I have been returning to this profound record a lot as of late; just need the non-jaded outlook toward wot is great about the world and that it's still worth saving from the late-great John Denver. Poems, Prayers & Promises is probably if not the most, right up there with his albums where his outlook had not been yet sullied and his spirit not yet battered by the same world he so wished to save.
I decided to go with a double pick today with the two tracks that close it out; the first being a cover of one of James Taylor's signature songs: Fire and Rain, and the second being a poem originally written and performed by Kendrew Lascelles. From: In a Sentimental Mood ; Year: 1989; Genre: Swing/Big Band Jazz Had this song on my mind since yesterday; quite a catchy and upbeat track to say the least. This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style.
