6223. The Trammps - Zing! Went the Strings of my Heart

Image
From: The Legendary ZING Album ; Year: 1975 (1972); Genre: Soul The first time I played this record it became a favourite for two reasons: 1. The music and vocals, and 2. Just how aspirational the album's title is. I mean, really, with that kind of a title it better be "legendary," which it is in my opinion. Interestingly enough, they updated this song from decades past, (1935 to be exact), and made it sound like it was brand new. Far and gone my absolute favourite aspect of the track is Earl Young's magnificent bass lead vocals, which he shared for a great dynamic.   Hear Zing! 6222. Bay City Rollers - Rock n' Roll Love Letter

Image
From: Rock n' Roll Love Letter ; Year: 1976; Genre: Rock/Pop Just have this Scots Pop/Rock band's music on my mind today, and thus I am choosing another one of their songs. It was one of two singles and the title-track to boot; has a load of that fun '70s pop sound in spades.   Hear Rock n' Roll Love Letter on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Stevie Wonder - I Just Called To Say I Love You   My song pick 2 years ago today: Anita Ward - Ring My Bell   My song pick 3 years ago today: Tears for Fears - Elemental   My song pick 4 years ago today: ABBA - On And On And On   My song pick 5 years ago today: Rainbow - Stargazer My song pick 6 years ago today: Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy My song pick 7 years ago today: The Winery Dogs - Oblivion My song pick 8 years ago today: Lipps Inc - Funkytown My song pick 9 years ago today: Johann Sebastian Bach - BWV 1080 - Art of Fugue My song pick 10 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Killing in t

6221. Johnny Rivers - Seventh Son

Image
From: Meanwhile Back At The Whisky à Go Go ; Year: 1965; Genre: Rock 'n Roll Some artists seemed to save their best for live shows, Johnny Rivers is one of them. This rendition, originally written by Willie Dixon and recorded Willie Mabon about a decade prior became one of Rivers' best known in his repertoire. He did a great job making a track that you can appreciate with headphones on or on the dance floor.   Hear Seventh Son on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rare Earth - Satisfaction Guaranteed   My song pick 2 years ago today: Meat Loaf - You Took the Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Saturday Night)   My song pick 3 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Cam Ye O'er Frae France   My song pick 4 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Road To...   My song pick 5 years ago today: Lacy J. 6220. Joe Cocker - Something

Image
From: Joe Cocker! ; Year: 1969; Genre: Soul/Gospel/Rock It is quite interesting how I have yet to find a version of this song that I do not like, I'm sure one exists, but I have not run into it yet. I really love the gospel and soul that Joe Cocker bestowed on this one; he sure did a lot of their songs, which is a testament to how the artists "gelled" and the writing prowess of The Beatles' members.   Hear Something on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Johnny Rodriguez - Erez tú   My song pick 2 years ago today: Stanley Clarke - More Hot Fun   My song pick 3 years ago today: Cheap Trick - Ain't That a Shame   My song pick 4 years ago today: Marcus Miller - Superspy   My song pick 5 years ago today: Seals & Crofts - Diamond Girl My song pick 6 years ago today: Rick James - Call Me Up My song pick 7 years ago today: Chris Squire - Hold Out Your Hand My song pick 8 years ago today: Al Green - Back Up Train My song pick 9 years ago today: Ka

6219. The Rhythm Machine - Freakish Love

Image
From: Whatcha Gonna Do/Freakish Love (single) ; Year: 1975; Genre: Soul/Funk As far as I am aware this track only has appeared as the b-side to this single release, but without a doubt it is a hidden treasure and perfect for this Friday.    Hear Freakish Love on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: War - Don't Let No One Get You Down   My song pick 2 years ago today: Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues   My song pick 3 years ago today: Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Coming Home)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Pallas - The Alien Messiah   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Beach Boys - Your Summer Dream My song pick 6 years ago today: Blue Cheer - Rock Me Baby My song pick 7 years ago today: The Byrds - So You Want to be a Rock 'n' Roll Star My song pick 8 years ago today: The Chi-Lites - Stoned Out of My Mind My song pick 9 years ago today: Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence My song pick 10 years ago today: Yes - Madrigal My song pick 11 years ago tod

6218. Dave Edmunds and the Stray Cats - The Race Is On

Image
From: Twangin... ; Year: 1981; Genre: Rockabilly/Country/Rock 'n Roll Here's a rockabilly cover of the country song originally from George Jones , which Dave Edmunds being backed by the Stray Cats performed an exemplary version in their own great style.   Hear The Race Is On on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - Don't Answer Me   My song pick 2 years ago today: John Denver - Four Strong Winds   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rush - BU2B2   My song pick 4 years ago today: Jigsaw - Keeping My Head Above Water   My song pick 5 years ago today: ABBA - Andante, Andante My song pick 6 years ago today: The Who - Join Together My song pick 7 years ago today: The Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra My song pick 8 years ago today: Blood, Sweat & Tears - And When I Die My song pick 9 years ago today: Styx - Mademoiselle My song pick 10 years ago today: David Shire - Night on Disco Mountain My song pick 11 years ago today: King Crim

6217. The (Young) Rascals - In the Midnight Hour

Image
From: The Young Rascals ; Year: 1966; Genre: Rock/Soul/R&B Had the debut album from The Young Rascals on my mind yesterday and took it as a sign I should choose one from it. This is, as you probably guessed it, a cover of the hit song from the immortal Wilson Pickett, but they really extended it and slowed the overall tempo and groove down and added some to it, which gave it some distinctiveness. Although, they did keep Steve Cropper's iconic riff intact, which really is the signature of the song.   Hear In the Midnight Hour on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rush - Peaceable Kingdom   My song pick 2 years ago today: Blue Öyster Cult - Screams   My song pick 3 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Dam That River   My song pick 4 years ago today: Funkadelic - Good Old Music   My song pick 5 years ago today: Vixen - Tangerine My song pick 6 years ago today: 3 Inches of Blood - 4000 Torches My song pick 7 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Rover My song pick 8 years

6216. Saigon Kick - World Goes Round

Image
From: The Lizard ; Year: 1992; Genre: Rock/Alternative Rock Truthfully I have never been heavy into Saigon Kick except for their song Chanel , which is a novelty track from the end of this album, and a total blast to play along with. Other than their hit Love is on the Way , that was played ad nauseam on the radio, I mostly heard the band through different people who owned the CD, and most of them liked the deeper cuts anyway, which is where I learned of the song Chanel . However, I would have to say that there is a lot of great material to be found on the album, this being one of the tracks in my opinion.   Hear World Goes Round on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Cyndi Lauper - When You Were Mine   My song pick 2 years ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Welcome Back   My song pick 3 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Water   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Foxy Lady   My song pick 5 years ago today: Rammste

6215. Los Lobos - Don't Worry Baby

From: How Will the Wolf Survive? ; Year: 1984; Genre: Blues Rock Here is a great piece of bluesy rock/rockabilly to start the workweek from Los Lobos.   Hear Don't Worry Baby on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Lou Rawls - Three O'Clock in the Morning   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - First Ya Gotta Shake The Gate   My song pick 3 years ago today: Curved Air - Easy   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Temptations - (I Know) I'm Losing You   My song pick 5 years ago today: Neil Young - Heart of Gold My song pick 6 years ago today: April Wine - 21st Century Schizoid Man My song pick 7 years ago today: Mr. Big - The Monster in Me My song pick 8 years ago today: Jaco Pastorius - Liberty City My song pick 9 years ago today: Primus - The Air is Getting Slippery My song pick 10 years ago today: Soundgarden - Halfway There My song pick 11 years ago today: Jim Croce - Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels) My song pick 12 years ago to

6214. Uriah Heep - Rocks in the Road

Image
From: Living the Dream ; Year: 2018; Genre: Hard Rock/Progressive Rock Was enjoying some music from this newer Uriah Heep album recently and thought I'd pick yet another one from it. This track in particular reminds me a lot of classic Deep Purple, mostly due to the organ, the driving bass and drums, especially that organ played so well by Phil Lanzon.   Hear Rocks in the Road on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Blowflys - Funky In The Hole   My song pick 2 years ago today: Kansas - Mysteries and Mayhem   My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Out of the Noise   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ultravox - Man of Two Worlds   My song pick 5 years ago today: Steppenwolf - Rock Me My song pick 6 years ago today: ABBA - One of Us My song pick 7 years ago today: Rick James - Below the Funk (Pass the J) My song pick 8 years ago today: Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe My song pick 9 years ago today: Pallas - Just a Memory My song pick 10 years ago

6213. Gloryhammer - Vorpal Laserblaster Of Pittenweem

Image
From: Return to the Kingdom of Fife ; Year: 2023; Genre: Power Metal Loving this new album from Gloryhammer; got all of that over-the-top drama and story telling that I have come to enjoy. I would really love to see some of their records performed as full-on operas with all of the dressing and pomp. That is essentially what they are, heck, if it was back in the Classical or Romance period this would be opera in all its grandeur.     Hear Vorpal Laserblaster Of Pittenweem on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Megadeth - United Abominations   My song pick 2 years ago today: Sly & The Family Stone - I'll Never Fall In Love Again   My song pick 3 years ago today: Hawkwind - The Forge of Vulcan   My song pick 4 years ago today: Asia - Ride Easy   My song pick 5 years ago today: Three Dog Night - It's a Jungle Out There My song pick 6 years ago today: Larry Graham & Graham Central Station - Last Train My song pick 7 years ago today: Boston - Don't Be Afr

6212. Lou Rawls - I'm Satisfied

Image
From: You're Good For Me ; Year: 1968; Genre: Soul/Funk I don't see how I could go wrong with something with the legendary voice of Lou Rawls on this busy Friday; definitely helps getting through the day and then some.    Hear a live performance of I'm Satisfied along with Down Here On The Ground on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blondie - Maria   My song pick 2 years ago today: Crash Test Dummies (feat. 6211. R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts

Image
From: Automatic for the People ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock Gosh, this one really rattles some memories loose for me, not only was it from my pivotal early teenage years, but it was also quite the piece of music and quite popular; rightly so. They might've been one of the preeminent alternative rock bands, but their influences really came through on this one. With that doo-wop rhythm mixed with rock and gospel made for a very distinctive and timeless sound that still is fresh today in my opinion.   Hear Everybody Hurts on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Jethro Tull - Wolf Unchained   My song pick 2 years ago today: Hawkwind - We Like To Be Frightened   My song pick 3 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Maggie's Farm   My song pick 4 years ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Infinite Space (Conclusion)   My song pick 5 years ago today: Hall & Oates - Out of Touch My song pick 6 years ago today: Fleetwood Mac - Station Man My song pic

6210. The Allman Brothers Band - Jelly Jelly

Image
From: Brothers and Sisters ; Year: 1973; Genre: Blues Rock It has been so long ago that I cannot remember 100%, but I believe that Brothers and Sisters was my first album I bought from The Allman Brothers Band; I am not sure if I already had Enlightened Rogues or one of their live albums prior. Suffice it to say it was not the last album from this band that I purchased. Anyway, for me personally this was one of those records where I usually just let it play; it is that good, nothing weak about it. Let alone the fact that you can still hear the majority of the tracks being played on the radio, which are mostly famous classic hits, the other songs just slide in right next them without notice. It is really interesting when you look at the turmoil in this historic band at the time in how they stayed together despite the tragic deaths of two integral members combined with the evident tensions and substance abuse to make these pieces of music history.   Hear Jelly Jelly on YouTube.

6209. Asia - Bury Me In Willow

Image
From: XXX ; Year: 2012; Genre: Progressive Rock Kind of immersing myself audibly in this record as of late; kind of a melancholy flavour with it being the final album with the classic lineup after Steve Howe left the band. Although, the magic of those early days are still present especially in the overall feel and sound, but with the almost thirty years after their last with this lineup the musicianship had evolved and thus gotten a great deal better.   Hear Bury Me In Willow on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Cher - Half-Breed   My song pick 2 years ago today: Robert Knight - Everlasting Love   My song pick 3 years ago today: Parliament - What Comes Funky   My song pick 4 years ago today: Alice in Chains - Grind   My song pick 5 years ago today: Gloryhammer - The Fires of Ancient Cosmic Destiny My song pick 6 years ago today: Dave Edmunds - Girls Talk My song pick 7 years ago today: Sky - Where Opposites Meet My song pick 8 years ago today: Jigsaw - Cry ('Til

6208. Blue Öyster Cult - So Supernatural

Image
From: Ghost Stories ; Year: 2024; Genre: Hard Rock Here is one off of BÖC's new record, Ghost Stories ; it is always great to have some new excellent music, especially from this legendary act. I love how they still have "that sound" that we all love, but have continued to evolve their music as well. The vocals in particular are top-notch; both Bloom and "Buck Dharma" have kept their pipes in great working order.   Hear So Supernatural on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Zombies - Tell Her No   My song pick 2 years ago today: Van McCoy & the Soul City Symphony - The Hustle   My song pick 3 years ago today: The Kinks - A Long Way From Home   My song pick 4 years ago today: Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill   My song pick 5 years ago today: Megadeth - Peace Sells My song pick 6 years ago today: Dr. Hook - Sharing the Night Together My song pick 7 years ago today: Hawkwind - Kerb Crawler My song pick 8 years ago today: Funkadelic - Freak of

6207. Earth, Wind & Fire - That's the Way of the World

Image
From: That's the Way of the World ; Year: 1975; Genre: Soul/R&B If it is not already against the law to not crank up Earth, Wind & Fire when they come on, it should be. Having the world around you drowned out whilst being immersed in the aural splendour that is their one-of-a-kind music is bliss incarnate.   Hear That's the Way of the World on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: James Brown & The Famous Flames - Cold Sweat   My song pick 2 years ago today: Tom Cochrane & Red Rider - Big League   My song pick 3 years ago today: XTC - King For A Day   My song pick 4 years ago today: Wolfmother - White Unicorn   My song pick 5 years ago today: Billy Joel - Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) My song pick 6 years ago today: Wild Turkey - A Universal Man My song pick 7 years ago today: War - The World is a Ghetto My song pick 8 years ago today: Megadeth - The Scorpion My song pick 9 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Power and the Passion My song

6206. Jethro Tull - Roots to Branches

Image
From: Roots to Branches ; Year: 1995; Genre: Progressive Rock/Hard Rock Had this one pop into my head whilst mulling heavier subject in my mind. It was another surprise to me that I noticed that I had not chosen this song yet; need to remedy that. Whilst I never really came to like this record, as the years have gone by and my maturity and wisdom, (hopefully), increasing, I've come to understand wot it was written about and also been able to enjoy the music that much more due to this fact.    Hear Roots to Branches on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Queen - The Prophet's Song   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bee Gees - To Love Somebody   My song pick 3 years ago today: Marillion - Warm Wet Circles   My song pick 4 years ago today: Dire Straits - Tunnel of Love   My song pick 5 years ago today: Banchee - 3/4 Song My song pick 6 years ago today: Parliament - Gettin' to Know You My song pick 7 years ago today: Silver - Wham Bam My song pick 8 years ago

6205. The Jimmy Castor Bunch - My Brightest Day

Image
From: It's Just Begun ; Year: 1972; Genre: Jazz Fusion/Funk/Classical If I did not know who was playing this song I would swear it was someone like Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, or Lighthouse, but it is, in fact, The Jimmy Castor Bunch. I just love how seamlessly they transition between genres and styles; extremely masterful across the board.   Hear My Brightest Day on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rush - Garden Road   My song pick 2 years ago today: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - May I Have a Talk With You   My song pick 3 years ago today: ZZ Top - Legs   My song pick 4 years ago today: Primus - Eclectic Electric   My song pick 5 years ago today: Parliament - Trombipulation My song pick 6 years ago today: The Alan Parsons Project - Silence and I My song pick 7 years ago today: Wall of Voodoo - Ring of Fire My song pick 8 years ago today: John Dowland - Time Stands Still My song pick 9 years ago today: Tarot - Magic and Technology My song p

6204. Bob Welch - Sentimental Lady

Image
From: French Kiss ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock/Pop Happened to be thinking about how it has been almost exactly some 12 years since Bob Welch's passing and I figured it'd be a great time to pick another of his songs. Whilst it was originally recorded about five years prior on Fleetwood Mac's Bare Trees album at the time he had one of the lead roles with the band, it only got its big success on his first solo record following the demise of his band Paris. Interestingly enough, most of Fleetwood Mac at the time accompanied him on this re-recording with both Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham adding a lot to it both musically and lending their vocal talents.   Hear Sentimental Lady on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rare Earth - What'd I Say   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - In Brief Visitation   My song pick 3 years ago today: Geddy Lee - Slipping   My song pick 4 years ago today: The Sweet - Hell Raiser   My song pick 5 years ago today: ZZ

6203. Queen - Fight from the Inside

Image
From: News of the World ; Year: 1977; Genre: Hard Rock Was thinking about this record again a lot recently and came to the realization that it is quite a bit better, especially the deeper cuts, than most critique it. From wot I've read this track was almost entirely done by just Roger Taylor, who wrote, sung, and played most of the instruments on the studio recording; it is quite the hard-hitting rocker.   Hear Fight from the Inside on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Sage   My song pick 2 years ago today: Ratt - Round and Round   My song pick 3 years ago today: Little River Band - The Night Owls   My song pick 4 years ago today: Three Dog Night - Night in the City   My song pick 5 years ago today: The Guess Who - Key My song pick 6 years ago today: Tears for Fears - Broken My song pick 7 years ago today: The Hollywood Argyles - Alley Oop My song pick 8 years ago today: Sweeney Todd - Roxy Roller My song pick 9 years ago toda
