Just felt like putting on some Dream Theater this morning. For some reason these two rather long tracks, which both open and close their '07 Systematic Chaos album, just seemed perfect for my pick today. This is a truly an awesome piece of music in so many ways; it's slowly becoming one of my favourite songs from Dream Theater.
Part I is broken up into two sections: "Prelude" and "Resurrection." Part II is broken up further into 4 parts: "Heretic," "The Slaughter of the Damned," "The Reckoning," and "Salvation."

This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style. Had a couple of other songs in mind for this minor holiday, (that is, if you can call it an actual holiday), but had this one just pop into my head while I was getting ready to pick.
