5829. Jerry Reed - Sixteen Tons

From: Hot A' Mighty!; Year: 1973; Genre: Rock/Funk/Country
Been on a Jerry Reed kick lately; listening to a lot of his music, especially his non-traditional arrangements of the classics. Sixteen Tons, of course, has been covered and recorded more times than I dare to count with Tennessee Ernie Ford's version being the most famous. Originally written by Merle Travis, it was apparently inspired by writings by his brother and other sayings among coal miners. What I like most about Jerry Reed's rendition is how he blends so many styles to move the classic song forward into something quite different but still has the soul of the older arrangements.
