1136 Nirvana - Drain You

1136 Nirvana - Drain You

After all the drama associated with my blog the last week I am wanting to step away from all the heaviness. After all, this is a song-a-day blog, not blog to rant about the record industry; although, it has been nice to engage in a discussion about it.
Through all of this I have had quite a few conversations, not really about the recording industry itself, but the music being created. Since we seem to cut musical eras into 10-year blocks divided by decades, it is interesting to pose the question: what music defines a decade?
What I have been wondering is in 10-20 years what bands and songs will be looked at as the defining songs of the last decade? What songs recorded from 2000-2009 will still be listened to in 20 years? In 10-20 years when a film or television show is made set in the 00's, what music will be playing in the background? Probably a lot of it will consist of Metal and Hip-Hop with a smattering of the Pop/American Idol scene. For me personally, other than a few songs in the Metal, Hip-Hop, and Indie Rock genres, I have trouble naming anything from the last decade that will still be listened to in 20 years the same way much of the music from 20 years ago is still listened to today.
When one thinks of the mainstream music of the '90s one of the first few bands named will always be Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, etc. There are too many to list here and that is just sticking with the mainstream, not delving into other genres. It's the same with every other decade since the invention of recorded music: too many excellent bands and songs to list.
I am not saying that there is nothing good today, but it seems that there is lower quantities of the good music. I have to agree with Max on this one: with services like YouTube it has made it a lot easier to discern between what is quality and what is not before making a purchase.
Anyway, my song pick today, of course, comes from one of the bands from '90s that to some helped to define the decade musically. I still remember back then it seemed as if you couldn't turn on a radio without hearing them.

Hear Drain You on YouTube.
