From: Fairport Convention; Year: 1968; Genre: Folk Rock
This is one of those cases where the cover of a popular song came out prior to the original, although it was not the first cover of the song. About a month or two before Fairport's version Judy Collins released her version of it, however, Fairport's version treats the song with much more of the heavier rock side of folk rock than either Collins' or Joni Mitchell's.
Chelsea Morning is one of many that Joni Mitchell wrote with existential imagery; this time her subject matter was about living in her apartment in Chelsea, New York. Both Judy Byble and Iain Matthews share lead vocals for their version of the song with Judy Byble taking the verses and Iain Matthews taking the chorus.
The debut album would be the only time Judy Byble would appear with the band being replaced by Sandy Denny on later album also Iain Matthews would leave the band a little later as well in the metamorphic lineup of the band.
