6789. Marlena Shaw - California Soul

From: The Spice of Life; Year: 1969; Genre: Soul/Funk
This track always puts me in a better mood than I was in when I hear it. It is definitely not in a sugary pop track kind of way, a very soulful and uplifting kind of way.
Recently discovered that Marlena Shaw's recording of this track is actually a cover that was recorded a few times prior and since; I always assumed it originated with her, but I was in error. California Soul was originally written by the legendary husband-and-wife writing duo Ashford & Simpson and recorded first by The Messengers. Wotever the case, I still love this rendition/recording; there's just more great versions out there to hear.

Song 14 ( Canned Heat - On the Road Again )

-
Image
For today I really did not have a song picked for today, so while on the road today I heard this song playing on the radio and thought it kind of epitomized today for me. This song is very bluesy and has a driving bass line, the vocals are really what gives it a distinctive sound. Here is the studio version on YouTube. Here is a mimed television performance on YouTube. +

6974. Savatage - Exit Music

-
Image
From: Edge of Thorns ; Year: 1993; Genre: Rock I cannot begin to state just how great Edge of Thorns is; not a single weak or filler track; it will always be one of my favourites from not just Savatage, but any band. This is a neat instrumental piano interlude played by Jon Oliva between a couple of intense tracks, which is perfect in placement.   Hear Exit Music on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Santana - Leave Me Alone     My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Back to the Family     My song pick 3 years ago today: Klaatu - Hope   My song pick 4 years ago today: Midnight Oil - We Resist   My song pick 5 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Borderline   My song pick 6 years ago today: Yes - Mood for a Day My song pick 7 years ago today: The Beatles - Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite   My song pick 8 years ago today: The Who - Athena My song pick 9 years ago today: Waylon Jennings - Do It A...

6972. Brand X - Modern, Noisy and Effective

-
Image
From: Is There Anything About? ; Year: 1982; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Progressive Rock Do not know why, but just started to play this record from the jazz fusion band Brand X and immediately liked it. I guess you could say that they were wot you got if you had a group of highly skilled British musicians/composers try their hand at the jazz fusion that was popular in The States at the time. I have to say, it turns out you really get a great result all around and then some. Is There Anything About? was the leftovers/reworked tracks from their two previous albums following the band's dissolution that would last just over a decade. Whist these songs are not the best that the Brand X put out, they are very listenable as wot they are: dusted down scraps from the cutting room floor. This one was essentially redo of a backing track from their song Soho on the '79 record Product .   Hear Modern, Noisy and Effective on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Parliam...

Theme Picks

-
This list contains links to my theme weeks and other odd themes that I sometimes do. I highly doubt that it is complete; as I remember/rediscover other themes that I have done in the past I will add them to this list. I guess I should've made this list a long time ago, it would've saved a lot of hassle. My Theme Weeks (in chronological order): Canadian artist theme week - A week of songs from Canadian artists. Truck driving song theme week - A week of picks that featured song about or related to truck driving. Music I like that others I know do not like theme week - Kind of self-explanatory. "The Five" workweek theme - One song from each member of a group of Russian composers known as "The Five:" Mily Balakirev, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Modest Mussorgsky, César Cui, and Alexander Borodin. Eric Clapton theme week - A week of songs that feature Eric Clapton. "Moon" song theme week - A week of songs with "Moon" in the ti...

6973. Jim Henson (as Kermit the Frog) - Rainbow Connection

-
Image
From: The Muppet Movie: Original Soundtrack Recording ; Year: 1979; Genre: Folk I don't know why, but I just wanted to pick this overture-esque and historically significant song from The Muppet Movie . Written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher, who also wrote most of the songs for the film, was sung by the legend Jim Henson himself as the staring Muppet Kermit the Frog. Basically the song consists of Jim Henson accompanied by a banjo and strings amongst other sparse instrumentation. Interestingly enough, it reached number 25 on the Billboard Charts for seven weeks and was selected for preservation into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry a few years ago.   Hear Rainbow Connection on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Journey - Feeling That Way     My song pick 2 years ago today: Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson - The Bottle     My song pick 3 years ago today: Journey - Anytime   My song pick 4 years ago...

2959 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 225 - Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied

-
Image
BWV 225 ; Year: 1727; Genre: Baroque Period/classical I made it another year with this pick today. Back in 2007 on this day I started this blog on a social site called MySpace and in '09 I moved it here; it's getting hard to believe that I've been at this for eight years now. Anywho, this is an extremely beautiful motet piece for eight voices, and there's a good chance you've hear the melody to this song; it's quite memorable. Hear BWV 225 performed by Orquesta de La Chapelle Royale; conducted byPhilippe Herreweghe on YouTube. My song pick one year ago today: 2590 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1077 - Canone doppio sopr'il soggetto My song pick two years ago today: 2218 Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 996 - Suite in E-Minor My song pick three years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV. 1051 - Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-Flat My song pick four years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1049 - Brandenburg Concerto No.4 in G major My song...
