6152. The Thermals - An Ear For Baby

I've kept coming back to the somewhat prophetic concept album as of late; this is one of the darker tracks amongst a lot of darkness on it. However, I've always found The Thermals' music quite odd in that if you don't really focus too much on the lyrics they come off as just some really good upbeat songs. Very interesting is that I was first introduced to them and this album through the soundtrack of an NHL 2K video game over 15 years ago and have liked the band since having it play whilst engaged in a hockey fight.

This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style. Also David Crosby and Graham Nash add some backing vocals, also Harvey Brooks on bass and other Jefferson Airplane alumni Grace Slick and David Freiberg as well. Had a couple of other songs in mind for this minor holiday, (that is, if you can call it an actual holiday), but had this one just pop into my head while I was getting ready to pick.
