5265. Rare Earth - Good Time Sally

Image
From: Willie Remembers ; Year: 1972; Genre: Hard Rock Bringing November to a close with some Rare Earth today. The other day I got to check out this album, which is one I had yet to sample, and this is the lead single from it. From wot I understand the overall record wasn't received well but is a must for fans of the band.   Hear Good Time Sally on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Asia - Anytime   My song pick 2 years ago today: Joe Cocker - Woman to Woman   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Soul System - Xmas Done Got Funky My song pick 4 years ago today: Queen - A Winter's Tale My song pick 5 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Rise of the Chaos Wizards My song pick 6 years ago today: Foghat - Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool) My song pick 7 years ago today: Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Scratch & Sniff My song pick 8 years ago today: Triumph - A World of Fantasy My song pick 9 years ago...

5264. Manfred Mann - Fox on the Run

Image
From: Fox on the Run (single) ; Year: 1968; Genre: Rock I was introduced to this, the original recording of the song yesterday; I'd heard other versions of this one prior. Fox on the Run has that late '60s melodiousness in spades and has a really catchy, singalong chorus that is enjoyable.   Hear Fox on the Run on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Foreigner - Inside Information   My song pick 2 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Tee Nine Chee Bit   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dire Straits - So Far Away My song pick 4 years ago today: Steve Miller Band - Winter Time My song pick 5 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Apocalypse 1992 My song pick 6 years ago today: Dream Theater - A Rite of Passage My song pick 7 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Mountain Men My song pick 8 years ago today: Marcus Miller - Come Together My song pick 9 years ago today: Journey - Don't Stop Believing My song pick 10 years ago today: Black Sabbat...

5263. Arlo Guthrie - Coming Into Los Angeles

Image
From: Running Down the Road ; Year: 1969; Genre: Folk Rock Always, or so it seems that, around this time of year Arlo Guthrie seems to pop up in our minds, which is mostly due to his epic Alice's Restaurant Massacree that gets heavy play for Thanksgiving every year. Anyway, also as luck would have it I had some of his music come on whilst driving the other day and I thought it'd be fitting. I used to hear this song on the radio quite a bit back in the day, but it has been seemingly ignored as of more recent years. This might have to do with heavier handed censors taking it off of playlists since the overall broadcast companies have been merging into just a few entities. You don't hear a lot of the old songs with overt drug references that much anymore unless you look for them, this one probably more so due to the subject matter of trafficking contraband through an airport.   Hear Coming Into Los Angeles on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Who - Su...

5262. Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry, Be Happy

Image
From: Simple Pleasures ; Year: 1988; Genre: Vocal/A Capella/Pop I had this rather catchy tune playing in my head earlier today and decided it would be today's song choice. This kind of novelty song will probably be among the hits of the last century to be known of as long as there is someone to listen to it. Whilst it has become somewhat cliché and suffers quite a bit from overplay, it still is a fun song to listen to even after all of these years and it still puts as smile across my face when I hear it, as it was originally intended.   Hear Don't Worry, Be Happy on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '66 - Scarborough Fair   My song pick 2 years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - Bohemian Polka   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dick Dale - Speardance My song pick 4 years ago today: Savatage - Dead Winter Dead My song pick 5 years ago today: Dee Clark - Raindrops My song pick 6 years ago today: Sly and the Family Sto...

5261. Kool & The Gang - Let the Music Take Your Mind

Image
From: Kool and the Gang ; Year:1969; Genre: Funk/R&B Wow, Thanksgiving is over, the month is almost over, and it's Friday to boot.  I was listening to some music from Kool & The Gang over the last week or so, which got me wanting to choose one of their songs for this Funky Friday . This is one of their earliest hits off of their debut album that has some great funk musicianship to be had, especially that bass and those horns.   Hear Let the Music Take Your Mind on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Eric Clapton - Pilgrim   My song pick 2 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult -  Let Go   My song pick 3 years ago today: Head East - Since You've Been Gone My song pick 4 years ago today: Bill Haley and his Comets - Shake, Rattle and Roll My song pick 5 years ago today: Kansas - Fight Fire With Fire My song pick 6 years ago today: Johnny Cash - Thanksgiving Prayer My song pick 7 years ago today: Joe Satriani - Satch Boogie My...

5260. Scandal featuring Patty Smyth - The Warrior

Image
From: Warrior ; Year: 1984; Genre: Rock/Pop Happy Thanksgiving! (at least here in the U.S. and any others celebrating it). Didn't really have an appropriate song in mind, so I'm choosing one that's been on my mind recently. This one brings back a lot of memories; back when I was younger in the '80s, and even '90s, I heard this one quite a lot. Anywho, yesterday I happened to stumble upon the song after not hearing it for a span and I thought it would make a great addition to my ever-growing list on my blog.   Hear The Warrior on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight My song pick 2 years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - My Own Space   My song pick 3 years ago today: Foreigner - Hot Blooded My song pick 4 years ago today: Jon Hendricks - No More My song pick 5 years ago today: Bootsy's New Rubber Band - Funk Express Card My song pick 6 years ago today: Marmalade - Rainbow My song pick 7 years ago today: Matthe...

5259. Hawkwind - Alcyone

Image
From: Somnia ; Year: 2021; Genre: Progressive Rock/Space Rock New Hawkwind! I had the great fortune of being able to sample the band's most recent album the other day, and this song's name in particular caught my attention. I'm not sure about as to which Alcyone they are referring to. For me though I immediately recognized it as the name of the brightest star in the Pleiades cluster found in the constellation Taurus. Funny enough, you might recognize the Japanese name for the cluster as well, Subaru , from which a major car company derived its name.  Anyway, this song has a mellow acoustic sound to it with added synthesizers for a nice added colour to the track.   Hear Alcyone on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jerry Reed - Gator   My song pick 2 years ago today: Pallas - The Executioner (Bernie Goetz a Gun)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Band of Horses - Dull Times/The Moon My song pick 4 years ago today: Los Bravos - Black is Bl...

5257. Soundgarden - New Damage

Image
From: Badmotorfinger ; Year: 1991; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge This song, and album for that matter, are pure masterpieces in my opinion, but I might be biased because I'm such a big fan of Soundgarden and their music. This is such an amazing song in how it was constructed; from great lyrics, music, beat, rhythm, etc... not to mention the otherworldly vocals by the late-great Chris Cornell and simply mindblowing guitar work from Kim Thayil.   Hear New Damage on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Divine Wind   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Butt to Buttresusitation   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bruce Hornsby - Halcyon Days My song pick 4 years ago today: The Coasters - Smoky Joe's Cafe My song pick 5 years ago today: Quincy Jones - Killer Joe My song pick 6 years ago today: Blues Image - Lazy Day Blues My song pick 7 years ago today: Pendragon - The Pleasure of Hope My song pick 8 years ago toda...

5256. Megadeth - Post American World

Image
From: Dystopia ; Year: 2016; Genre: Thrash Metal Having Megadeth on the brain again today; this is probably my favourite song off of their most recent release and still has that amazing sound the band has been known for since the beginning. I also found out that they're releasing a new record soon, which is going to be totally awesome! Next year looks to be amazing for new music.   Hear Post American World on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: John Mellencamp - Just Another Day   My song pick 2 years ago today: James Gang - Walk Away   My song pick 3 years ago today: Carmen - Looking Outside (My Window) My song pick 4 years ago today: The Guess Who - Cardboard Empire My song pick 5 years ago today: Jigsaw - I've Seen The Film, I've Read The Book My song pick 6 years ago today: Dio - Holy Diver My song pick 7 years ago today: Dazz Band - Joystick My song pick 8 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Iron Man My song pick 9 years ago today:...

5255. Porcupine Tree - What Happens Now?

Image
From: Nil Recurring ; Year: 2007; Genre: Progressive Rock Recently I discovered that next year there will be a brand new Porcupine Tree album released, apparently sometime in June. It got me wanting to choose another song from the band today; this one that closes out their '07 EP Nil Recurring just seemed perfect for the occasion.   Hear What Happens Now? on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Egg - Contrasong   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ian Matthews - Don't Hang Up Your Dancing Shoes   My song pick 3 years ago today: Huey Lewis & The News - Hip To Be Square My song pick 4 years ago today: Rammstein - Wo Bist Du My song pick 5 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Spyroid My song pick 6 years ago today: Joe Tex - I Gotcha My song pick 7 years ago today: Weather Report - Crystal My song pick 8 years ago today: Gerry Rafferty - Night Owl My song pick 9 years ago today: Duke Ellington - It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got Th...

5254. Lakeside - Money

Image
From: Party Patrol ; Year: 1990; Genre: Funk/Electronica/R&B Celebrating another Funky Friday with this early '90s offering from the band Lakeside. I remember hearing a lot of music in this style back then, thus this track has some nostalgia factor for me. From what I understand, one of the genres that this song in particular fits into is " New Jack Swing ," which, if you were around during the mid '80s to mid '90s, will be instantly recognizable.   Hear Money on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Devo - Working in a Coal Mine   My song pick 2 years ago today: Mastodon - Steambreather   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Sweet Dream My song pick 4 years ago today: AC/DC - R.I.P. 5253. Pendragon - Ghosts

Image
From: The Window of Life ; Year: 1993; Genre: Progressive Rock I have to admit that this album's cover was really the main reason I first picked it up; it's rather striking and colourful. It is nice to see how the s econd wave of prog/rock bands have kept on going throughout the years, with Pendragon being one that has more or less stayed steady over the years. Anyway, this is more of a lighter and more intricate song musically that contains a great deal of keyboards/synth among the other array of instruments.   Hear Ghosts on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Buffalo Springfield - Rock and Roll Woman   My song pick 2 years ago today: Hall & Oates - Head Above Water   My song pick 3 years ago today: Vince Guaraldi Trio - Alma-Ville My song pick 4 years ago today: INXS - New Sensation My song pick 5 years ago today: Amii Stewart - Knock on Wood My song pick 6 years ago today: Link Wray - Comanche My song pick 7 years ago today: Foo...

5252. Stone Temple Pilots - Heaven & Hot Rods

Image
From: No. 4 ; Year: 1999; Genre: Alternative Metal/Grunge Heard some music from STP today and I thought it would be a good day to choose another song from the band. I really miss the music of the '90s a lot; it's good to go back and listen to bands such as Stone Temple Pilots in their classic sound like this.     Hear Heaven & Hot Rods on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Vixen - Rev It Up   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jigsaw - Come With Me   My song pick 3 years ago today: Three Dog Night - Nobody My song pick 4 years ago today: Bootsy Collins - Sound Crack My song pick 5 years ago today: Soundgarden - Limo Wreck My song pick 6 years ago today: Jane's Addiction - Jane Says My song pick 7 years ago today: Marillion - Bitter Suite My song pick 8 years ago today: Dream Theater - These Walls My song pick 9 years ago today: Rush - Stick it Out My song pick 10 years ago today: Nirvana - About a Girl My song pick 11 year...

5251. Stanley Clarke - If This Bass Could Only Talk

Image
From: If This Bass Could Only Talk ; Year: 1988; Genre: Jazz Fusion This is a neat little song; it is mostly intricately played melody and rhythm on the bass guitar with what sounds like tap-dancing backing the track, kind of gives it a slight flamenco feel. What I really like the most about it is how Stanley Clarke shows off his mastery of the instrument and still makes it pleasantly listenable.   Hear If This Bass Could Only Talk on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Winery Dogs - Solid Ground   My song pick 2 years ago today: Alestorm - Alestorm   My song pick 3 years ago today: Osiris - War On The Bullshit My song pick 4 years ago today: Triumph - Hard Road My song pick 5 years ago today: AC/DC - Big Guns My song pick 6 years ago today: The Yardbirds - For Your Love My song pick 7 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Thank You For The Feeling My song pick 8 years ago today: Symphonic Theater of Dreams - The Ministry ...

5250. Pearl Jam - Dance of the Clairvoyants

Image
From: Gigaton ; Year: 2020; Genre: Alternative Rock Checking out Pearl Jam's newest album again today and decided to pick another one off of it. Dance of the Clairvoyants is one of the main singles from it and has a bit more of a modern pop sound to it than I'm used to from the band, but it still has a lot of their established style to be had as well.   Hear Dance of the Clairvoyants on YouTube.        My song pick 1 year ago today: Twelfth Night - East of Eden   My song pick 2 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Jungle Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Rolling Stones - Lady Jane My song pick 4 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Tenderloin My song pick 5 years ago today: The Beach Boys - I Can Hear Music My song pick 6 years ago today: Earthless - Equus October My song pick 7 years ago today: Rammstein - Weiner Blut My song pick 8 years ago today: Miles Davis - Funky Tonk My song pick 9 years ago today: Pallas - The Last A...

5249. Steely Dan - Bad Sneakers

Image
From: Katy Lied ; Year: 1975; Genre: Rock/Jazz Fusion I had Steely Dan on my mind ever since hearing them while driving around the other day; this album in particular seemed especially in my brain. This is one of the lead singles off their Katy Lied record, which has a nice, laid-back sound and feel to it.   Hear Bad Sneakers on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Fates Warning - Seven Stars   My song pick 2 years ago today: Grand Funk Railroad - Sin's a Good Man's Brother   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jimi Hendrix Experience - Burning of the Midnight Lamp My song pick 4 years ago today: ABBA - Dance (While the Music Still Goes On) My song pick 5 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Moonlight Serenade My song pick 6 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Old Black Cat My song pick 7 years ago today: Parliament - Dr. Funkenstein My song pick 8 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Rated X My song pick 9 years ago today: Cab Calloway - Learnin...

5248. The Moody Blues - The Spirit

Image
From: The Other Side of Life ; Year: 1986; Genre: Progressive Rock/Synthpop Yesterday I learned of the passing of The Moody Blues' mainstay member, drummer/songwriter/poet Graeme Edge. As I've said before this band was really not only my "gateway" into progressive rock, but I'd have to say my personal like of music in general. Sadly, he's the second main member of the band to die, the first being Ray Thomas, who was probably best-known as the flautist of the band. From wot I understand the band has more of less come to an end; such is the reality of artists that have performed for this long. Anyway, back in the '80s I remember that The Moody Blues were having a bit of a renaissance in their popularity and I heard their new material a lot back then. The Other Side of Life in particular was one that remember well as an album from that period and one that got me interested in the band as well. The Spirit is, as far as I'm aware, the only track of the rec...

5247. War - You Got the Power

Image
From: Outlaw ; Year: 1982; Genre: Funk As luck would have it I was thinking about the band War today whilst thinking about what to pick for this week's Funky Friday . This is one of the lead singles off of their '82 release Outlaw , which is oozing with that 80s style of funk.   Hear You Got the Power on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Nocturnal Rites - New World Messiah   My song pick 2 years ago today: Duran Duran - The Universe Alone   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Human League - Don't You Want Me Baby My song pick 4 years ago today: Marillion - Incommunicado My song pick 5 years ago today: Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah My song pick 6 years ago today: Missing Link - Time Will Change My song pick 7 years ago today: Ian Anderson - The Engineer My song pick 8 years ago today: The Royal Philharmonic - Limelight My song pick 9 years ago today: George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue My song pick 10 years ago today: Rammstein - Mein...

5246. R.E.O. Speedwagon - Time For Me to Fly

Image
From: You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish ; Year: 1978; Genre: Rock For almost a week now I was meaning to pick a song from R.E.O. Speedwagon, but another band/song just kept getting in my way. This is actually quite a fun song to play and sing, especially in certain situations. I remember a band I was in once we had a gig at a wedding, and we thought it was best to take it off the setlist on that occasion, but it would've been hilarious in my opinion.   Hear Time For Me to Fly on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Hammerfall - And Yet I Smile   My song pick 2 years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Only Way (Hymn)   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Tubes - She's a Beauty My song pick 4 years ago today: Metallica - One My song pick 5 years ago today: Fatback - Gotta Get My Hands On Some (Money) My song pick 6 years ago today: Forest - Autumn Childhood My song pick 7 years ago today: Alestorm - 1741 (The Battle of ...

5245. Jethro Tull - Shoshana Sleeping

Image
From: The Zealot Gene ; Year: 2022; Genre: Progressive Rock Just yesterday I learned of this album's soon-to-be existence; it will actually be the first official new Jethro Tull album released since 2003. Sure, Ian Anderson has released two records in the meantime, but it's kind of nice to see the 'Tull name on a new released again. Anyway, this is the first single to be put out and it's neat to get a "taste" of the new material a couple of months early. To say the least it sounds very much as wot you would expect and Ian's voice has seemed to get stronger to my ears.   Hear Shoshana Sleeping on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rammstein - Deutschland   My song pick 2 years ago today: Boston - Sail Away   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Coasters - Searchin' My song pick 4 years ago today: Wooten, Chambers, Franceschini - Funky D My song pick 5 years ago today: Elton John - Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding My song pick 6...

5244. Hot Butter - Slag Solution

Image
From: More Hot Butter ; Year: 1973; Genre: Electronic Rock/Synthpop After hearing one of their songs while driving about yesterday I thought I should pick yet another one from this rather unique act. The well-defined melody played on the Moog synthesizer makes it a quite a catchy tune.   Hear Slag Solution on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Midnight Oil - Shakers and Movers   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Urban Apocalypse   My song pick 3 years ago today: Al Green - Guilty My song pick 4 years ago today: Genesis - No Son of Mine My song pick 5 years ago today: Elton John - Saturday's Alright for Fighting My song pick 6 years ago today: Laura Branigan - Gloria My song pick 7 years ago today: The Zombies - Care of Cell 44 My song pick 8 years ago today: Band of Horses - The Great Salt Lake My song pick 9 years ago today: Stahlhammer - Eisenherz My song pick 10 years ago today: Exist†Trace - RESONANCE My song pi...

5243. UB40 - (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You

Image
From: Promises and Lies ; Year: 1993; Genre: Reggae/Pop A couple of days ago original band member Astro (Terrance Wilson) sadly passed away. I've always had a soft spot for UB40 and thought I would go ahead and choose one of their more famous songs for my blog today. I really like what they did with this song, which of course was originally recorded by the late-great Elvis Presley, in how the fused a bit of pop in with their signature brand of reggae.   Hear (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rush - High Water   My song pick 2 years ago today: Amnesty - Can I Help You?   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bad Company - Shake It Up My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - Turn the Page My song pick 5 years ago today: The Nice - Azrial (Angel of Death) My song pick 6 years ago today: U2 featuring B.B.
