6075. Santana - Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation

Image
From: Caravanserai ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz Fusion Such a neat atmospheric intro/prelude instrumental that starts off this quite unique album from Santana. I really like the way the instruments work together in a very beautiful manner with none of them taking to outshine another; each is an integral piece keeping that ethereal groove going.   Hear Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Weather Report - River People   My song pick 2 years ago today: Audioslave - Until We Fall   My song pick 3 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Power of the Laser Dragon Fire   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ian Anderson - Cold Dead Reckoning (2044)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Molly Hatchet - Good Rockin' My song pick 6 years ago today: Carmen - Bullfight My song pick 7 years ago today: The Outfield - Say It Isn't So My song pick 8 years ago today: Quarterflash - Take Me To Heart My song pick 9 years ago today:...

6074. Blue Öyster Cult - Live For Me

Image
From: Heaven Forbid ; Year: 1998; Genre: Hard Rock I have always loved Heaven Forbid ever since I heard the singles come on the radio and I immediately pushed record on my cassette tape. Once I was able to hear the rest of it I was hooked; great unappreciated album from an important, storied band. Anyway, this track is one of those that would fit right in with the biggest hits of the '70s/'80s is arrangement, writing, and production. I absolutely love the musical atmosphere they inject into a tragic tale; Buck Dharma really killed it on this one vocally.   Hear Live For Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: 10,000 Maniacs - Trouble Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: Roxette - It Must Have Been Love   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dream Theater - The Best of Times   My song pick 4 years ago today: Seals & Crofts - We May Never Pass This Way (Again)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Arnold Layne My song pick 6...

6073. R.E.M. - Drive

Image
From: Automatic for the People ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock Last night while trying to sleep this song kept playing in my mind, thus keeping me awake. So, I of course looked it up, which seemed to make it subside for the night. Anyway, this is one of those song that I have a lot of memories tied to, being that it was part of a formative era for me personally. I have always love how R.E.M. just kinda just did what they wanted and just so happened to tap into a huge part of the listening public. Drive is one of their tracks that really exemplifies this mode of thought in a way as a call to action to take your life into your own hands and live you life the way you really would want to.    Hear Drive on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Spacehog - Carry On   My song pick 2 years ago today: Robin Trower - Bluebird   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pleasure - Glide   My song pick 4 years ago today: Wings - Venus and Mars   M...

6072. Nick Gilder - 21st Century

Image
From: City Nights ; Year: 1978; Genre: Glam Rock I remember this record in particular when young, Nick Gilder's music got a lot of airplay throughout that time if memory serves. Whilst also known for his work as frontman for the glam rock act Sweeny Todd, he made a bigger splash as a solo artist and songwriter for many others who would make huge hits out of them.   Hear 21st Century on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Brenton Wood - The Oggum Boogum Song   My song pick 2 years ago today: George Clinton - Do Fries Go With That Shake?   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jefferson Starship - Alien   My song pick 4 years ago today: Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get It Right   My song pick 5 years ago today: Ten Years After - Over the Hill My song pick 6 years ago today: The Who - Sister Disco My song pick 7 years ago today: Pallas - Shock Treatment My song pick 8 years ago today: Marillion - Hooks in You My song pick 9 years ago to...

6071. Rick Derringer - Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo

Image
From: All American Boy ; Year: 1973; Genre: Hard Rock Had this one on my mind last night and this morning; it's one of those timeless hard rock songs that just seems to please the majority of those who hear it. It is quite interesting when you see all whom Rick Derringer has worked and recorded with; that list is extensive and very broad. Everyone from the brothers Winter, Kiss, Alice Cooper, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Steely Dan just to name a handful; suffice it to say he is one of those artists you have heard at some point. Anyway, this classic song was one he apparently wrote towards the end of his band the McCoys , who actually went on with him to record with Johnny Winter as the backing band; they were relegated to the "And" in the band's title due to the fact that they were considered bubblegum pop. Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo was one from Derringer's pen that appeared on that record, and is a little slower with a very notable bluesy sound. Rick Derrin...

6070. Earth, Wind & Fire - Rock That!

Image
From: I Am ; Year: 1979; Genre: Funk/Soul/Disco  Have I ever mentioned that I love Earth, Wind & Fire? Quite a lot I do believe, quite a lot. What a better band to get your blood pulsating and your hips a movin' on this Friday? This instrumental needs to be at least three times longer; you need a DJ with two copies getting one started as the other fades out to keep the dance floor thumpin'.   Hear Rock That! on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: UB40 - Red Red Wine   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - Do Your Thing   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steve Miller Band - Fandango   My song pick 4 years ago today: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) - Born on the Bayou   My song pick 5 years ago today: April Wine - Caught in the Crossfire My song pick 6 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Ears of Tin My song pick 7 years ago today: Melvins - With Teeth My song pick 8 years ago today: Queen - Fat ...

6069. 3 Doors Down - Loser

Image
From: The Better Life ; Year: 2000; Genre: Alternative Rock Whilst deciding on the song I was choosing today I happened to notice that I have only picked one from 3 Door Down, and it has been quite a while. This track was apparently the second single off of their first studio album and did quite well.    Hear Loser on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rare Earth - Midnight Lady   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Ventures - Journey to the Stars   My song pick 3 years ago today: Missing Link - Sorcery   My song pick 4 years ago today: Boston - Party   My song pick 5 years ago today: Azteca - Non Pacem My song pick 6 years ago today: The Zombies - Beechwood Park My song pick 7 years ago today: Three Dog Night - The Loner My song pick 8 years ago today: Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Babies My song pick 9 years ago today: Live - Lightning Crashes My song pick 10 years ago today: Duran Duran - The Reflex My song pick 11 years a...

6068. Camel - Flight of the Snow Goose

Image
From: Music Inspired by The Snow Goose ; Year: 1975; Genre: Progressive Rock Getting to pick another song from a band I have been lately meaning to pick. This is a neat instrumental track that features a good blend of synth and regular rock sounds. From wot I understand, this record kind of went through a few concepts and eventually settled on it being based on the novella of the same name written by Paul Gallico . Originally the music on the record was supposed to contain lyrics from the story, however, the author did not take kindly to it and they settled on instrumentals instead. What is rather neat is how this one is broken up into more "bite sized" tracks with most being under three minutes in length, which contrasts with most prog rock of the time. I suppose it is a matter of opinion because the songs could just as easily be grouped together in a sub-pieces or such.   Hear Flight of the Snow Goose on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Ramblers...

6067. Harlequin - I Did it for Love

Image
From: One False Move ; Year: 1982; Genre: Rock/New Wave One of the songs I've been meaning to pick recently, and am now finally getting around to it; good things come to those who wait I suppose. This one, which is the lead single of the record, has all that great early '80s rock sound that just kicks some serious keister and then some.    Hear I Did it for Love on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Primus - Erin on the Side of Caution   My song pick 2 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Florida Man   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Moody Blues - Voices in the Sky   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Kinks - Lola   My song pick 5 years ago today: Fleet Foxes - Grown Ocean My song pick 6 years ago today: Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady) My song pick 7 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Only Solitaire My song pick 8 years ago today: Modest Petrovitch Mussorgsky - Intermezzo Symphonique in Modo Classico My song pick 9 y...

6066. Midnight Oil - At the Time of Writing

Image
From: Resist ; Year: 2022; Genre: Alternative Rock Needed something from my favourite band out of OZ today: Midnight Oil. Figured I'd go ahead and choose another one from their most recent studio album, which definitely shows that none of the band members have not lost much if anything; very solid and immediately recognizable with that sound I've come to love over the years.   Hear At the Time of Writing on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Ginnungagap   My song pick 2 years ago today: Meat Loaf - I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bernard Wright - Firebolt Hustle   My song pick 4 years ago today: Asia - Eye to Eye   My song pick 5 years ago today: Grand Funk Railroad - We're An American Band My song pick 6 years ago today: Argent - It's Only Money (Parts 1 + 2) My song pick 7 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Woncha Take Me for a While My song pick 8 years ago...

6065. Wishbone Ash - Living Proof

Image
From: Just Testing ; Year: 1980; Genre: Hard Rock Music from quite a few bands today; just happened to settle on the lead track from Wishbone Ash's Just Testing record. An excellent heavy rocker with an awesome beat and, as always with the band, some great musicianship across the board.   Hear Living Proof on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Crosby, Stills & Nash - Guinnevere   My song pick 2 years ago today: Yellow No 5 - Everything Cherries   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pallas - Blood and Roses   My song pick 4 years ago today: Faith No More - Zombie Eaters   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby My song pick 6 years ago today: The Who - The Song Is Over My song pick 7 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Questlords of Inverness, Ride to the Galactic Fortress! 6064. Maria Muldaur - Midnight at the Oasis

Image
From: Maria Muldaur ; Year: 1973; Genre: Soft Rock It is another one of those times where I had a song that I had not heard or thought about in many, many years just pop into my mind. Quite a sensual song, which is probably some of the appeal, along with Maria Muldaur's voice and the jazzy music. It was a pretty big song throughout the '70s and I personally heard it a lot in the 1980s and into the 1990s, but sadly, I really would have to look for it today; not in a lot of media as of today. It's one of those perfect tracks to sit back and relax to.   Hear Midnight at the Oasis on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Parliament - Prelude/Gamin' On Ya   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ram Jam - Black Betty   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jigsaw - Wildfire   My song pick 4 years ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)   My song pick 5 years ago today: IQ - Awake and Nervous My song pick 6 years ago today: Nirvana...

6063. James Brown - Lowdown Popcorn

Image
From: Sex Machine ; Year: 1970; Genre: Soul/Funk Don't know why, but just felt like picking something from "The Godfather of Soul," James Brown. Funny enough, apparently Lowdown Popcorn is the only studio recording on this live double album; they just added reverb, echoes, and crowd noise to make it fit in with the rest of the material on it. A very cool funk track with a lot of soul thrown in, obviously.   Hear Lowdown Popcorn on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Joan Baez - Rejoice in the Sun   My song pick 2 years ago today: Uriah Heep - Hold Your Head Up   My song pick 3 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Rain When I Die   My song pick 4 years ago today: Return to Forever - Spain   My song pick 5 years ago today: Asia - The Last to Know My song pick 6 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Childhood's End My song pick 7 years ago today: Queensrÿche - Take Hold of the Flame My song pick 8 years ago today: Glenn Frey - Smuggler's Bl...

6062. Led Zeppelin - Carouselambra

Image
From: In Through the Out Door ; Year: 1979; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock This track really reminds me a lot of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's mid 1970s music with all the heavy use of keyboards played by John Paul Jones as well as Jimmy Page's use of the " Gizmotron ." This entire record has always been one of the band's most experimental, and this song in particular exemplifies that experimentation.   Hear Carouselambra on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dave Loggins - Please Come to Boston   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bon Jovi - All I Want Is Everything   My song pick 3 years ago today: Megadeth - Death From Within   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steven Wilson - Perfect Life   My song pick 5 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - This Ain't the Summer of Love My song pick 6 years ago today: Dick Dale - Shredded Heat My song pick 7 years ago today: The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society My song pick 8 year...

6061. Iron Maiden - The Clairvoyant

Image
From: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son ; Year: 1988; Genre: Heavy Metal I've always loved how not only Iron Maiden rock so hard and sound like no other band, but how they always seem to tell such epic and detailed stories throughout a piece of music no longer five or six minutes much of the time.   Hear The Clairvoyant on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Butterfly Garden   My song pick 2 years ago today: Billy Joel - Leningrad   My song pick 3 years ago today: Hot Butter - Popcorn   My song pick 4 years ago today: Parliament - Agony of Defeet   My song pick 5 years ago today: Dream Theater - Untethered Angel My song pick 6 years ago today: Oasis - Supersonic My song pick 7 years ago today: U2 - A Sort of Homecoming My song pick 8 years ago today: A-ha - The Sun Always Shines on T.V. 6060. The Temptations - I Truly, Truly Believe

Image
From: The Temptations Wish it Would Rain ; Year: 1968; Genre: Soul/R&B/Motown This is a rather cool song in which bass singer Melvin Franklin got to come to the front and provide the lead vocals. It is pure awesomeness hearing that big, deep, booming voice being backed by his band mates and by the legendary Funk Brothers.   Hear I Truly, Truly Believe on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Neil Diamond - Dry Your Eyes   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Zealot Gene   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dick Dale and his Del-Tones - Mr. Eliminator   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jane's Addiction - Just Because   My song pick 5 years ago today: Journey - Remember Me My song pick 6 years ago today: The Cranberries - Linger My song pick 7 years ago today: Sammy Hagar - There's Only One Way to Rock My song pick 8 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Forgotten Years My song pick 9 years ago today: The Nashville Allstars...

6059. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Abraham, Martin & John

Image
From: Time Out for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles ; Year: 1969; Genre: Soul/Motown Martin Luther King Junior Day again; I thought this cover by the one and only Smokey Robinson and the Miracles of the memorable hit by Dion . It seem to me personally at least to always come to mind this time each year for obvious reasons.   Hear Abraham, Martin & John on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Hold Back the Water   My song pick 2 years ago today: Golden Earring - Long Blond Animal   My song pick 3 years ago today: Lakeside - Strung Out   My song pick 4 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Long-a-Growing   My song pick 5 years ago today: Neil Young - Old Man My song pick 6 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - Ma-Ma-Ma Belle My song pick 7 years ago today: Bon Jovi - Hey God My song pick 8 years ago today: Parliament - Let's Play House My song pick 9 years ago today: Rare Earth - Warm ...

6058. The Marvelettes - The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game

Image
From: The Marvelettes (The Pink Album) ; Year: 1967; Genre: Soul/Pop/Motown Had a couple of other songs in mind to potentially choose for today, but had some from The Marvelettes on my mind, so I am going with one. As if I need a reason to pick a song from one of the many fantastic groups out of the Motown hit machine.    Hear The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Cult - Spiritwalker   My song pick 2 years ago today: Boyz II Men - Motownphilly   My song pick 3 years ago today: Yes - Then   My song pick 4 years ago today: Brave Belt - Goodbye, Soul Shy   My song pick 5 years ago today: Klaatu - Little Neutrino My song pick 6 years ago today: Pallas - Win or Lose My song pick 7 years ago today: AC/DC - Rock 'N' Roll Damnation My song pick 8 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out My song pick 9 years ago today: Dream Theater - The Ministry of Lost Souls My song pi...

6057. R.E.M. - Losing My Religion

Image
From: Out of Time ; Year: 1991; Genre: Alternative Rock R.E.M. is another excellent band that for one reason or another has not gotten enough attention on my blog; Losing My Religion in particular is one I'm honestly surprised I have not chosen yet. It is one of those tracks that has never faded out of airplay and/or popular culture; it's just got a timeless sound and an extremely wide appeal.   Hear Losing My Religion on YouTube.         My song pick 1 year ago today: Midnight Express - Danger Zone   My song pick 2 years ago today: The Ronettes - I Can Hear Music   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Allman Brothers Band - Wasted Words   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - The Main Monkey Business   My song pick 5 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - For Your Love My song pick 6 years ago today: The Offspring - A Million Miles Away My song pick 7 years ago today: Imagination - Flashback My song pick 8 years ago today: Blue Cheer - Ju...
