1901 Gustav Mahler - Symphony No.4

There have been quite a few classical composers that I have yet to add to my blog; Gustav Mahler is definitely one of them. So, when I noticed that this, his fourth symphony premiered in 1901, which is also today's song pick number, I figured it would be an excellent choice.

Here is a complete performance of Mahler's 4th Symphony by the World Orchestra of Peace, conducted by Valery Gergiev on YouTube. Circa 2011, which marked the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler's death.

From: Martika ; Year: 1988; Genre: Pop Since the other day I've had this track on my mind, which is another that I have not heard in decades. It's weird how certain songs will play almost like you are actually listening to them; this is one of them. Could still remember the chord progression, words and the instruments' sounds. Anyway, back in the late 1980s, (basically when I was a pre-teen/young teenager), I remember hearing this one a lot as well as a handful of other songs from Martika. If I remember correctly she was kind of already a household name prior to her recording debut with her acting career on a few films and television shows. Apparently Martika drew weary of life in the spotlight and the music industry in particular; she walked away after a few years and then reemerged about a decade later. She formed the band Oppera with her husband. They seem to have made two studio album and she has done some more solo recording.   Hear Toy Soldiers on YouTube.     ...

I knew Pete Townshend wrote and sung on this track, always thought there was a recording of it on a Who album too, but I guess I was in error. From: The Best of Blue Mink ; Year: 1974; Genre: Funk I just love finding bands that are new to me. I learned of Blue Mink through the works of bass great Herbie Flowers, who is among my favourite masters of the musical instrument. I wanted to pick this funky number, which was a single from just prior to the band calling it quits. Kind of neat how, even with them being a successful band, they continued with their side work of being session musicians during Blue Mink's run. Musically The Needle Lies is a fast-paced and hard hitting metal track that really compliments the point in the tale where Nikki confronts the nefarious Dr. X and tells him that he and Mary are leaving. 1318 Queensrÿche - Fear City Slide From: Operation: Mind Crime II, Year: 2006 I've been heavily enjoying Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime II album lately; this is one of many tracks that I absolutely love off of the album. This concept album is a continuation of the story begun on their '88 Operation: Mindcrime album. I can just imagine what the music critics were like when they first heard about this album: a concept album from a Progressive Metal band? They must've went completely apoplectic.
