5327. Audioslave - Until We Fall

Image
From: Revelations ; Year: 2006; Genre: Alternative Rock Listening to Audioslave's last album, Revelations , again today; I wanted to pick a track from it as well. It's kind of sad how this supergroup didn't continue on; the members of the two storied and legendary bands: (Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden) really jelled quite well together and made a sound that was rather unique across the entire spectrum. I cannot say that this song is my favourite off the album mostly due to the fact that all the tracks on it are simply amazing, but this one stands out in my opinion.   Hear Until We Fall on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Gloryhammer - Power of the Laser Dragon Fire   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Cold Dead Reckoning (2044)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Good Rockin' My song pick 4 years ago today: Carmen - Bullfight My song pick 5 years ago today: The Outfield - Say It Isn't So My so...

5326. Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

Image
From: It Must Have Been Love (single) ; Year: 1987/1990; Genre: Soft Rock I am kind of surprised, at this point in my blog, that have not chosen more songs from the Swedish group Roxette than I have; they are a great act with amazingly written, performed, and produced material along with a lot memories for me from the time the music came out, so I should have picked more. Anyway, this song in particular is one of their biggest hits here in the U.S. and has been used in a few movie soundtracks as well. One thing I did not realize is that it was recorded earlier as a Christmas song in '87, which admittedly I have never heard.   Hear It Must Have Been Love on YouTube. Hear the original version of It Must Have Been Love (Christmas for the Broken Hearted) on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dream Theater - The Best of Times   My song pick 2 years ago today: Seals & Crofts - We May Never Pass This Way (Again)   My song pick 3 years ago today: ...

5325. Robin Trower - Bluebird

Image
From: In City Dreams ; Year: 1977; Genre: Progressive Rock Been hearing a bit of Robin Trower lately and decided that I should pick another song from his band. I've never really listened to this record prior and was amused by the cover artwork, so I finally started to listen to it and immediately wished I had a lot sooner. Bluebird caught my attention just a few seconds in; I really enjoyed the crisp sound of the guitar and other instruments, which made a very beautiful track to listen to.   Hear Bluebird on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Pleasure - Glide   My song pick 2 years ago today: Wings - Venus and Mars   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pearl Jam - I Got Id My song pick 4 years ago today: Crash Test Dummies - In the Days of the Cavemen My song pick 5 years ago today: Muse - City of Delusion My song pick 6 years ago today: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away My song pick 7 years ago today: Barenaked Ladies - If I Had $10000...

5324. George Clinton - Do Fries Go With That Shake?

Image
From: R&B Skeletons In The Closet ; Year: 1986; Genre: Funk/Dance After being off in "left field" so to speak with the different Funky Friday picks lately I decided I would choose one from one of the Godfathers of the funk this time. As with most of George Clinton's material, this one is very fun to listen to with all of the 1980s electronic funk to be had.    Hear Do Fries Go With That Shake? on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jefferson Starship - Alien   My song pick 2 years ago today: Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get It Right   My song pick 3 years ago today: Ten Years After - Over the Hill My song pick 4 years ago today: The Who - Sister Disco My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - Shock Treatment My song pick 6 years ago today: Marillion - Hooks in You My song pick 7 years ago today: Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity My song pick 8 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Breaking the Silence My song pick 9 years ago today: A...

5323. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Three Steps

Image
From: Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd ; Year: 1973; Genre: Southern Rock/Hard Rock Was listening to this song yesterday and was surprised that I had not chosen it yet, so I will remedy that today. Other than the story told throughout the track my favourite aspect from it is that really interesting and thumping bass line performed by apparently Ed King, who played the bass guitar on their first album; on subsequent records he was involved with the band.   Hear Gimme Three Steps on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Soundgarden - Superunknown   My song pick 2 years ago today: Tesla - Afterlife   My song pick 3 years ago today: Tom Rapp - Stardancer My song pick 4 years ago today: The Police - Mother My song pick 5 years ago today: Luther - Don't Wanna Be a Fool My song pick 6 years ago today: Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues My song pick 7 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Doggerland My song pick 8 years ago today: Carmen - Buleri...

5322. The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - Do Your Thing

Image
From: Together ; Year: 1968; Genre: Funk/Soul After hearing some of their music yesterday I really felt like picking something from Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. Do Your Thing is apparently one of the band's earlier singles and has a lot of very interesting and amazing sounds throughout this rather funky soulful piece.   Hear the long version of Do Your Thing on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Steve Miller Band - Fandango   My song pick 2 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Born on the Bayou   My song pick 3 years ago today: April Wine - Caught in the Crossfire My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Ears of Tin My song pick 5 years ago today: Melvins - With Teeth My song pick 6 years ago today: Queen - Fat Bottomed Girls My song pick 7 years ago today: Styx - Do Things My Way My song pick 8 years ago today: Steeleye Span - The Black Freighter My song pick 9 years ago tod...

5321. The Ventures - Journey to the Stars

Image
From: The Fabulous Ventures ; Year: 1964; Genre: Surf Rock It's another day in which I had no song or artist in mind for today's song choice, but for some reason I eventually got the classic surf rock group The Ventures on my mind and went from there. This is one that has a nice, hard edge to it in that classic instrumental surf sound.   Hear Journey to the Stars on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Missing Link - Sorcery   My song pick 2 years ago today: Boston - Party   My song pick 3 years ago today: Azteca - Non Pacem My song pick 4 years ago today: The Zombies - Beechwood Park My song pick 5 years ago today: Three Dog Night - The Loner My song pick 6 years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Babies My song pick 7 years ago today: Live - Lightning Crashes My song pick 8 years ago today: Duran Duran - The Reflex My song pick 9 years ago today: Savatage - The Storm My song pick 10 years ago today: John Dowland - In Darkness We Dw...

5320. Amon Amarth - Raven's Flight

Image
From: Berserker ; Year: 2019; Genre: Death Metal Heard Amon Amarth yet again today and thought since I had not chosen one of their songs in quite some time that I would revisit them and get a listen to wot they've been up to more recently. This is one of the lead singles from their most recent record and has some excellent music throughout.   Hear Raven's Flight on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Duran Duran - Come Undone   My song pick 2 years ago today: George Clinton - Computer Games   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Shadow Warrior My song pick 4 years ago today: Hugh Masekela - Grazing in the Grass My song pick 5 years ago today: Scorpions - Send Me an Angel My song pick 6 years ago today: R.E.O. 5319. Blue Öyster Cult - Florida Man

Image
From: The Symbol Remains ; Year: 2020; Genre: Hard Rock Some excellent classic sounding music on this one from BÖC's most recent album. From listening to the lyrics and other sources I discovered this song was inspired by the popular meme of "the man from Florida" heard in viral news stories and such.   Hear Florida Man on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Moody Blues - Voices in the Sky   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Kinks - Lola   My song pick 3 years ago today: Fleet Foxes - Grown Ocean My song pick 4 years ago today: Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady) My song pick 5 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Only Solitaire My song pick 6 years ago today: Modest Petrovitch Mussorgsky - Intermezzo Symphonique in Modo Classico My song pick 7 years ago today: The Soul Seven - The Cissy's Thang My song pick 8 years ago today: Soundgarden - Fell on Dark Days My song pick 9 years ago today: Rush - Driven My song pick 10 ye...

5318. Meat Loaf - I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)

Image
From: Welcome to the Neighborhood ; Year: 1995; Genre: Hard Rock It's been quite a sad last couple of days after artist/performer extraordinaire Meat Loaf passed away; less that a year since the passing of his long-time collaborator Jim Steinman; I cannot believe that he was 74, I thought he was younger for some reason. He was one I listened to a fair bit back in my teens; I did not really know about him or heard his music prior to the early 1990s as he really was not on the radio and my parents were not into his music at the time, or so it would seem. I started to really get into his music about the time that my siblings and myself were discovering and buying our own personal music collections. For that decade it seemed Meat Loaf was everywhere and then I kind of lost track of him, but always have had a definite fondness for what I knew of his work, both musically and acting wise. Anyway, I knew I had to choose one of his songs today, and this is definitely one I remember quite w...

5317. Yellow No 5 - Everything Cherries

Image
From: Moonwalk ; Year: 1991; Genre: Funk/Rap/Soul To be honest, I do not know much about this one-album band supposedly from the early 1990s it seems, but they have a pretty good sound as far as what I've heard. I kind of happened upon them whilst searching the internet and am not totally sure about the fact pertaining to the band, so I'm kind of depending on the meager amount of information I could find.   Hear Everything Cherries on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Pallas - Blood and Roses   My song pick 2 years ago today: Faith No More - Zombie Eaters   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby My song pick 4 years ago today: The Who - The Song Is Over My song pick 5 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Questlords of Inverness, Ride to the Galactic Fortress! 5316. Ram Jam - Black Betty

Image
From: Ram Jam ; Year: 1977; Genre: Hard Rock/Blues Rock Had this song on my mind yesterday for some reason and I thought I'd make it today's pick. Black Betty is Ram Jam's main claim to fame with this being their biggest hit song, which is a hard blues rock rendition of the classic originally written by legendary bluesman Lead Belly .   Hear Black Betty on You Tube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jigsaw - Wildfire   My song pick 2 years ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)   My song pick 3 years ago today: IQ - Awake and Nervous My song pick 4 years ago today: Nirvana - Polly My song pick 5 years ago today: Maktub - Lies My song pick 6 years ago today: Al Stewart - Year of the Cat My song pick 7 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Dreamworld My song pick 8 years ago today: Primus - John the Fisherman My song pick 9 years ago today: Pearl Jam - Go My song pick 10 years ago today: The Ventures - Beethoven's Sonat...

5315. Uriah Heep - Hold Your Head Up

Image
From: Raging Silence ; Year: 1989; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock This song is, of course, a cover of the epic originally performed by the band Argent. As I've said prior, the best cover versions, in my opinion, make the song their own whilst still paying some homage to the original; this one does both in spades. I really like the added guitar solos throughout amongst other features of this version.   Hear Hold Your Head Up on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Alice in Chains - Rain When I Die   My song pick 2 years ago today: Return to Forever - Spain   My song pick 3 years ago today: Asia - The Last to Know My song pick 4 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Childhood's End My song pick 5 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Take Hold of the Flame My song pick 6 years ago today: Glenn Frey - Smuggler's Blues My song pick 7 years ago today: Weather Report - Predator My song pick 8 years ago today: Joni Mitchell - Hejira My song pick 9 year...

5314. Bon Jovi - All I Want Is Everything

Image
From: These Days ; Year: 1995; Genre: Hard Rock Over the last couple of days, ever since I started subscribing to Apple Music in specific, Bon Jovi has been getting a lot of play out of my library for some reason. Since this happening I thought I'd oblige and pick another one from the band, which I have not done for quite a while now. This is one of the later tracks from what has basically become my favourite Bon Jovi album: 1995's These Days . It's kind of a fun track in actuality and is a bit more upbeat than its brethren on the record.   Hear All I Want Is Everything on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Megadeth - Death From Within   My song pick 2 years ago today: Steven Wilson - Perfect Life   My song pick 3 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - This Ain't the Summer of Love My song pick 4 years ago today: Dick Dale - Shredded Heat My song pick 5 years ago today: The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society My song pick 6 years a...

5313. Billy Joel - Leningrad

Image
From: Storm Front ; Year: 1989; Genre: Rock This is one of the heaviest songs Billy Joel has ever written subject-matter/lyric wise in my opinion. Kind of capturing the mood and events at the time with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the ending of the Soviet Union and such, this is a biographical story about a friend of his, Victor Razinov, who grew up under unideal circumstances during and after World War II in Soviet Russia. He also mixes in his own autobiographical story concerning growing up on the other side in the Cold War United States. For people of their generation up through mine it should send a shiver up your spine remembering how things used to be and how people on both sides were taught to fear the other and see them as the enemy and nothing more and how some of us actually came to the understanding that people on both sides weren't the villainous group that that we all believed.   Hear Leningrad on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Hot Bu...

5312. Jethro Tull - The Zealot Gene

Image
From: The Zealot Gene ; Year: 2022; Genre: Progressive Rock Jethro Tull the other day released this single and title-track from the upcoming The Zealot Gene album, which is supposed to be released on the 28th of this month, and I am very much looking forward to it. Thus far, the music reminds me mostly of their J-Tull Dot Com and Roots to Branches albums that were released in 1999 and 1995 respectively and were the last two official 'Tull records consisting of new material. Whilst I have been hoping that they would continue in the vein of the last two Ian Anderson solo albums, which had more of a throwback to the late '70s sound of the band, I still like wot I've been hearing from the three singles that have already come out. It's very much what you'd expect from the pen of Ian Anderson and his collaboration with the current band's roster; the hard and heavy prog rock sound along with his heavy and relevant lyrics.   Hear The Zealot Gene on YouTube.       M...

5311. Golden Earring - Long Blond Animal

Image
From: Prisoner of the Night ; Year: 1980; Genre: Hard Rock Happened to be thinking about Golden Earring today when I sat down to make the day's song pick, and thus am picking yet another one. Most here is the U.S. probably only know the band for two hit songs, or perhaps if you're a casual fan you know of a few other singles that made their way to the American airwaves over the years. This one is one of the songs that did crack the market over here, but was a lot bigger in Europe and specifically their native Netherlands as well as Australia.   Hear Long Blond Animal on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Lakeside - Strung Out   My song pick 2 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Long-a-Growing   My song pick 3 years ago today: Neil Young - Old Man My song pick 4 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Ma-Ma-Ma Belle My song pick 5 years ago today: Bon Jovi - Hey God My song pick 6 years ago today: Parliament - Let's Play Hous...

5310. Boyz II Men - Motownphilly

Image
From: Cooleyhighharmony ; Year: 1991; Genre: Soul/Funk/New Jack Swing Dang, this is definitely a blast from the past for me in particular; it has a distinct connection to the time it was released, but has aged quite well nevertheless. That was one thing I remember about Boyz II Men is how in their music you could hear so many different influences and musical schools of thought throughout all of their music. Motownphilly is another one of those tracks to utilize that new jack swing style that was everywhere back then, but this one is definitely an iconic song amongst the many of the genre; heck, even to this day this song will pop into my head from out of nowhere.   Hear Motownphilly on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Yes - Then   My song pick 2 years ago today: Brave Belt - Goodbye, Soul Shy   My song pick 3 years ago today: Klaatu - Little Neutrino My song pick 4 years ago today: Pallas - Win or Lose My song pick 5 years ago today: AC/D...

5309. The Ronettes - I Can Hear Music

Image
From: I Can Hear Music/When I Saw You (single) ; Year: 1966; Genre: Rock/Pop Yesterday I found out, sadly, that music legend Ronnie Spector had passed away after a battle with cancer. I remember hearing a lot of her and the band's music over the years, and I absolutely loved the vocals, production and musical arrangement of many of their songs; this one probably being my favourite among them.   Hear I Can Hear Music on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Wasted Words   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - The Main Monkey Business   My song pick 3 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - For Your Love My song pick 4 years ago today: The Offspring - A Million Miles Away My song pick 5 years ago today: Imagination - Flashback My song pick 6 years ago today: Blue Cheer - Just a Little Bit My song pick 7 years ago today: Soundgarden - Outshined My song pick 8 years ago today: The Kinks - All Day and All of the N...

5308. Alice Cooper - Wish You Were Here

Image
From: Alice Cooper Goes To Hell ; Year: 1976; Genre: Hard Rock Just felt like listening to this record again today and am choosing one of my more liked songs off of it. Wish You Were Here , like much of Alice Cooper's music there is a noted timeless quality to it, except maybe for the dated '70s guitar "window washer" effect.   Hear Wish You Were Here on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Return to Forever - The Musician   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - Superconductor   My song pick 3 years ago today: Eddie Money - Two Tickets to Paradise My song pick 4 years ago today: Wilson Pickett - Soul Dance Number Three My song pick 5 years ago today: Weather Report - Blackthorn Rose My song pick 6 years ago today: Tears for Fears - Shout My song pick 7 years ago today: Badfinger - Baby Blue My song pick 8 years ago today: Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings My song pick 9 years ago today: Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms ...

5307. The Nightwatchman - It Begins Tonight

Image
From: World Wide Rebel Songs ; Year: 2011; Genre: Hard Rock/Alternative Rock Was going through some of Tom Morello's lately and came back once again to his side project: The Nightwatchman. It Begins Tonight is for me one of the absolute highlights from the record, it has a good "bluesyness" to the hard rock edge of the song.   Hear It Begins Tonight on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Foghat - Drivin' Wheel   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush (Neil Peart) - Der Trommler (Drum Solo)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Billy Joe Royal - Cherry Hill Park My song pick 4 years ago today: Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses My song pick 5 years ago today: Al Di Meola - Black Cat Shuffle My song pick 6 years ago today: David Bowie - Starman My song pick 7 years ago today: King Crimson - Starless My song pick 8 years ago today: Black 47 - Maria's Wedding My song pick 9 years ago today: Van Halen - 1984 My song pick 10 years ago today: Savatag...

5306. Elton John - The Fox

Image
From: The Fox ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rock I absolutely forgot which song I had in mind today, so, since I've been discussing his music with some people recently and thus have had it on my mind, I figured I couldn't go wrong with picking one from Elton John. I really like the different approaches used in The Fox ; there are aspects of gospel, country, and blues throughout this one, which gives it a very warm and inviting feeling. I also love Bernie Taupin's excellently penned and descriptive lyrics and Elton John's delivery of them; they really make the song what it is.   Hear The Fox on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Miles Davis - Blue Haze   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bootsy Collins - Hyper Space   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Cure - Lovesong My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - The Lofty Tall Ship/Shallow Brown My song pick 5 years ago today: Powerwolf - Sanctus Dominus My song pick 6 years ago today: Simple Min...
