This is another song that I am adding because it was brought to my attention while on the road; I seem to choose a lot of songs in this manner. I love the way that he blends the solid, upbeat sound with the melancholy lyrics. The keyboard work is really what gives the song its hooks as well as the way it slams into the chorus.

From: Mr. Big Stuff ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Soul Probably should have waited until tomorrow to choose this one for Funky Friday, but I love the genre and this track too much.  This one popped into my mind whilst I actually had another song with a similar riff that caused both to start running concurrently, which happens a lot in my head actually. Anyway, this is one of those songs that doesn't have one "standout" aspect(s) that catches my attention, but rather a Gestalt, if you will. The entire makeup from beat to vocal is just so good it has your complete attention from start to finish, which is the hallmark of the Stax Records hit machine. Both are probably most noted for playing integral parts in James Brown's band and the creation of the funk genre, but both also have an extensive amount of collaborations with many, many artists. 993 ( Steve Vai - Celluloid Heroes ) I only found out about this cover of the classic Kinks track about a year ago. This one was apparently used as a overture to his Elusive Light and Sound, Vol.1 CD, which consists of tracks that he wrote for various films. I absolutely love what he did with this track; he made it his own song whilst keeping the spirit of the original. I guess when you are one of the world's greatest musicians covering a song written by one of the best songwriters, (Ray Davies), you can't go wrong. Here is a studio recording on YouTube.
