6738. The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - A Little Class & A Little Trash

Kinda strange, but while I absolutely love their music, I never really looked into the specifics of the band. I discovered, to my amazement, that this band has gone through a few name changes and thus, makes "connecting the dots" so to speak, a little more challenging. Charles Wright was originally in a number of Doo-Wop groups early on, but this band apparently started out as "Charles Wright and the Wright Sounds," which began in 1962; around '66 and '67 they seemingly went by the name "The Soul Runners." At some point in '67 to '68 they became this incarnation that recorded today's pick and album and by 1970 became the most successful incarnation that was the verbose "Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band." They would have a few big hits with Express Yourself being the highest charting. After about 1971 more or less the band was no more and Charles Wright went on with a solo career, which I do believe he is still doing his thing strong as ever today. The rest of the band went on to other really famous acts like Earth, Wind & Fire and Bill Withers.
Okay, now that that is settled, on to my song choice for today: A Little Class & A Little Trash. This one is an awesome groove in the soulful style that takes cues from everything Soul/R&B/Funk/Psychedelia of the time and blends it amazingly well whilst adding their own unique sound. Really, they had a very different sound and feel to that groove. Suffice it to say, you'll be at least tapping your foot, bobbing your head, or somehow become connected to that cool groove. This one has become one of my favourite from this great band.
