgh disc jockey named Bob DeCarlo. It took the shape of a fake political convention in where he imitated radio and television news casters asking questions to politicians; they would answer with sampled pieces from popular music at the time.

Here is a recording on YouTube.

My song pick a year ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Goodbye to Romance
My song pick two years ago today: Slade - Run Runaway

  1. This is actually how I first heard "Troglodyte." In 7th grade a buddy of mine had the 45 RPM record of "Convention '72" and we played it a LOT. In fact, we were actually inspired to create our own little fake newscasts with interview segments that used snippets of records we liked at the time.

I must say, doing that with a turntable and a tape deck was an inexact science, to say the least. That would be much easier in this day and age.

I didn't hear the whole of "Troglodyte" - or even know what it was called or who recorded it - until MANY years later. I think Pat played it in my car. The "gotta find a woman" bit started and the light bulb went off - oh, that's where those interview bits came from!

  2. Yeah, it seems as if we have similar experiences with this track as well. My siblings and I also were inspired to make little "newscasts" as well in this fashion; they did not turn out very well, but it was fun.
My dad actually has the Troglodyte (Cave Man) song on a 45 rpm record. After we fell in love with Convention '72 he showed that one to us, we had it memorized as well; boy, that does bring back some memories.
