6220. Geddy Lee - Gone

Image
From: My Favourite Headache ; Year: 2023 (2000); Genre: Rock The overall melancholyness of this song only serves to enhance the down feeling after the death of legend Neil Peart and the subsequent end of Rush.   Hear Gone on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Tommy Roe - Dizzy   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Super Stupid   My song pick 3 years ago today: Brave Belt - Crazy Arms, Crazy Eyes   My song pick 4 years ago today: Queen - Ming's Theme (In the Court of Ming the Merciless)   My song pick 5 years ago today: ABBA - Lay All Your Love On Me   My song pick 6 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Cowboy Song My song pick 7 years ago today: Pallas - Ratracing My song pick 8 years ago today: The Miracles - Love Machine My song pick 9 years ago today: Mary Hopkin - Those Were the Days My song pick 10 years ago today: Azteca - Red Onions My song pick 11 years ago today: Dream Theater - The Looking Glass My son...

6219. Billy Squier - The Stroke

Image
From: Don't Say No ; Year: 1981; Genre: Hard Rock Music from this record has been on my mind for most of the morning, so I think I will pick one from it. I've always liked this track with the big and spacious sound.   Hear The Stroke on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Marcus Miller - Be My Love   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 1983... 6218. Klaatu - Anus of Uranus

Image
From: 3:47 EST ; Year: 1976; Genre: Space Rock Weird that this one was released twice with slightly different titles, but, if I am merely guessing it probably had something to do with the label not liking the use of a the word. The later version from their debut LP is slightly longer and has a much more "high fidelity" sound to it than the single released three years prior. Despite the juvenile, tongue-in-cheek wordplay, the song is quite solid with a great, driving four on the floor rhythm for this spacy tune.   Hear Anus of Uranus on YouTube. Hear the earlier single "Hanus of Uranus" on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rockwell - Obscene Phone Caller   My song pick 2 years ago today: Zebrahead - Playmate of the Year   My song pick 3 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Mideast Vacation   My song pick 4 years ago today: Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy   My song pick 5 years ago today: Dream Theater - Falls Into the Light ...

6217. Praxis - After Shock (The Chaos Never Died)

Image
From: Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) ; Year: 1992; Genre: Funk Metal/Progressive Metal Here's a proper one to bring the drudgery of the workweek to a close. One from Bill Laswell's supergroup of constant change, Praxis, that features basically the who's who of funk, experimental music and everything in between. This is the 16+ minute piece that closes out the record and really pushes the boundaries of music in all the many genres they fuse and partake in.   Hear After Shock (The Chaos Never Died) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Journey - Next   My song pick 2 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Jupiter   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steve Vai - There's Something Dead in Here   My song pick 4 years ago today: Helloween - Future World   My song pick 5 years ago today: Billy Ocean - Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down)   My song pick 6 years ago today: Ultravox - Lament My song pick 7 years ago today: Hawkwind - Para...

6216. Brenton Wood - Best Thing I Ever Had

Image
From: Oogum Boogum ; Year: 1967; Genre: R&B/Soul I had this record playing in my mind again, so I played it in actuality; not like there's ever a bad time to play this artist's amazing work, right? It just fits, and I love the mellow, soulfulness of his voice with that great Latin beat and crisp guitar.     Hear Best Thing I Ever Had on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Edgar Winter's White Trash - Keep Playin' That Rock 'n' Roll   My song pick 2 years ago today: Explorers Club - Impact 1 – Fate Speaks   My song pick 3 years ago today: Frank Zappa - No Not Now   My song pick 4 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Our Wasted Days   My song pick 5 years ago today: Soundgarden - Room a Thousand Years Wide   My song pick 6 years ago today: Morrissey - First of the Gang to Die My song pick 7 years ago today: Raspberries - I Wanna Be With You My song pick 8 years ago today: Bud Tutmarc - End of the Trail My song pick 9 y...

6215. Luther Davis Group - You

Image
From: Keep On Dancin'/You (Single) ; Year: 1977; Genre: Soul I really, really wish that Luther Davis Jr. and his band would have released more; unless I discover more this will be my final pick from the Luther Davis Group. As far as I am aware they only released two singles, with this being the B-Side of the first, so four songs total. Of course they've appeared on a couple compilation album, which is how I discovered the singles/b-sides, but those were the a-sides. Anyway, this one is a bit less funky and more of a tender, soulful love song that reminds me very much of the Chilites or the Defonics with the awesome vocal harmonies, but they still command their own sound.   Hear You on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steve Vai - The X-Equilibrium Dance   My song pick 2 years ago today: Willie Nelson & Ray Price - Crazy Arms   My song pick 3 years ago today: Marvin Gaye - What's Going On   My song pick 4 years ago today: Funkadelic -...

6214. Ugly Kid Joe - Dead Friends Play

Image
From: Rad Wings of Destiny ; Year: 2022; Genre: Hard Rock/Metal Revisiting Ugly Kid Joe once again and started listening to their most recent release; I have to say that it is quite neat to hear that fun familiar sound from the guys once more.   Hear Dead Friends Play on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - For a Thousand Mothers   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rare Earth - Smiling Faces Sometimes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rhythm Machine - Thought My Love Was Fine   My song pick 4 years ago today: Devo - Uncontrollable Urge   My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - Nightmare My song pick 6 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Just Trying to Be My song pick 7 years ago today: Pitchshifter - Genius My song pick 8 years ago today: Styx - Born For Adventure My song pick 9 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Heavy Metals My song pick 10 years ago today: Yes - The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun) My song pick 11 years...

6213. Gloryhammer - Legendary Enchanted Jetpack

Image
From: Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex ; Year: 2019; Genre: Power Metal Never seem like there is enough nanoseconds in a day to complete all of your work anymore, but still making time to post a song today. Whilst there's nothing "serious" about it, there is a load of epicness and high-energy metal music to blast you through a Monday.   Hear Legendary Enchanted Jetpack on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Pearl Jam - Animal   My song pick 2 years ago today: Parliament - [You're a Fish & I'm a] Water Sign   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Raspberries - Tonight   My song pick 5 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Quick Change Artist   My song pick 6 years ago today: Spock's Beard - All on a Sunday My song pick 7 years ago today: Van Der Graaf Generator - White Hammer My song pick 8 years ago today: Bernard Wright...

6212. Luther Ingram - (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right

Image
From: If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right ; Year: 1972; Genre: Soul This very heavy and soulful track was on my mind today, and I thought I would choose it. This is another song that has been recorded quite a bit over the years, but Luther Ingram's version is for most the definitive one. Absolutely love the music, arrangements, and the vocals. Whilst the idea of forbidden love and the yearning for someone that you can never really have is part of the human condition, he really made a great, emotionally charged song concerning adultery.    Hear (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Funkadelic - You Hit the Nail on the Head   My song pick 2 years ago today: Boston - Tell Me   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ian Anderson - The Browning of the Green   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Roadways   My song pick 5 years ago today: Helloween - Pumpkins United ...

6211. Anne Murray - Snowbird

Image
From: This Way Is My Way ; Year: 1970; Genre: Pop/Country/Folk Rock Yesterday afternoon I was enjoying some amazing weather outdoors: a sunny day that was warm but not too hot; yes, a perfect early autumn day. Whilst taking it all in I was watching some small birds play in the water while giving my plants a drink and this song just happened to start playing in my head, so I thought it was a great time for it. I have always liked the descending melody and chord progression, plus, the vocals are excellent as well.   Hear Snowbird on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - Homeward Bound   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Moody Blues - Question   My song pick 3 years ago today: Les Paul - Goofus   My song pick 4 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Back on the Borderline   My song pick 5 years ago today: Quasar - Fire in the Sky   My song pick 6 years ago today: Curved Air - Elfin Boy My song pick 7 years ago tod...

6210. Funkadelic - Wars of Armageddon

Image
From: Maggot Brain ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Psychedelic Rock/Soul/Hard Rock As I have probably stated prior: Funkadelic is one of my all-time favourite bands, and Maggot Brain has definitely become my top liked from them. This is the last track on the record and they really let it all out with the loud random statements and weird sound effects, but for me personally I love the fusion of the starkly differing and similar sound and genres. Of course, anything with a guitar solo from the late-great Eddy Hazel is a win in my book.   Hear Wars of Armageddon on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Black 47 - Fanatic Heart   My song pick 2 years ago today: Motörhead - Hellraiser   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - Reflections   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot   My song pick 5 years ago today: Victor Wooten - Keep it Low   My song pick 6 years ago today: Klaatu -...

6309. Blancmange - Don't Tell Me

Image
From: Mange Tout ; Year: 1984; Genre: New Wave/Synthpop Here is another band from the 1980s that in my opinion does not receive the acclaim they deserve. Perhaps they didn't distinguish themselves enough from the other synthpop/new wave acts of the time, but they did make quite a few memorable hit songs; this one included.   Hear Don't Tell Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Huey Lewis & The News - If This Is It   My song pick 2 years ago today: Lenny Kravitz - Rock And Roll Is Dead   My song pick 3 years ago today: Marillion - The Space...   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - Last Man on Earth   My song pick 5 years ago today: Janis Joplin - Kosmic Blues My song pick 6 years ago today: Van Morrison - Wild Nights My song pick 7 years ago today: Van Halen - Best of Both Worlds My song pick 8 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Deep Purple My song pick 9 years ago today: Dire Straits - Expresso Love My song ...

6308. Roman Holliday - Stand By

Image
From: Cookin' on The Roof; Year: 1983; Genre: Rockabilly Roman Holliday is one of the bands from the 1980s that, in my opinion, never seems to get the attention or fame they deserve. This song in particular reminds me a lot of Brian Setzer/The Stray Cats but with horns and a big harmony; I especially love that bass vocalist's note in the chorus.    Hear Stand By on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Destination Unknown   My song pick 2 years ago today: Charlie Ryan - Hot Rod Lincoln   My song pick 3 years ago today: Sweeney Todd - Short Distance, Long Journey   My song pick 4 years ago today: Funkadelic - Foot Soldiers (Star Spangled Funky) My song pick 5 years ago today: Asia - Lying to Yourself     My song pick 6 years ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer My song pick 7 years ago today: Rush - Kid Gloves My song pick 8 years ago today: Blood, Sweat & Tears - Spi...

6307. The Jackson 5 - I'll Be There

Image
From: Third Album ; Year: 1970; Genre: Soul/Motown Most are probably aware, but Tito Jackson passed away a few days ago; he was mostly known as a member of The Jackson 5 who sang, played guitar and keys from its inception until his death. When thinking about which song to pick, this big hit came to mind; simply beautiful music with some great vocals.   Hear I'll Be There on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Undressed to Kill   My song pick 2 years ago today: Accept - Princess of the Dawn   My song pick 3 years ago today: Funkadelic - Shockwaves   My song pick 4 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Average Man My song pick 5 years ago today: Reverend Horton Heat - Psychobilly Freakout My song pick 6 years ago today: Fates Warning - Anarchy Divine My song pick 7 years ago today: Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal My song pick 8 years ago today: Triumph - A Minor Prelude/All The Way My song pick 9 ...

6306. Gentle Giant - Memories of Old Days

Image
From: The Missing Piece ; Year: 1977; Genre: Progressive Rock Here's a real pretty and heavy track off of Gentle Giant's 1977 album. You can tell the band was really at a zenith at this point, or close to it; it is just something to hear with it being quite technical and musical, but really easy to sit back and listen to.   Hear Memories of Old Days on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Winery Dogs - Lorelei   My song pick 2 years ago today: Primus - Conspiranoia   My song pick 3 years ago today: Depeche Mode - New Life My song pick 4 years ago today: Yes - Time and a Word My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Commercial Traveler My song pick 6 years ago today: Jefferson Starship - No Way Out My song pick 7 years ago today: Cybotron - Parameters of Consciousness My song pick 8 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - You Better Be Good (Or the Devil Gon' Getcha) My song pick 9 years ago today: Yes - No Opportuni...

6305. Hawkwind - The Iron Dream

Image
From: Quark, Strangeness and Charm ; Year: 1977; Genre: Space Rock/Progressive Rock Another record I have been delving into over the last little bit, Quark, Strangeness and Charm is one of my top favourites from Hawkwind and a blast to listen to.   The Iron Dream closes out the album, which is an instrumental just under two minutes long. Loosely based on Gustav Holst's Mars and took its title from the 1972 Norman Spinrad novel of the song's namesake. From wot I understand, this track was used as a crescendo to Uncle Sam's on Mars when played live.   Hear The Iron Dream on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: LaBelle - Lady Marmalade   My song pick 2 years ago today: Foreigner - The Damage Is Done   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blancmange - Waves   My song pick 4 years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - Bedrock Anthem My song pick 5 years ago today: Jerry Reed - Miller's Cave My song pick 6 years ago today: Ozric Ten...

6304. Muse - Will of the People

Image
From: Will of the People ; Year: 2022; Genre: Glam Rock/Hard Rock Here is another rousing song from Muse, which is a band that I have had on my mind for the last handful of days. Gotta love that rock 'n roll/rockabilly vibe in the main riff; it sets off an interesting mix.   Hear Will of the People on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Kenny Loggins - Whenever I Call You "Friend"   My song pick 2 years ago today: R.E.O. Speedwagon - Don't Let Him Go   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - Hand Over Fist   My song pick 4 years ago today: Wild Turkey - Gentle Rain My song pick 5 years ago today: Eddie Money - Walk on Water My song pick 6 years ago today: Dayton Sidewinders - Go Ahead On My song pick 7 years ago today: Victor Wooten - I Saw God My song pick 8 years ago today: Melvins - A History of Bad Men My song pick 9 years ago today: Wild Turkey - Ballad of Chuck Stallion and the Mustangs My song pick 10 years ago to...

6303. Rockwell - T.V. Psychology

Image
From: Captured ; Year: 1985; Genre: R&B/Synthpop/Soul/Funk Here's one that brings back a lot of memories. Just love the way he sings and the music is perfect; may be dated somewhat, but it's a comforting and familiar sound for me. Sad that this record did not have the same impact as its predecessor; I firmly believe that Rockwell is deeply underappreciated.     Hear T.V. Psychology on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jim Stafford - Wildwood Weed   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Cure - The 13th   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - Carnies My song pick 5 years ago today: Bootsy's Rubber Band - Another Point of View My song pick 6 years ago today: America - Watership Down My song pick 7 years ago today: Hawkwind - Angels of Death My song pick 8 year ago today: Yes - America My song pick 9 years ago today: Styx - Miss America My song pick ...

6302. Billy Joel - She's Right On Time

Image
From: The Nylon Curtain ; Year: 1982; Genre: Rock This is without a doubt my favourite song off of Billy Joel's The Nylon Curtain, just so relatable and upbeat I suppose. Of course, the cute music video that went along with it helped with my appreciation with it; he has always been so great at storytelling in song.   Hear She's Right On Time on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Say Leroy (The Creature From The Black Lagoon Is Your Father)   My song pick 2 years ago today: Lynyrd Skynyrd - You Got That Right   My song pick 3 years ago today: Iron Maiden - Running Free   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jon Oliva's Pain - Festival My song pick 5 years ago today: Eddie Money - Baby Hold On My song pick 6 years ago today: Mr. Big - 1992 My song pick 7 years ago today: Fairport Convention - Dirty Linen My song pick 8 years ago today: Rush - Middletown Dreams My song pick 9 years ago today: Guns N' Rose...
